2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 3

Last update: Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014. Round 4 added.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft was based on the full, seven-round 2014 NFL Draft Order, which can be viewed by clicking the link.

*** THIS IS A LIVE 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT. PICKS ARE BEING POSTED NOW. TO SEE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, CHECK OUT THE ARCHIVED 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT SECTION. FOLLOW @walterfootball FOR UPDATES ***

  1. Houston Texans: Joel Bitonio, OT/G, Nevada
As mentioned earlier, teams that spend early picks on quarterbacks often double up on offense. If the Texans decide to do that, they could certainly upgrade the right tackle position, which is a big problem area for them.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Washington Redskins: Yawin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut
ESPN loves talking up London Fletcher by saying he’s still great, but he could barely move. He was one of the reasons the Redskins were so inept on defense. He has announced his retirement anyway.

Pick change; previously Shayne Skov, ILB

  3. Oakland Raiders: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
Both Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings are free agents. Even if Jennings returns, the Raiders will probably want to bring in another running back.

Pick change; previously David Yankey, G/OT

  4. Atlanta Falcons: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
The Falcons will give Steven Jackson one more chance, but that won’t preclude them from taking a running back in Rounds 3-4 if they can get good value. Obtaining Lache Seastrunk atop Round 3 definitely qualifies as good value.

Pick change; previously Odell Beckham, WR

  5. New York Jets: Michael Sam, DE/OLB, Missouri
The Jets have a great interior pass rush, but they need to become more potent on the outside.

Pick change; previously Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB

  6. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
Outside of finding a franchise quarterback, Jacksonville’s No. 1 priority has to be upgrading the pass rush. The Jaguars finished with the fewest sacks in 2013.

Pick change; previously Demarcus Lawrence, DE/OLB

  7. Cleveland Browns: Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State
Here’s some secondary help for the Browns, who could use someone to challenge Tashaun Gipson at safety.

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State
Toby Gerhart happens to be a free agent, so the Vikings could use a Round 3-4 selection on a new backup for Adrian Peterson.

Pick change; previously Anthony Johnson, DT

  9. Buffalo Bills: Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford
Kiko Alonso is a stud, but the Bills need someone else to play next to him, especially given that Arthur Moats is heading into free agency.

Pick change; previously Denzel Perryman, ILB

  10. New York Giants: Charles Sims, RB, West Virginia
The Giants are another team that will be hunting for a new running back. Andre Brown is a free agent, while David Wilson may not be ready for the 2014 season.

Pick change; previously Telvin Smith, OLB

  11. St. Louis Rams: Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
The Rams should think about drafting a quarterback on Day 2 just in case Sam Bradford continues to be mediocre (and injury-prone).

  12. Detroit Lions: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
The Lions have to consider a cornerback early in the 2014 NFL Draft if they don’t sign one in free agency. They’ve looked helpless against several of the better quarterbacks they faced this past year.

Bradley Roby is slotted pretty low in this mock because he played poorly this previous season. He’s also had some off-the-field issues. I think the Lions would take a chance on him though.

  13. San Francisco 49ers: Carl Bradford, DE/OLB, Arizona State
The 49ers may consider spending an early pick on a pass-rusher. Aldon Smith, who spent some time in rehab, has a pretty cloudy future with numerous off-the-field issues. San Francisco needs to protect itself in case Smith can’t stay out of trouble.

Pick change; previously Trevor Reilly, DE/OLB

  14. Dallas Cowboys: Telvin Smith, OLB, Florida State
When defenders like Ernie Sims and DeVonte Holloman are playing major snaps for the defense, something absolutely needs to be done.

Pick change; previously Ty Zimmerman, S

  15. Baltimore Ravens: Russell Bodine, C, North Carolina
Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and others are gone, but perhaps the player the Ravens miss most is Matt Birk. His replacements at center have been horrible. Almost anyone would be an upgrade.

  16. New York Jets: Victor Hampton, CB, South Carolina
It doesn’t appear as though Antonio Cromartie will be back with the Jets next year, so the team will have to address the cornerback position at some point.

Pick change; previously Victor Hampton, S

  17. Miami Dolphins: Devonta Freeman, RB, Florida State
The Dolphins don’t trust Lamar Miller at all, while Daniel Thomas isn’t very good. They’ll likely be searching for a new starting running back this spring.

Pick change; previously Carlos Hyde, RB

  18. Chicago Bears: De’Anthony Thomas, RB, Oregon
Matt Forte had 363 touches last year. The Bears may want to bring in another running back who can do similar things in the passing game just to give Forte a break.

Pick change; previously Chris Smith, DE

  19. Cleveland Browns: Khairi Fortt, ILB, California
The Browns have a great front seven, but the one liability in the group is Craig Robertson, who was abused in coverage this past season.

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Jimmy Graoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois
Carson Palmer played better late in the season, but he’s obviously not the long-term solution. Arizona can develop Stephen Morris for a couple of seasons.

Pick change; previously Stephen Morris, QB

  21. Green Bay Packers: Richard Rodgers, TE, California
With Jermichael Finley heading for free agency, Green Bay could grab a replacement at the tight end position.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Terrance Mitchell, CB, Oregon
Cary Williams hasn’t been very good and will probably be released next offseason (he’s due $6.5 million in 2015), while Bradley Fletcher can’t be counted on to start 16 games in a season.

Pick change; previously Morgan Breslin, DE/OLB

  23. Kansas City Chiefs: Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers
The Chiefs need another outside receiver to start across from Dwayne Bowe. This team had so many drops against the Broncos.

  24. Cincinnati Bengals: A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama
The Bengals may spend a mid-round pick on a quarterback to eventually challenge Andy Dalton if the former second-rounder can’t get over the first-round playoff hump.

Pick change; previously Victor Hampton, CB

  25. San Diego Chargers: Taylor Hart, DE/DT, Oregon
The Chargers have a solid starting front line on defense, but they don’t have much depth.

  26. Indianapolis Colts: Ed Stinson, DE/DT, Alabama
I mocked Datone Jones to the Colts for a while in the 2013 NFL Draft because they need a pass-rushing presence up front. That’s still a hole they have to fill, as we learned by watching Indianapolis fail to pressure Carson Palmer in November.

  27. New Orleans Saints: Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU
The Saints could use another receiver. Marques Colston disappointed this season prior to the Carolina victory, yet he’s still New Orleans’ top option by a wide margin.

  28. Carolina Panthers: Ty Zimmerman, S, Kansas State
Both Quintin Mikell and Michael Mitchell will be free agents in March. If the Panthers can’t retain both of them, they may search for a new safety in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Donte Moncrief, S

  29. New England Patriots: DaQuan Jones, NT, Penn State
Perhaps this is an overreaction pick, but Vince Wilfork will find it difficult to come back from a torn Achilles at his size and age.

  30. San Francisco 49ers: Dominique Easley, DE, Florida
The 49ers will need a successor for Justin Smith (Tank Carradine, maybe?) and also some depth on the defensive line. With four Day 2 selections, they can take a chance on someone like Dominique Easley, a tremendous talent who is coming off a terrible injury.

  31. Denver Broncos: Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss
Eric Decker, coming off a great season, is set to hit free agency (go here to check out my 2014 NFL Free Agent Rankings). He could be too rich for Denver’s blood considering all of the money the front office will have dedicated to Wes Welker, Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas.

Pick change; previously Jared Abbrederis, WR

  32. Minnesota Vikings: Aaron Colvin, CB, Oklahoma
Here’s more secondary help for the Vikings. A corner needs to be added with Chris Cook about to hit free agency.
