2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** THIS IS A LIVE 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT. PICKS ARE BEING POSTED NOW. TO SEE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, CHECK OUT THE ARCHIVED 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT SECTION. FOLLOW @walterfootball FOR UPDATES ***

  1. Houston Texans: Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB, BYU
The Texans would kill two stones with one bird with this pick, as Emmitt would say. They need to upgrade their pass rush and find some help at inside linebacker. Kyle Van Noy would satisfy the former, which would allow Brooks Reed to move inside.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Scott Crichton, DE/OLB

  2. Washington Redskins: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The Redskins need help all over their defensive, including up front. They had no push from their defensive line this past season.

  3. Cleveland Browns: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
The Browns apparently plan on courting Ben Tate in free agency, but what if he never hits the market or chooses to sign elsewhere?

Pick change; previously Christian Jones, ILB

  4. Oakland Raiders: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
Matt McGloin and Terrelle Pryor have both exceeded expectations and played well at times this year, but that can be attributed to offensive coordinator Greg Olson’s excellent coaching. Olson has gotten the most out of these two, as well as Josh Freeman and Chad Henne (Blaine Gabbert was a lost cause). Imagine what he’ll do with a legitimate franchise quarterback. I’m not sure Tajh Boyd qualifies as one, but Oakland needs to try something.

Pick change; previously Zack Martin, G

  5. Atlanta Falcons: Xavier Su’a-Filo, G, UCLA
The Falcons have some major issues on the offensive line. Everyone wants to look at left tackle, but the guard position is an area that must be upgraded as well.

Pick change; previously Gabe Jackson, G

  6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
The Buccaneers had some awful guard play this year. Part of the reason for this was Carl Nicks’ staph infection – prompting the Walking Bucs – and there’s been some speculation that he could be released this offseason.

Pick change; previously Anthony Johnson, DT

  7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Tre Mason, RB, Auburn
Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent (go here to check out my 2014 NFL Free Agent Rankings). He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

Pick change; previously Lache Seastrunk, RB

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Lamarcus Joyner, S, Florida State
The Vikings desperately need help in their secondary, including an upgrade next to Harrison Smith.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor
The Bills allowed the fourth-most sacks in the NFL this past season with 48. That obviously needs to change, and the front office can start by finding a replacement for Andy Levitre.

  10. Tennessee Titans: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
There have been reports indicating that Chris Johnson will be cut this offseason. If that’s the case, Tennessee will obviously be searching for a new lead running back.

  11. New York Giants: Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State
The Giants had several major issues this year. One big problem was their inability to get to the quarterback; only six teams had fewer sacks, and New York would’ve finished dead last in that department if it weren’t for Justin Tuck’s late surge. Tuck actually happens to be an impending free agent, so you can see how desperate the Giants will be to improve their pass rush.

Pick change; previously Marcus Roberson, CB

  12. St. Louis Rams: Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State
Kendall Langford has been a huge disappointment ever since signing a 4-year, $24 million contract in March 2012, as he’s offered very little pass-rushing ability. He almost certainly won’t make it into the 2015 season, as he’ll be due $6 million then. The Rams need an upgrade at defensive tackle.

Timmy Jernigan will definitely be moved up in next week’s mock following his performance in the national championship.

Pick change; previously Craig Loston, S

  13. Detroit Lions: Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
Dominic Raiola has seemingly been on Detroit’s roster forever, but he’ll be a 35-year-old free agent in March. The Lions will probably bring in a new center.

  14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
The Steelers will be searching for a new receiver. They need a new deep threat after Mike Wallace took the money and ran to Miami.

Pick change; previously Jason Verrett, CB

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
Pick a position, any position. The Cowboys need upgrades all over their defense. Jason Hatcher, an impending free agent, already has said that he’ll sign with the highest bidder.

Pick change; previously Davud Yankey, G/OT

  16. Baltimore Ravens: Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
Michael Oher has been a nice story, but his Baltimore chapter could be over soon. He’s a free agent come March – click here to check out my 2014 NFL Free Agent Rankings – and given his very inconsistent play, the Ravens could be looking in another direction to help their anemic offensive line.

Pick change; previously Allen Robinson, WR

  17. New York Jets: Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State
Geno Smith has looked like the worst quarterback in the NFL on many occasions this season – even worse than Brandon Weeden and Jeff Tuel – but it’s not like he has much of a chance with his horrific receiving corps. Santonio Holmes can’t stay healthy, while Stephen Hill is a bust.

  18. Miami Dolphins: Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Both Brent Grimes and Nolan Carroll will be hitting the free-agent market come March. The Dolphins will probably look to acquire another corner.

Pick change; previously Corey Robinson, OT

  19. Chicago Bears: Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
The Bears were able to re-sign Tim Jennings recently, but Charles Tillman’s contract is expiring soon.

Pick change; previously A.J. McCarron, QB

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB, Alabama
The Cardinals, who typically go with the top player on their board, will almost definitely be interested in someone like Adrian Hubbard, as they really need an upgrade at outside linebacker across from Sam Acho.

  21. Green Bay Packers: Craig Loston, S, LSU
Is there any doubt that the Packers need to improve their secondary? Their defensive backfield blew so many coverages throughout the season, and they had no chance against Colin Kaepernick.

Pick change; previously Trent Murphy, DE/OLB

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Dion Bailey, S, USC
Philadelphia’s defense is terrible for many reasons, one of which is the safety position. Nate Allen is garbage, while Patrick Chung can’t stay healthy.

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas
The Bengals drafted Margus Hunt, but they have Michael Johnson hitting free agency soon. With Carlos Dunlap extended, it’s very unlikely that Johnson will be retained.

  24. San Francisco 49ers: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers will need a new receiver to complement Michael Crabtree. Jordan Matthews is expected to fall on Draft Day because he’ll run a slow 40 at the Combine, but he’d be a steal here for San Francisco.

Pick change; previously Brandin Cooks, WR

  25. San Diego Chargers: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Chargers were so desperate for help at rush linebacker that they signed Dwight Freeney. The former Colt is obviously not a long-term solution for the team’s pass-rushing woes.

Pick change; previously Jeremiah Attaouchu, DE/OLB

  26. New Orleans Saints: Christian Jones, LB, Florida State
Here’s more help for the Saints’ linebacking corps. David Hawthorne has never lived up to expectations, so the front office may want to find someone who can challenge him.

Pick change; previously A.J. Johnson, ILB

  27. Indianapolis Colts: Yawin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut
The Colts need help all over their defense, including the linebacking corps, where the injury-prone Pat Angerer will be a free agent this March.

Pick change; previously Jordan Matthews, WR

  28. San Francisco 49ers: Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville
The 49ers spent a first-round pick on a safety last year, but they may have to use another selection on one with Donte Whitner heading into free agency.

Pick change; previously Dominique Easley, DE

  29. Carolina Panthers: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
Cam Newton has made huge improvements this year, but he could still really benefit from a potent, pass-catching weapon coming out of the backfield.

Pick change; previously Ka’Deem Carey, RB

  30. New England Patriots: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

  31. Denver Broncos: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
You have to wonder what the Broncos plan on doing at cornerback in 2014 and beyond. Champ Bailey and Quentin Jammer will be 36 and 35, respectively, in June. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, meanwhile, will be a free agent in March. Denver needs a long-term solution at the position.

Pick change; previously Kyle Fuller, CB

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado
Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin are both impending free agents, but the Seahawks can do better at receiver anyway.

Pick change; previously David Yankey, G/OT
