2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 3

Last update: Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2012. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
As written in my Kansas City Chiefs Team Needs page, “Javier Arenas has played well since Stanford Routt was unceremoniously released. He could stick as the starter across from Brandon Flowers, but the Chiefs will still need to find some depth.”

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
Eben Britton was benched this past season, and replacement Mike Brewster wasn’t much better. A mid-round pick should be used on interior line help.

Pick change; previously Eddie Lacy, RB

  3. Detroit Lions: Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
Both of Detroit’s starting outside linebackers are set to hit free agency. Help will obviously be needed if either Justin Durant or DeAndre Levy walk away.

Pick change; previously Desmond Trufant, CB

  4. Oakland Raiders: Kyle Long, OT, Oregon
The Raiders will need to upgrade their offensive line. Khalif Barnes cannot be a starter in this league. Kyle Long would appeal to Oakland fans for obvious reasons.

  5. Philadelphia Eagles: Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Connecticut
Brandon Boykin was a nice pick in the fourth round, but he won’t be enough if Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie leaves via free agency, as Philadelphia wants three high-level cornerbacks. Nnamdi Asomugha will be cut as soon as the season is over. He’s been absolutely terrible.

Pick change; previously Nickell Robey, CB

  6. Cleveland Browns: Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
The Browns have a new front office, so they’ll want to draft a quarterback in the middle rounds if Colt McCoy is traded.

  7. Arizona Cardinals: Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB, Auburn
Corey Lemonier, who provides great value here in Round 3, could bolster an inconsistent pass rush and displace the injury-prone O’Brien Schofield.

Pick change; previously Chase Thomas, DE/OLB

  8. Tennessee Titans: Travis Frederick, G/C, Wisconsin
Chris Johnson has finally regained CJ2K form in recent weeks, but that doesn’t mean the Titans can’t use an upgrade or two on the offensive line. Help is needed on the interior, and Travis Frederick can play multiple positions up front.

Pick change; previously John Simon, DE

  9. Buffalo Bills: Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State
The Bills spent tons of money on Mario Williams and Mark Anderson this offseason, but while the former has picked up his play lately, the latter has been dreadful whenever he’s been on the field. Buffalo needs to put as much pressure on the quarterback if it wants to unseat the Patriots in the division.

  10. New York Jets: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
New York desperately needs an upgrade at wideout for obvious reasons. Santonio Holmes is a bum, while Stephen Hill hasn’t really shown much yet.

Pick change; previously Brennan Williams, OT

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Brennan Williams, OT, North Carolina
The Buccaneers have had problems at right tackle for years. Demar Dotson took over for a terrible Jeremy Trueblood at the position this past season, but wasn’t very good. He’s entering his contract year, so Tampa Bay needs to bring in someone to challenge him.

Pick change; previously Khaseem Greene, LB

  12. San Francisco 49ers: Carrington Byndom, CB, Texas
Teams are always looking for cornerback depth, especially if they have extra picks. Besides, Carlos Rogers isn’t playing as well this season. He’s been solid at times, but has been inconsistent.

  13. New Orleans Saints: John Simon, DE, Ohio State
The Saints didn’t get much pressure on the quarterback. Cameron Jordan improved in this department over the second half of the season, but Will Smith looked like a shell of his former self. He’s due $10 million in 2013, so he obviously won’t be back.

Pick change; previously William Gholston, DE

  14. San Diego Chargers: Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee
Philip Rivers will be a free agent after the 2014 season. Will the Chargers re-sign him to a long-term deal if he continues to choke in the clutch and show signs of regression? They should probably bring in a young quarterback as insurance.

  15. Miami Dolphins: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
The Dolphins have two second-round picks because they dealt Vontae Davis to the Colts, so they should probably use one of them on a replacement.

  16. St. Louis Rams: Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma
The Rams should think about bringing in some competition for Brian Quick, who didn’t show very much promise in his rookie campaign.

Pick change; previously Ricky Wagner, OT

  17. Pittsburgh Steelers: Ryan Swope, WR, Texas A&M
The Steelers never shy away from a play-maker if one provides good value. The butterfingered Mike Wallace could be gone after this season.

  18. Dallas Cowboys: E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State
Tony Romo will turn 33 just prior to the 2013 NFL Draft. The Cowboys will have to think about bringing in a young quarterback.

Pick change; previously Zac Dysert, QB

  19. New York Giants: Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State
The Giants have issues in the middle of their defense. The safety position is a problem, as is inside linebacker. Chase Blackburn shouldn’t be starting, while Keith Rivers, a free agent in March, can never get healthy.

Pick change; previously Jordan Hill, DT

  20. Miami Dolphins: Gerald Hodges, LB, Penn State
Something the Dolphins must do this offseason is find some linebacker depth because they’re awfully thin there.

Pick change; previously Arthur Brown, OLB

  21. Minnesota Vikings: Alvin Bailey, G, Arkansas
The Vikings could stand to bolster in the interior of their offensive line, as neither Charlie Johnson nor Brandon Fusco played well at guard this year.

Pick change; previously Shayne Skov, ILB

  22. Baltimore Ravens: Tyrann Mathieu, CB, LSU
The Ravens suddenly have glaring issues at cornerback. Lardarius Webb tore an ACL for the second time in his career, while Cary Williams is a free agent.

It appears as though Tyrann Mathieu will enter the 2013 NFL Draft. The Ravens have taken a chance on another troubled cornerback.

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Kevin Reddick, ILB, North Carolina
The Bengals have major problems at linebacker. They lost Keith Rivers this past offseason, Manny Lawson will be a free agent in the spring, and Rey Maualuga is arguably one of the worst defensive starters in the NFL. I don’t know if he’s hurt or what, but he’s been awful this season.

  24. Washington Redskins: Bacarri Rambo, S, Georgia
More help for the Redskins’ secondary. Brandon Meriweather cannot be relied upon to stay healthy, and it’s not like he was a Pro Bowl talent anyway.

  25. Green Bay Packers: Jordan Reed, TE, Florida
Jermichael Finley will be due close to $8 million in 2013, and Packer fans should be happy about that because Finley is one of the most overrated players in the NFL. He’s terribly inconsistent and doesn’t appear as though he’ll ever live up to expectations.

Pick change; previously Dion Sims, TE

  26. Indianapolis Colts: Chase Thomas, DE/OLB, Stanford
Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis won’t be around much longer. The Colts need to find new players who can rush the passer.

Pick change; previously Brennan Williams, OT

  27. Seattle Seahawks: Ricky Wagner, OT, Wisconsin
Breno Giacomini was absolutely embarrassed in the season finale by Chris Long. Granted, Long has made so many right tackles look bad this year, but Giacomini has struggled in pass protection for most of the season.

Pick change; previously Jordan Reed, TE

  28. Houston Texans: Andre Ellington, RB, Clemson
This doesn’t fill any sort of current need, but Ben Tate will be a free agent after next season, so the Texans may want to trade him because they can’t exactly pay top dollar to two running backs.

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Zac Dysert, QB, Miami of Ohio
Alex Smith probably won’t be back with the 49ers next year, so Jim Harbaugh could use a mid-round pick on a young quarterback to groom behind Colin Kaepernick.

Pick change; previously E.J. Manuel, QB

  30. New England Patriots: William Gholston, DE/DT, Michigan State
Chandler Jones has had a monstrous rookie campaign thus far, but the Patriots need someone across from him to get to the quarterback, as Jermaine Cunningham has been a disappointment. Undrafted free agent Justin Francis broke out in the season finale, so perhaps he could be seen as the solution with more strong performances.

Pick change; previously Travis Frederick, G/C

  31. Atlanta Falcons: Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State
The overpaid Ray Edwards was recently cut. Meanwhile, John Abraham will turn 35 a week after the 2013 NFL Draft. Defensive end will be a priority early in the 2013 NFL Draft, and the Falcons may even double dip at the position in the first few rounds.

Pick change; previously Montee Ball, RB

  32. Denver Broncos: Robert Lester, S, Alabama
Denver’s young corners have played well alongside Champ Bailey, but safety help is needed because Michael Adams isn’t very good. He’s going to be a 32-year-old entering his contract season anyway.
