Back to Overreaction 2021 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 1-16
-
Tennessee Titans: Kwity Paye, 3-4OLB, Michigan
TRADE!! The Titans move up in a trade with the Raiders to land an edge rusher for Mike Vrabel’s defense. Paye has good versatility for Tennessee’s scheme.
Vic Beasley didn’t work out, and Jadeveon Clowney only signed a 1-year contract. Here’s a long-term edge rusher for Tennessee.
In 2020, Paye totaled 16 tackles and two sacks. The 6-foot-4, 277-pounder put together an impressive 2019 season as a well-balanced defender at the point of attack. The junior notched 50 tackles with 6.5 sacks on the year. With his developed strength, Paye can set the edge and hold his ground. He also shows some pass-rush ability and upside to be better as he gains experience. Paye was only a first-season starter in 2019, so he has room for improvement. -
Miami Dolphins: Zaven Collins, OLB, Tulsa
The Dolphins could use a linebacker upgrade and an edge rusher across from Emmanuel Ogbah. Collins would be a great scheme fit for Brian Flores.
Collins had a strong 2020 season, recording four sacks, four interceptions, two passes broken up, two forced fumbles and 54 tackles. He has made a lot of highlight-reel plays, such as a 95-yard pick-six in overtime to top Tulane. In 2019, he totaled 97 tackles with two sacks. He had 85 stops and 1.5 sacks in 2018.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Collins has a good skill set for the next level and was massively improved as a pass rusher in 2020. He is big, quick, and a versatile athlete also showing the ability to drop into coverage. Team sources raved about Collins in 2020 and think he could be a Sam – strong side – linebacker or Mike – middle – linebacker in a 4-3 defense or play outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.
Check out my video on racism in the NFL, which includes how the Dolphins earned praise from team staffers around the league. -
Minnesota Vikings: Daviyon Nixon, DT, Iowa
TRADE!! The Vikings move down in a trade with Washington.
The Vikings could use more young defensive line talent. Nixon would give them an interior rusher to go with Danielle Hunter and D.J. Wonnum.
Nixon was very good for Iowa in 2020, recording 5.5 sacks, 45 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception. Nixon totaled 29 tackles and three sacks in his first season of playing time for Iowa. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound junior is quick at the point of attack with an ability to fire his gape and close on the quarterback. Nixon improved his run defense in 2020 and is a well-rounded defender with upside. -
Chicago Bears: Terrace Marshall Jr., WR, LSU
The Bears could use more talent at wide receiver, and the position will be a huge need if Allen Robinson isn’t re-signed.
Marshall recorded 48 receptions for 731 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2020 before opting out of LSU’s final two games – against Alabama and Florida. Team sources were impressed with Marshall, who showed off his size, speed, and big-play ability in 2020. He flashed in 2019, recording 46 receptions for 671 yards and three touchdowns. Marshall clearly was capable of producing more, but LSU featured Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. Marshall (6-3, 200) looks like a first- or second-round talent for the 2021 NFL Draft given his size, speed, route-running and versatility. -
Jacksonville Jaguars: Sam Cosmi, OT, Texas
Jacksonville could pass on extending Cam Robinson because another team will probably overpay for a decent, but not exceptional, offensive tackle. Adding a better blind-side protector to keep Trevor Lawrence upright would make a lot of sense for the Jaguars.
Team sources like Cosmi and think he is a better prospect than Connor Williams was at Texas. They feel Cosmi is raw and needs development, but athletically, he is an interesting prospect. Cosmi (6-6, 295) still needs get stronger for the NFL. Team sources felt he should go back to school if he wanted to be a secure first-round pick in his draft class, and Cosmi wisely decided to return to Austin for 2020.
Sources who saw Cosmi earlier this year said it looks like he added some good weight since the end of 2019. As a redshirt freshman, Cosmi earned a starting spot at right tackle for the Longhorns and had an impressive debut. He did a good job in pass protection, showing some length and athleticism on the edge. -
Indianapolis Colts: Rodarius Williams, CB, Oklahoma State
The Colts could use more cornerback talent to go across from Rock Ya-Sin.
Sources from multiple teams say Williams’ play was massively improved in 2020 and, right now, they think that he will be no worse than a second-day pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Williams did not produce a huge stat line in 2020, collecting 18 tackles and seven passes broken up, but scouts love the coverage ability he displayed in this strange year.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Williams has quality size and will enter the NFL with significant experience after playing all four years for the Cowboys. However in the previous three seasons, teams threw at Williams and his play was that of a late-rounder according to team evaluators. Williams’ draft stock could continue to rise. -
Cleveland Browns: Carlos Basham, 3-4DE, Wake Forest
The Browns could move on from Olivier Vernon after this season, plus he was an acquisition of the prior regime. Even if Vernon sticks around, Cleveland could consider adding more defensive end talent to rotate with him and Myles Garrett. Basham would be a talented and cheap edge rusher to complement Garrett.
Basham totaled 28 tackles and five sacks in 2020. The 6-foot-5, 275-pounder showed a big improvement from his sophomore to junior season, going from 4.5 sacks in 2018 to 11 in 2019. His run defense remained steady with 64 tackles as a sophomore and 57 as a junior. In his breakout redshirt junior year, Basham also had three forced fumbles and three passes batted.
Basham has good size size for the NFL in terms of height and weight, plus he is faster and more athletic than one would expect. With Basham’s skill set, he has upside for the next level. He is a well-balanced defender who is tough at the point of attack. Basham is not a pure speed demon off the edge and overwhelming pass rusher, but is a consistent and well-rounded defender who should be a solid left defensive end in the NFL.
Check out my video on racism in the NFL, which includes how the Browns earned praise from team staffers around the league. -
Baltimore Ravens: Andre Cisco, S, Syracuse
The Ravens grab a replacement for Earl Thomas with a ballhawking safety.
Cisco recorded one interception and 11 tackles in 2020 prior to a season-ending injury suffered in a pre-game collision. Over his first two seasons in college football, Cisco (6-0, 203) was a pure ball hawk for Syracuse. In 2019, he recorded 65 tackles with five interceptions and five passes broken up. Cisco had a huge 2018 season with seven interceptions, 18 passes broken up, one forced fumble and 60 tackles. -
Las Vegas Raiders: Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama
TRADE!! The Raiders move down in a trade with the Titans. Las Vegas could target an interior pass rusher here.
Mike Mayock made a huge mistake by passing on Devin White and Ed Oliver for Clelin Ferrell. The Raiders could use more talent at defensive tackle and need to improve their interior pass rush.
Barmore has recorded 32 tackles, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and three passes batted in 2020. He has been a dangerous interior pass rusher capable of putting consistent heat on the quarterback. His run defense, however, needs work for the NFL.
Barmore flashed ability as part of Alabama’s rotation in 2019, recording 26 tackles and two sacks. It was only his redshirt freshman season, so he could develop and become more well-rounded as he gains experience. Some team sources are high on him, while others want to see him become a more well-rounded player and a better run defender before they see him as a high first-rounder. Hence, he might end up being more of a mid-first-round pick. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Barmore has good size with length at the point of attack to go along with quickness and athleticism, so if he works out well he could rise. -
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Rashad Weaver, 3-4DE, Pittsburgh
The Bucs could use some youth on the edge. Jason Pierre-Paul is aging, while Shaq Barrett has not been signed long term. Even if Barrett is kept around, Tampa Bay could use an end to rotate with him.
Weaver flashed his pre-injury form in 2020 and showed the ability to get after the quarterback. He totaled 34 tackles, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two passes defended in 2020. Weaver had a strong 2018 season to get on the radar for NFL advance scouts, but his redshirt junior year – 2019 – ended before it started with a season-ending injury suffered in training camp. In 2018, he had 47 tackles with 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and four passes broken up. The 6-foot-5, 270-pounder has good size to go with speed and athleticism. -
New York Jets: Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson
Clearly, the Jets need more running back talent. Here’s a high-upside tailback who could make a big difference for their offense.
Etienne totaled 168 carries for 914 yards – 5.4 average – and 14 touchdowns with 48 receptions for 588 yards and two scores in 2020. He has also suffered from ball-security issues again in 2020, fumbling against Boston College, Syracuse and Georgia Tech.
The 5-foot-10, 200-pounder played well for Clemson in 2019, showing the speed to break off long gains on any carry. He averaged 7.8 yards per carry for 1,614 yards with 18 touchdowns. He also made 37 receptions for 432 yards and four touchdowns. Etienne averaged 8.1 yards per carry in 2018 for 1,658 yards with 24 touchdowns. He also caught 12 passes for 78 yards and two scores.
Etienne is not the biggest of backs, but he runs hard for his size and is fast. If he can add weight while maintaining his speed, he could be a more dynamic back. -
Pittsburgh Steelers: Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, OLB, Notre Dame
The Steelers go best player available to grab a linebacker for next to Devin Bush.
Owusu-Koramoah (6-1, 215) has a shot at going in the opening night of the 2021 NFL Draft, but he is not the same caliber of prospect as Devin White, Roquan Smith or Patrick Willis. In 2020, Owusu-Koramoah collected 61 tackles, 1.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, three passes broken up and an interception. He had 79 tackles with 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and four passes defended in 2019.
Owusu-Koramoah is a fast linebacker with cover skills, and some team sources compared him to former Jaguar Telvin Smith. Like Smith, Owusu-Koramoah could weigh in the 215-220-pound range, which is closer to the size of a safety than a linebacker. Some teams won’t be as high on a linebacker who is underweight for the NFL. -
New Orleans Saints: Paris Ford, S, Pittsburgh
Malcolm Jenkins is an aging liability. Here’s an upgrade at safety.
Ford totaled 41 tackles, three passes broken up and three interceptions in 2020 before opting out for the remainder of the season. As a redshirt sophomore, Ford broke out for the Panthers, leading them in tackles with 97 while also showing impressive ball production in the form of three interceptions and 11 passes broken up. He also provided three forced fumbles. Ford (6-0, 190) was all over the field in both phases, and team sources said he really jumped out to them when scouting other players. -
Buffalo Bills: Dayo Odeyingbo, 3-4DE, Vanderbilt
The Bills go with the best player available to take a pass-rushing end to go with A.J. Epenesa. Jerry Hughes is aging, while Mario Addison is just a short-term contributor.
Odeyingbo totaled 32 tackles with 5.5 sacks and a pass batted in 2020. He played better than the numbers illustrate and produced steady pressure on the quarterback. The 6-foot-6, 276-pound Odeyingbo is strong at the point of attack and possesses enough power to bull his way into the pocket and hold his ground in run defense. With his quality first-step and a second gear to get upfield, Odeyingbo can use a speed rush to put heat on the quarterback. Odeyingbo is looks like a potential second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but could rise with some good workouts. -
Green Bay Packers: Alex Leatherwood, OT, Alabama
The Packers grab some young talent for the offensive line to protect Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love.
Leatherwood (6-6, 322) played well for Alabama in 2019, showing that he has a first-round skill set of size, quickness and athleticism. Leatherwood is doing a nice job in 2020, displaying good athleticism, feel, vision, and reaction skills. He produced a good tape against Georgia. In his first season, Leatherwood rotated into the game and replaced an injured Jonah Williams at left tackle to help Alabama win another National Championship. As a sophomore, Leatherwood started at right guard for the Crimson Tide. -
Miami Dolphins: Najee Harris, RB, Alabama
TRADE!! The Dolphins trade back into the first round to reunite Tua Tagovailoa with Najee Harris. Going into the first round gives the team a fifth-year option on a player’s contract, which could be real cost savings on a running back.
The Dolphins could use a more steady presence in the backfield. Harris would be a great running threat, is a quality blocker, and a receiving weapon for Tagovailoa.
Harris has averaged 5.9 yards per carry this year for 1,262 yards with 24 touchdowns. He has 32 catches for 316 yards and three touchdowns while being impressive as a blocker as well. In 2019, Harris averaged 5.9 yards per carry for 1,224 yards with 13 touchdowns. He had 27 receptions for 304 yards and seen scores as a receiver. Harris flashed at times, but some scouts don’t feel Harris is the same caliber as other recent Alabama running backs like Josh Jacobs, Damien Harris or Derrick Henry.
Harris (6-2, 230) is a big back who has some quickness and athleticism for the NFL. Over the past few seasons, he didn’t generally run to his size and looked to bounce too many carries to the outside rather than use his power to run behind his pads in a physical manner. In the latter half of 2019, especially against LSU and Mississippi State, Harris aggressively ran downhill with decisiveness. His tape from the back half of the 2019 season will help his draft grade and definitely makes him look like a better pro prospect compared to how he performed at the beginning of the season.
-
Kansas City Chiefs: Liam Eichenberg, OT, Notre Dame
TRADE!! Kansas City moved down from pick No. 32 in a trade with Miami. The Dolphins have two second-round picks, including one very high in Round 2 thanks to their ripping off the Texans in the Laremy Tunsil trade.
The Chiefs could use a right tackle upgrade. Here’s a blocker who could eventually move to left tackle as well.
Eichenberg won the left tackle job for 2018 as the replacement for Mike McGlinchey. The 6-foot-6, 305-pound Eichenberg was solid, but not overly impressive, for Notre Dame in 2019. He was wise to return for his senior year. Eichenberg was dominated by Michigan edge rusher Chase Winovich in the 2018 season opener, but after that, Eichenberg was much better for the Fighting Irish. Eichenberg possesses some physical talent, but he needs to improve his ability to handle speed rushers for the next level.
-
Los Angeles Rams: Wyatt Davis, G, Ohio State
The Rams could use more interior offensive line talent. Here’s a road grader to help Los Angeles run the ball with Cam Akers for years to come.
The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Davis has good size to him and was a tough run blocker for the Buckeyes in 2019. He is strong at the point of attack and is a bull in the ground game. For the NFL, he will need to improve his ability to take on speed rushers. Davis is stout to anchor against bull rushes, but he needs to improve his pass protection. He has given up a couple of sacks in 2020.
-
Seattle Seahawks: Brevin Jordan, TE, Miami
Greg Olsen is nearing the end of his excellent career. Here’s a replacement.
Jordan notched 30 receptions in 2020 for 480 yards and five touchdowns. He recorded 35 catches for 495 yards with two touchdowns in 2019. After a strong freshman season, Jordan (6-4, 245) helped start to re-invigorate Miami as ‘tight end U’. The Las Vegas, Nevada product had 32 receptions for 287 yards with four touchdowns in 2018. He is undersized, so growing stronger and working on his blocking will be important for the next level.
-
Houston Texans: Payton Turner, DE, Houston
Houston needs more young talent on the defensive line.
The 6-foot-6, 270-pound Turner has good size for the NFL and has shown improvement in his pass-rush ability over the past two seasons. Turner recorded 25 tackles and five sacks in 2020. In 2019, he had 34 tackles with four sacks. Turner is a sleeper who could rise with a good performance at the Senior Bowl and in pre-draft workouts. He has the size to play base end in a 4-3 or play end in a 3-4, and he also could move inside to tackle in the sub package. Team sources say Turner is raw, but he has a lot of upside with good size and is a fast defender.
