NFL Mock Draft 2023 updated April 11

This mock draft will be updated occasionally. Follow @walterfootball for NFL Draft updates.
  1. Carolina Panthers Carolina Panthers: C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State Ohio State
Before I begin, I should note that we have some new features, including WalterFootball Premium. We’ve gotten lots of complaints about the ads over the years, but there hasn’t been anything I can do about them because I’ve needed the ad revenue to pay my employees and the hosting. This is an alternative way to view the site. For $7.99 per month, you won’t get any ads. You’ll also have access to a premium chat on Discord where I’ll be every day to answer any questions. If you want to support the site, besides telling others about it, signing up for WalterFootball Premium would be a great way to do so! You can also support us by signing up with our sponsor, Prize Picks for a $100 deposit match, which is an incredible deal:

The Panthers need a franchise quarterback, which is obviously why they traded up to No. 1 (check my NFL Trade Grades page for more.) They didn’t want to settle for the third or fourth option in this class. Instead, they surrendered D.J. Moore and a package of picks to move up for the signal-caller of their choice. That’s likely to be Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud, though I wouldn’t completely rule out Anthony Richardson. I’d say it’s Stroud for now, but it’s definitely close between him and Young. Stroud completed 71 percent of his passes this past season. He’s a lethal passer, and as we saw in the college football semi-final, he can run if he needs to with his 4.65 speed.

  2. Houston Texans NFL Draft 2023 Houston Texans: Bryce Young, QB, Alabama Alabama
As mentioned prior to the Bears-Panthers trade, the Texans wouldn’t be able to get the quarterback they wanted because of their foolish decision to win in Week 18. They could have traded up to No. 1, but that would make them look extra stupid.

Houston passed on all the quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft. No one blamed them for doing that, but they won’t be able to repeat that strategy this upcoming April.

Bryce Young has size issues – he’s 5-10, 204 – but he has drawn comparisons to Kyler Murray.

  3. Arizona Cardinals Arizona Cardinals: Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon Oregon
Now that the Bears and Panthers traded picks, the Cardinals are in a great position to negotiate. The Colts, Raiders, Falcons, and Titans all need quarterbacks, yet they can no longer move up to No. 1. They won’t even be able to land a quarterback if they don’t move up to No. 3 now because one of the other teams will put the trigger. Then, the Colts will choose the final signal-caller at No. 4. Thus, I would be shocked if Arizona remained at No. 3 unless there are no buyers.

This pick is not Will Anderson because it assumes that the Cardinals will trade down to No. 4, 7, 8, or 11. I think No. 11 is most likely because, Daniel Jeremiah reported that the Titans are a team to watch to move up to the third spot. If the Cardinals trade down to No. 11, they’ll have a choice between Jalen Carter, the top cornerback in this class, or the best offensive lineman available. I wouldn’t count out Bijan Robinson either. Christian Gonzalez fills a huge need as the top cornerback.

  4. Indianapolis Colts Indianapolis Colts: Will Anderson, DE/OLB, Alabama Alabama
The Colts need to find a permanent solution at quarterback, rather than play musical chairs at the position. In a previous scenario, the Colts were trading up with the Bears to leapfrog the divisional rival Texans to obtain the quarterback they want in this class. Now, they have to hope that the team that moves up to No. 3 doesn’t take the signal-caller they like. Perhaps they’ll make the move themselves, or trade for Lamar Jackson.

Will Levis is the only quarterback remaining if a team trades up to No. 3. He could be the pick, but I’m thinking that they’d rather pass on him and select a quarterback atop the second round. I don’t think they’d pass on an elite player for Levis.

Pick change; previously Will Levis, QB

  5. Seattle Seahawks Seattle Seahawks: Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia Georgia
It’s amazing that at No. 5, the Seahawks could end up with the top prospect in this class. With the Panthers moving up to No. 1, we now know for sure that the top two picks will be a quarterback. If the Cardinals trade the third choice, there will be four quarterbacks gone after four picks, leaving the Seahawks with Will Anderson, who will provide a huge boost to their pass rush.

If, however, Anderson is off the board, the Seahawks will strongly consider Jalen Carter. The Georgia product is having a rough pre-draft session with an arrest and a horrible Pro Day workout, but the Seahawks have taken chances on troubled players in the past. Carter is a top-three prospect in this class based on the tape.

Pick change; previously Will Anderson, DE/OLB

  6. Detroit Lions Detroit Lions: Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas Texas
Charlie Campbell mocked Bijan Robinson to the Lions often throughout the pre-draft process, and it’s easy to see why. The Lions signed David Montgomery, but he’s a replacement for Jamaal Williams. Detroit wants a true home run hitter at the position, which was supposed to be D’Andre Swift, who hasn’t been able to stay healthy.

Robinson is going to be another running back chosen early in the draft, much like Saquon Barkley, who went No. 2 overall. All of his attributes are at sky-high levels. Sources have told Campbell that Robinson is the best player in this class, so he’s a potential top-10 pick.

  7. Las Vegas Raiders Las Vegas Raiders: Paris Johnson, OT/G, Ohio State Ohio State
The Raiders like Anthony Richardson, but it sounds like the plan is to move forward with Jimmy Garoppolo. In that case, the Raiders will be interested in protecting their new quarterback. They have a big hole at right tackle that they can address with this pick.

Paris Johnson has been linked to the Bears as a possibility to enhance Justin Fields’ protection. Given how often Fields was under siege last year, Chicago must consider Johnson if the top defensive linemen are off the board. Johnson has good athleticism for an offensive lineman, and he can play both tackle and guard.

  8. Atlanta Falcons Atlanta Falcons: Tyree Wilson, DE/DT, Texas Tech Texas Tech
The Falcons have ranked dead last in pressure rate in each of the past two seasons. Something must be done about this, so Atlanta could select a talented pass rusher with this pick.

Tyree Wilson has terrific traits, but hasn’t been able to work out because of a foot injury. He was recently cleared medically, so he’ll have a workout soon.

  9. Chicago Bears Chicago Bears: Peter Skoronski, OT/G/C, Northwestern Northwestern
Thanks to the incompetence of the Houston Texans, the Bears were able to obtain the top pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. They have since moved down to No. 9 in a very successful trade. This then begs the question, what do the Bears do with the ninth pick? Offensive line seems like an obvious choice, but the team’s dreadful defense must be addressed as well.

Peter Skoronski is an athletic tackle who has kept his quarterback clean. He can play every position up front, though his short arms may have him end up at guard.

Pick change; previously Jalen Carter, DT

  10. Philadelphia Eagles Philadelphia Eagles: Lukas Van Ness, DE, Iowa Iowa
Brandon Graham won’t be around much longer, so the Eagles will need an edge rusher for the future. Philadelphia’s pass rush was horrendous in the Super Bowl anyhow.

Lukas Van Ness has a relentless motor, but is a bit raw. He was a great performer at the combine.

  11. Tennessee Titans Tennessee Titans: Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida Florida
There are rumors of Derrick Henry being traded soon, which can’t be a surprise. The Titans have a new general manager and are clearly rebuilding. New regimes mean new quarterbacks, of course, so the Titans are in play to trade up to No. 3.

Anthony Richardson is raw, but has a huge arm and great athleticism. He had a great 2022 debut, but struggled versus Kentucky the following week. He was inconsistent after that, but he looked great at the combine.

  12. Houston Texans Houston Texans: Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio State Ohio State
The Texans needed a second receiver across from Brandin Cooks before they traded him. Now, they need someone to replace him.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba has incredible speed and athleticism. He had a huge 2021 campaign, which included a terrific Rose Bowl performance.

  13. New York Jets New York Jets: Broderick Jones, OT/G, Georgia Georgia
Mekhi Becton has been a huge disappointment, so the Jets may use this pick to find a new offensive tackle.

Broderick Jones is a raw lineman who showed great upside at the combine.

  14. New England Patriots New England Patriots: Darnell Wright, OT, Tennessee Tennessee
Mac Jones took a huge step backward in his second season. The primary reason for this was some horrendous offensive line play. I’m sure Bill Belichick will want to address that as soon as possible.

Darnell Wright didn’t allow a single sack to Hendon Hooker last year.

Pick change; previously Jalen Carter, DT

  15. Green Bay Packers Green Bay Packers: Quentin Johnston, WR, TCU TCU
The Seahawks waited until Russell Wilson was gone to improve their offensive line, and so the Packers could finally select a first-round wide receiver after Aaron Rodgers leaves. This is no accident. Seattle’s front office knew that Wilson could bail out the poor blocking with his legs, much like Rodgers could get the most out of mediocre receivers.

Scouts are smitten with Quentin Johnston, who has drawn comparisons to Julio Jones.

  16. Washington Commanders Washington Redskins: Brian Branch, CB/S, Alabama Alabama
The Redskins can’t cover anyone, thanks to William Jackson being a complete bust as a free agent signing. They desperately need someone new to stay with A.J. Brown and CeeDee Lamb.

Brian Branch has nice size and cover ability. He can play anywhere in the secondary.
