*** 2021 NFL MOCK DRAFT updated Oct. 7. This mock draft will be updated occasionally. Follow @walterfootball for NFL Draft updates. ***
  1. New York Jets: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson
There’s no question that the Jets would select Trevor Lawrence if they landed and kept the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. There’s was a smaller chance they’d trade the selection, but in the wake of Sam Darnold’s struggles, it’s more likely that they’d remain atop the draft and go with the best quarterback prospect we’ve seen in years.

The truth is that Darnold has regressed over the years. He looked lost in the opener versus the Bills, and then he threw two pick-sixes at Indianapolis. I blame Adam Gase, but Darnold is at fault as well. I imagine the Jets would treat Darnold like Josh Rosen, trading him for a second-round selection and then taking a new quarterback first overall. It worked for Arizona.

Lawrence is the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He has it all, and that includes size (6-6, 215), a big arm, accuracy and mobility.

  2. Atlanta Falcons: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
It’s almost hard to believe, but Matt Ryan is turning 36 this spring. He’s not the problem with the Falcons, but I could see this franchise undergoing a complete overhaul this offseason if they finish with a top-two pick. New regimes mean new quarterbacks, and it would be very difficult for the Falcons to pass on the talented Justin Fields if they don’t trade the selection.

Fields made the egregious mistake of committing to a program with a talented, young quarterback in Jake Fromm, so he was blocked from starting. Fields, however, was able to transfer to Ohio State, where he dominated in his first season.

  3. New York Giants: Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU
I like Darius Slayton, but he’s better served as a No. 2 receiver. The Giants’ offense would be so much more explosive with a dynamic threat like Ja’Marr Chase.

Chase caught 17 passes in his freshman year, then took a huge step forward in 2019, displaying the ability of a top-10 prospect.

Pick change; previously Gregory Rousseau, DE

  4. Miami Dolphins: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon
The Dolphins need to make sure Tua Tagovailoa is protected as well as possible. Upgrades to one of the league’s worst offensive lines must be made.

Penei Sewell was so good as a sophomore, he received a second-place Heisman vote.

Pick change; previously Ja’Marr Chase, WR

  5. Dallas Cowboys: Gregory Rousseau, DE, Miami
The Cowboys can’t count on Aldon Smith doing much beyond this year. They’ll need to find another edge rusher.

Gregory Rousseau logged double-digit sacks as a redshirt freshman in 2019. He was compared to Calais Campbell entering Miami.

Pick change; previously Joe Tryon, DE

  6. Washington Redskins: Sam Cosmi, OT, Texas
The Trent Williams drama finally came to a conclusion when the Redskins traded him to the 49ers. They’ll need a new left tackle to protect Dwayne Haskins.

Sam Cosmi is very athletic, but is considered raw at the moment. He appears to have added strength in 2020.

Pick change; previously Jalen Mayfield, OT

  7. Los Angeles Chargers: Alex Leatherwood, OT/G, Alabama
The Chargers did a good job of upgrading their offensive line this offseason by adding Trai Turner and Bryan Bulaga. They still need a left tackle to replace Russell Okung.

Alex Leatherwood, a former five-star recruit, has excellent strength to be a stellar run blocker and the athleticism to block elite edge rushers.

Pick change; previously Walker Little, OT

  8. Miami Dolphins: Joe Tryon, DE, Washington
The Dolphins don’t have much of a pass rush, so this is an area they’ll need to upgrade this upcoming offseason.

Joe Tryon came out of nowhere to have a breakout 2019 campaign. He has a nice frame (6-5, 262) and tons of upside to be an impactful edge rusher in the NFL.

Pick change; previously Paris Ford, S

  9. Detroit Lions: Carlos Basham, DE/DT, Wake Forest
The Packers dunked on the Lions in Week 2 by pounding Aaron Jones down their throat. Detroit lost a ton of talent on the defensive line in the previous offseason, so that area must be addressed.

Carlos Basham always stuffed the run well, but his pass rush improved tremendously from 2018 to 2019.

Pick change; previously Christian Barmore, DE/DT

  10. Denver Broncos: Jalen Mayfield, OT, Michigan
Garett Bolles is a penalty machine, while Ja’Wuan James may never play for the Broncos. Denver needs to give Drew Lock better protection.

Jalen Mayfield did a great job against Chase Young late in 2019, showcasing his athletic potential.

Pick change; previously Penei Sewell, OT

  11. Jacksonville Jaguars: Andre Cisco, S, Syracuse
The Jaguars used a first-round pick on C.J. Henderson last year, but they’re just beginning to fix their once-great secondary. Safety is a huge hole that must be filled.

Andre Cisco has a chance to sneak into the first round when he declares, as he’s been a very productive player.

Pick change; previously Alex Leatherwood, OT/G

  12. Minnesota Vikings: Christian Barmore, DE/DT, Alabama
The Vikings have needed a starting defensive tackle next to Linval Joseph for quite some time. Now, they need a starter next to Michael Pierce, or perhaps a replacement for Pierce if he balloons up to 380 pounds during his opt-out.

Christian Barmore has nice length, quickness and athleticism.

Pick change; previously Carlos Basham, DE/DT

  13. Cincinnati Bengals: Walker Little, OT, Stanford
Joe Burrow is doing so well considering that he doesn’t have much time to throw. The Bengals need to fill the numerous holes they have on the offensive line.

Walker Little was projected as a top-10 prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft before he suffered an injury. He’ll be back to that designation in 20201 if he can show that he’s healthy.

Pick change; previously Sam Cosmi, OT

  14. Carolina Panthers: Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama
The Panthers were going to choose C.J. Henderson if Derrick Brown wasn’t available, which makes sense because they lost James Bradberry in free agency.

Son of former Dolphins star cornerback Patrick Surtain Sr., Surtain II was tested early by teams, yet was able to punish opponents for doing so. The 6-foot-2 cornerback projects as a top-15 pick in the future.

  15. Arizona Cardinals: Shaun Wade, CB, Ohio State
The Cardinals have needed a No. 2 cornerback across from Patrick Peterson for quite some time. They may need a replacement soon because Peterson’s contract expires soon.

Shaun Wade has a ton of upside and was able to produce well in the slot in 2019. He’s expected to move outside this year.

Pick change; previously Josh Jobe, CB

  16. Las Vegas Raiders: Dylan Moses, LB, Alabama
It was shocking that the Raiders didn’t select Patrick Queen at No. 19 overall. Perhaps they’ll obtain a linebacker here instead.

Dylan Moses, a former five-star recruit, missed a chunk of his freshman campaign, but was very productive as a sophomore. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL.
