2015 NFL Trade Mock: Picks 1-16

  1. St. Louis Rams: La’el Collins, G/OT, LSU
The Rams need to upgrade the right tackle position after losing Joseph Barksdale to free agency this offseason. The Browns told La’el Collins that they have him listed as their top right tackle in this class, so perhaps the Rams feel the same way.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Pittsburgh Steelers: Landon Collins, S, Alabama
*** Trade 6: Pittsburgh trades No. 22, and fourth- and fifth-round picks to Kansas City for the No. 18 selection, seventh-round pick. ***

The Steelers would love to land Landon Collins, but the Alabama safety could come off the board to the Titans or Eagles in this scenario. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are looking for a right tackle, and because there are so many talented players at that position still available, they can afford to move down.

Pick change; previously La’el Collins, OT/G

  3. Tennessee Titans: Eric Kendricks, ILB, UCLA
Eric Kendricks is almost certain to be chosen in the first round, as there is a ton of interest in him. He might even go this high. The Titans definitely could be looking for help at inside linebacker early in the 2015 NFL Draft.

  4. Carolina Panthers: D.J. Humphries, OT/G, Florida
*** Trade 7: Carolina trades No. 25, and fourth-round pick to Philadelphia for the No. 20 selection. ***

Everyone talks about the Eagles moving up for Marcus Mariota. That could happen, but it’s more likely that they’ll trade down so they can pick up extra draft picks and obtain one of the two Pac-12 receivers. The Panthers, meanwhile, can rise to No. 20 to land the blue-chip pass-protector they desperately need.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Randy Gregory, DE/OLB, Nebraska
Same pick as the real mock: Randy Gregory drops to No. 21, and it’s not just because of the positive marijuana test. There are other concerns with Gregory that could potentially cause him to slip out of the first round. I’d have to imagine, however, that the Bengals would consider him at this juncture. Marvin Lewis is all about giving players second chances, and Gregory makes sense in terms of a needs perspective. Cincinnati re-signed Michael Johnson this offseason, but the agreement can be just a short-term deal if Johnson doesn’t get his act together. The Bengals have to improve their pass rush, so Gregory will be insurance in case Johnson continues to disappoint.

  6. Kansas City Chiefs: Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami
As mentioned earlier, the Chiefs can move down and still find an upgrade on the offensive line because there are a ton of first-round-caliber tackles available in this class.

  7. Detroit Lions: Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin
I’m keeping this one the same: Reggie Bush was released earlier in the offseason, so the Lions will need to find someone to split the load with Joique Bell. Detroit’s front office typically likes picking the top player available, and Melvin Gordon could fit that description, as he has drawn comparisons to Jamaal Charles.

  8. Arizona Cardinals: Jordan Phillips, NT, Oklahoma
Another pick that happens to be the same as the one in my real 2015 NFL Mock Draft: The Cardinals have lost a number of talented defensive players over the past couple of years. One is nose tackle Dan Williams, who signed with the Raiders. His departure leaves a huge hole at nose tackle, so Arizona could target Jordan Phillips with this selection. It could be argued that Phillips is the best player available here.

  9. Indianapolis Colts: Cameron Erving, OT/G/C, Florida State
*** Trade 8: Indianapolis trades No. 29, and fourth-round pick to Philadelphia for the No. 25 selection. ***

The Eagles move down again, so I’ll get to them later. The Colts, meanwhile, have to be desperate to upgrade their offensive line. Cameron Erving makes so much sense for them, considering that they have holes at both guard and center. Erving can start and be an upgrade in either spot.

  10. Baltimore Ravens: Breshad Perriman, WR, Central Florida
Here’s another pick I’m keeping the same: The Ravens will be looking for an offensive weapon with one of their first couple of draft picks. The receiver position needs help; Torrey Smith is an impending free agent, while Steve Smith, who turns 36 in May, won’t be around for very long.

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford
*** Trade 9: Tampa Bay trades No. 34 and fourth-round pick to Dallas for the No. 27 selection. ***

The Buccaneers move into the back end of the first round to take a left tackle. Teams that pick franchise quarterbacks often use their next selection on a weapon or a blocker. Tampa needs a blind-side protector to shield Jameis Winston. The Cowboys, meanwhile, can just take a cornerback like Kevin Johnson, Ronald Darby or Byron Jones at No. 34.

  12. Denver Broncos: Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE/OLB, UCLA
This will be the same: The Broncos are switching to a 3-4 defense under Wade Phillips, so one of the positions they’ll need to address is outside linebacker. They have Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware slated to start there, but they don’t have much depth behind them. Besides, counting on a 33-year-old Ware to be productive for the entire season would be a mistake.

  13. Philadelphia Eagles: Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State
As I wrote earlier, the Eagles can afford to move down a few spots – nine in this trade mock – if they want to pick one of the two Pac-12 receivers. At least one of Jaelen Strong or Nelson Agholor will be available at this juncture.

  14. Green Bay Packers: Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest
This is not an ideal selection for the Packers, but if Eric Kendricks isn’t available, they could select Kevin Johnson. The cornerback position needs bolstering, and Johnson happens to fit what Green Bay looks for in terms of scheme.

  15. New Orleans Saints: Phillip Dorsett, WR, Miami
I’m keeping this pick the same, so that means the 10th trade can only happen via the Patriots…

  16. Washington Redskins: Ronald Darby, CB, Florida State
*** Trade 10: Washington trades No. 38, and fifth- and sixth-round picks to New England for the No. 32 selection. ***

The Patriots moved down? WHAT!? Bill Belichick would never move out of the first round, so make sure you remember that this is just a projection.

In all seriousness, Washington is desperate for secondary help at both corner and safety. There are a number of teams that could take a cornerback early in the second round, including the Cowboys, who traded down in this mock, so it might make sense for the Redskins to move up.
