2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1 – Picks 17-32

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

  1. San Diego Chargers: Vic Beasley, DE/OLB, Clemson
    San Diego’s defense has been better of late, but the team should still probably go with the top defensive player on the board. That would be Vic Beasley.

    The Chargers were so desperate for help at rush linebacker that they signed Dwight Freeney. The former Colt is obviously not a long-term solution for the team’s pass-rushing woes.

  2. Green Bay Packers: Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech
    With Jermichael Finley heading for free agency, Green Bay could grab a replacement. Jace Amaro has been fantastic this year, and he’s the top tight end if he leaves Texas Tech. As Charlie Campbell reported, Jace Amaro is likely declaring for the 2014 NFL Draft, but nothing is definite yet.

  3. Miami Dolphins: Cameron Erving, OT, Florida State
    Cameron Erving is a perfect fit for this blocking scheme, and he would still be a big upgrade for the Dolphins at left tackle. Considering everything that has happened this season with Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito, Miami has to address the offensive line early and often.

  4. Arizona Cardinals: Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
    It’s no secret the Cardinals need to bolster their offensive line. Bruce Arians has done a great job of masking this weakness, but Arizona’s offense would be so much more explosive with better play up front. Jonathan Cooper will be back next year, and that will help, but the Cardinals need to upgrade Bradley Sowell at left tackle. Taylor Lewan has disappointed this year, but he’s still worthy of this selection.



  5. Philadelphia Eagles: C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
    The Eagles could be hunting for a new 3-4 inside linebacker, so why not draft a player who is already familiar with that formation? C.J. Mosley could replace another former Alabama linebacker in DeMeco Ryans, who will be due close to $7 million next year. Even if the Eagles keep Ryans, they may want to upgrade Mychal Kendricks. Inside linebacker isn’t Philadelphia’s greatest need, but Mosley is the best player available.

  6. Chicago Bears: Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State
    Henry Melton, an impending free agent, tore his ACL earlier in the season. This could make it easier for the Bears to keep him, but they’ll need a replacement if he walks.

    Charlie Campbell recently reported that a scout believes Timmy Jernigan will be a late first-round pick.

  7. Baltimore Ravens: Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
    Michael Oher has been a nice story, but his Baltimore chapter could be over soon. He’s a free agent come March, and given his very inconsistent play, the Ravens could be looking in another direction to help their anemic offensive line.

  8. Cleveland Browns: Marqise Lee, WR, USC
    Teams that spend early picks on quarterbacks usually take an offensive player to complement that signal-caller with their next selection. Think Matthew Stafford-Brandon Pettigrew, Sam Bradford-Rodger Saffold, Andrew Luck-Coby Fleener, etc. The Browns need a No. 2 receiver to upgrade Greg “Mr. Dependable” Little.



  9. Cincinnati Bengals: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
    Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has done a great job of getting the most out of Terence Newman and Pacman Jones, but the Bengals will have to get younger at cornerback sooner or later. Leon Hall’s second torn Achilles makes this an even more pressing need.

  10. Carolina Panthers: Antonio Richardson, OT, Tennessee
    Jordan Gross is a free agent this season. He has said he’ll only play for Carolina, but he also discussed retirement. Even if he comes back, the Panthers will need to think about bringing in a long-term solution at left tackle, as well as an immediate upgrade over right tackle Byron Bell, who couldn’t block Junior Galette.

  11. San Francisco 49ers: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon
    The 49ers need to fix their secondary. Their group of cornerbacks isn’t very strong, as Carlos Rogers has understandably declined at 32. He’s due $6.25 million next year, so San Francisco could cut ties with him. The 49ers extended Tramaine Brock – click the link for that grade – but they’ll still need corner help.

  12. Kansas City Chiefs: Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
    Alex Smith struggles with downfield passes, so the Chiefs may want to bring in a reliable intermediate target for him. They need to upgrade the tight end position anyway, and they can do so with one of the top players available.

  13. New England Patriots: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
    With Aaron Hernandez gone forever and Rob Gronkowski coming off a serious knee injury, the Patriots may want to bring in another talented tight end. Austin Seferian-Jenkins is currently the No. 3 tight end in this class, but he’s still well worth a late first-round pick.

  14. New Orleans Saints: Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB, BYU
    The Saints had several holes to fill in the 2013 NFL Draft, so they weren’t able to obtain a pass-rusher until the sixth round with Rufus Johnson. They’ll probably need to do so earlier in May. They couldn’t get to Russell Wilson at all in the big Monday night loss. Junior Galette has been awesome, but New Orleans needs a potent pass-rusher across from him.

  15. Denver Broncos: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
    What’s better than Peyton Manning and four awesome targets? Peyton Manning and four awesome targets with upgraded protection. Zane Beadles, the weak link on a solid Denver front, is an impending free agent.

  16. Seattle Seahawks: Scott Crichton, DE/OLB, Oregon State
    The Seahawks can afford to go with the best player available. They signed a couple of defensive ends last offseason to short-term deals, so they may want to find a decade-long solution at the position.
