The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is somewhat random.

  1. New York Jets: Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB

The Jets have to keep Mark Sanchez on the roster next season because cutting him would result in a $17.1 million cap hit. Giving Sanchez such a contract was a fireable offense, so it’s no surprise that the Jets now have a new general manager.

Fortunately, New York can get out of Sanchez’s nightmare deal following the 2013 campaign, and its fans can finally move on to a real quarterback. Maybe Fireman Ed will even return.

I had Jadeveon Clowney going first overall in my previous 2014 NFL Mock Draft, but I’m dropping him out of the top spot. He’s still the best player projected to be available, but the demand for quarterbacks is too great. Besides, Teddy Bridgewater and Johnny Manziel are much better than the signal-callers entering this April’s draft.

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Star Lotulelei, NT

Anyone who thinks Johnny Manziel is too small to be chosen in the top five is completely mistaken. Manziel currently stands at 6-foot-1, 200. That’s taller than Drew Brees and Russell Wilson. Robert Griffin (6-2, 220) is pretty much the same size as Manziel will be following next season. Manziel also boasts a very good arm and great accuracy. There’s no reason why he can’t be a top-five selection if he continues to play as he did in his Heisman campaign.

You know a team’s quarterback situation is dire when Chad Henne represents some hope. Jacksonville isn’t going anywhere until it addresses this position.

  3. Oakland Raiders: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Damontre Moore, DE/OLB

The Raiders are terrible for many reasons, one of which is their inability to put pressure on the quarterback. Only the Jaguars finished with fewer sacks this past season.

Jadeveon Clowney makes sense, even after adding Damontre Moore. First of all, left end Lamarr Houston will be a free agent after this upcoming season, and he could prove to be too expensive for the cap-strapped Raiders. Second, Clowney is the best player available by a wide margin. Oakland simply cannot pass on him. The team could always move Houston to defensive tackle if it decides to retain him.

  4. Kansas City Chiefs: Marqise Lee, WR, USC
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Geno Smith, QB

The Chiefs will likely find a potential franchise quarterback this upcoming April, but they’ll need to complement him with a No. 1 receiver, as Dwayne Bowe is set to leave via free agency.

Marqise Lee has enjoyed a terrific 2012 campaign and is currently projected to be a top-five pick despite the recent USC wideout failures.

  5. Arizona Cardinals: David Fales, QB, San Jose State
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Eric Fisher, OT

This class is rich in quarterback prospects, which includes David Fales, who is coming off a tremendous season for San Jose State. The Cardinals desperately need a franchise quarterback, but they may have to wait until the 2014 NFL Draft to get one.

I have Arizona picking E.J. Manuel in the second round of my 2013 NFL Mock Draft, but this 2014 NFL Mock Draft only takes my projected first-round selections into account. Besides, Manuel couldn’t possibly have been that good if the Cardinals have the fifth overall pick.

  6. Tennessee Titans: Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): DeMarcus Milliner, CB

It’s no surprise that Jake Matthews returned to school, given that his father, Hall-of-Famer Bruce Matthews, wanted his son to earn his degree. Plus, it’s not like Jake needed the money.

The Titans are fine at offensive tackle right now, but Michael Roos and David Stewart will be free agents in 2015 and 2014, respectively (the latter has a voidable year after this upcoming season). They’ll need to retool at the position if they don’t re-sign either of the two.

  7. Philadelphia Eagles: Anthony Barr, DE/OLB, UCLA
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Luke Joeckel, OT

The Eagles are transitioning to the 3-4, which is a curious move because they don’t necessarily have the appropriate personnel. Brandon Graham and Trent Cole may not be able to play in that scheme, so Philadelphia may have to bring in a pass-rusher who can.

A former running back, Anthony Barr played defense for the first time this past season and made an instant impact, recording 13 sacks. The sky’s the limit for him, as he’ll only get better at his new position.

  8. Cleveland Browns: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Ezekiel Ansah, DE/OLB

Sheldon Brown enjoyed a great season, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be back in 2013. Even if he returns, he’ll be 35 a month prior to the 2014 NFL Draft, so Cleveland will need to find some young blood at cornerback.

Bradley Roby considered declaring for the 2013 NFL Draft. If he had, he’d be probably be the second corner off the board. He had a ridiculous 17 pass break-ups as a redshirt sophomore.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Mike Glennon, QB

Bills general manager Buddy Nix stated that he wants to update the quarterback and receiver positions this offseason. If he can’t address the latter this spring, he could make an effort to acquire a No. 1 wideout in the 2014 NFL Draft. Buffalo has to find a worthy complement for Stevie Johnson.

  10. San Diego Chargers: Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB, BYU
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Lane Johnson, OT

The Chargers spent a first-round pick on rush linebacker Melvin Ingram in the 2012 NFL Draft, but they may need to double dip at the position because Shaun Phillips is heading for free agency this offseason. Players like Barkevious Mingo and Dion Jordan make sense for San Diego at No. 11 this April. If the Chargers go with Lane Johnson instead, they’ll consider Kyle Van Noy, who logged 13 sacks in 2012, including 5.5 in his final three games.

  11. St. Louis Rams: Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Chance Warmack, G and Cordarrelle Patterson, WR

The Rams have to find weapons and protection for Sam Bradford because he barely has anything to work with. They need a left tackle, but unless they can sign Jake Long, they’ll probably have to wait until next offseason to obtain one.

No. 11 overall is probably where Taylor Lewan would go had he declared for the 2013 NFL Draft, but a year is a long time and a lot can happen. He took an enormous risk with virutally no upside by deciding to return to Michigan.

  12. Minnesota Vikings: Stephon Tuitt, DT, Notre Dame
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Johnathan Hankins, NT

The Vikings currently need a defensive tackle next to Kevin Williams, but they also have to find a successor for the long-time Minnesota Pro Bowler, who will be 34 a few months after the 2014 NFL Draft. Stephon Tuitt would be the perfect replacement, given that he’s a force in all aspects (11 sacks in 2013).

  13. Carolina Panthers: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Sharrif Floyd, DT

The Panthers will need some cornerback help soon. Captain Munnerlyn will be a free agent this offseason, while rookie Josh Norman has yet to prove that he can be a quality starter in the NFL.

A 6-1 corner with a potential high 4.3 40, Loucheiz Purifoy is a beast on special teams in terms of blocking kicks. He had two blocks in 2012.

  14. Indianapolis Colts: Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): John Jenkins, NT

Winston Justice actually played surprisingly well during the early stages of the 2012 season, but his play has dropped off during the latter stages. Plus, he cannot seem to stay healthy, as he was constantly running on and off the field with various maladies. Andrew Luck is just too valuable to the organization for Indianapolis to keep relying on Justice. The Colts need to improve Luck’s pass protection.

  15. Detroit Lions: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Bjoern Werner, DE/OLB

When’s the last time the Lions haven’t had issues at cornerback? It seems like eons. They could perhaps fix that here, as Chris Houston is an impending free agent, while Bullet Bill Bentley has yet to prove himself as a capable starter (though he didn’t have much of a chance in 2012 because of a season-ending injury early on).

    Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, a third-team All-American, intercepted four passes and had 16 pass break-ups as a sophomore.

  16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 2/7): Johnthan Banks, CB

The Buccaneers want an upgrade at the tight end position. Luke Stocker hasn’t developed, and acquiring a talented intermediate target would really help Josh Freeman.

It’s not usual to see a tight end go this high, but Austin Seferian-Jenkins is an absolute stud. He’ll be a matchup nightmare, much like Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham.
