2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014. Major changes in all 4 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** This 2014 NFL Mock Draft (4 rounds) was updated Jan. 22. This mock draft will be updated at least once per week (Tuesday afternoons and other times for important events.). Check out old versions of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft in the archived mock draft section. Follow @walterfootball for updates. ***

  1. Houston Texans: Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB, BYU
The Texans would kill two stones with one bird with this pick, as Emmitt would say. They need to upgrade their pass rush and find some help at inside linebacker. Kyle Van Noy would satisfy the former, which would allow Brooks Reed to move inside.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Washington Redskins: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
It’s likely the top defensive player available for Washington. DeAngelo Hall and Josh Wilson are free agents, but they needed to be upgraded anyway.

Pick change; previously Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT

  3. Cleveland Browns: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
The Browns desperately need a No. 2 receiver to upgrade Greg “Mr. Dependable” Little. There will be tons of options for them in Round 2.

Pick change; previously Ka’Deem Carey, RB

  4. Oakland Raiders: Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
Matt McGloin and Terrelle Pryor have both exceeded expectations and played well at times this year, but that can be attributed to offensive coordinator Greg Olson’s excellent coaching. Olson has gotten the most out of these two, as well as Josh Freeman and Chad Henne (Blaine Gabbert was a lost cause). Imagine what he’ll do with a legitimate franchise quarterback.

I’ve had Derek Carr in the top 10 recently, but he could have a free fall if the Vikings don’t pick him at No. 8. There are no other obvious matches for him. Tennessee comes close at No. 11, but the front office will likely give Jake Locker another shot. Besides, it’s not like Carr is this great prospect. There are definite holes in his game.

By the way, I had Tajh Boyd here in my previous mock. Tajh Boyd told us the Raiders have shown the most interest, but Carr’s the better prospect.

Pick change; previously Tajh Boyd, QB

  5. Atlanta Falcons: Xavier Su’a-Filo, G, UCLA
The Falcons have some major issues on the offensive line. Everyone wants to look at left tackle, but the guard position is an area that must be upgraded as well.

  6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Odell Beckham, WR, LSU
Mike Glennon’s options are rather limited once you get beyond Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams. The Buccaneers will be searching for a new No. 3 receiver this offseason.

Pick change; previously Trent Murphy, DE/OLB

  7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent (go here to check out my 2014 NFL Free Agent Rankings). He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

Pick change; previously Tre Mason, RB

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
Minnesota’s new quarterback? If the Vikings pass on Derek Carr at No. 8, they’ll have to take Tajh Boyd, Zack Mettenberger or even someone like Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round.

Pick change; previously Gabe Jackson, G

  9. Buffalo Bills: Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame
This offseason has to be all about building around E.J. Manuel. Buffalo already upgraded its offensive line; now it has to find a potent intermediate weapon for the second-year quarterback.

  10. Tennessee Titans: Tre Mason, RB, Auburn
There have been reports indicating that Chris Johnson will be cut this offseason. If that’s the case, Tennessee will obviously be searching for a new lead running back.

Pick change; previously Antonio Richardson, OT

  11. New York Giants: Antonio Richardson, OT, Tennessee
Will Beatty, who struggled at times in 2013, broke his leg in the season finale and may not be ready for Week 1. There was already some speculation that he could move to right tackle, with Justin Pugh shifting inside to his more natural guard position.

Pick change; previously Morgan Moses, OT

  12. St. Louis Rams: Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
Kendall Langford probably won’t be on St. Louis’ roster beyond the 2014 season, so it’ll be in the front office’s best interest to acquire a potential future starter at the position.

Pick change; previously Davante Adams, WR

  13. Detroit Lions: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
Dominic Raiola has seemingly been on Detroit’s roster forever, but he’ll be a 35-year-old free agent in March. The Lions will probably bring in a new center.

Pick change; previously Bryan Stork, C

  14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
The Steelers have to address the cornerback position. Ike Taylor was dreadful this past year, as the receivers he battled – save for A.J. Green, oddly enough – posted season-high totals against him.

Pick change; previously Loucheiz Purifoy, CB

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville
Dallas had horrible safety play all year. An upgrade in this area would have allowed it to beat Philadelphia in Week 17.

Pick change; previously David Yankey, G/OT

  16. Baltimore Ravens: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
It should be quite apparent that the Ravens desperately need help at receiver. Neither Jacoby Jones nor Marlon Brown should be a No. 2 wideout in the NFL. Think Joe Flacco misses Anquan Boldin?

  17. New York Jets: Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State
Geno Smith has looked like the worst quarterback in the NFL on many occasions this season – even worse than Brandon Weeden and Jeff Tuel – but it’s not like he has much of a chance with his horrific receiving corps. Santonio Holmes can’t stay healthy, while Stephen Hill is a bust.

Pick change; previously Davante Adams, WR

  18. Miami Dolphins: Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
Considering everything that has happened this season with Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito, Miami has to address the offensive line early and often.

Pick change; previously Kyle Fuller, CB

  19. Chicago Bears: Lamarcus Joyner, S, Florida State
As written in the Bears team needs page, Major Wright is a free agent. Chris Conte, well, I don’t think Chicago fans are going to forget his ineptitude in the win-and-in season finale anytime soon.

Pick change; previously Aaron Donald, DT

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Trevor Reilly, DE/OLB, Utah
The Cardinals, who typically go with the top player on their board, will almost definitely be interested in someone like Trevor Reilly, as they really need an upgrade at outside linebacker across from Sam Acho. John Abraham, 36 in May, won’t be effective much longer.

  21. Green Bay Packers: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Packers need pass-rushing depth in the event that Clay Matthews gets hurt again. As Charlie Campbell reported, the Packers are very interested in Trent Murphy.

Pick change; previously Calvin Pryor, S

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Dion Bailey, S, USC
Philadelphia’s defense was terrible for many reasons, one of which is the safety position. Nate Allen is an impending free agent, while Patrick Chung is absolutely terrible.

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
Mike Zimmer did a great job of getting the most out of Terence Newman and Pacman Jones, but he’s moved on to be the head coach in Minnesota. The Bengals will have to compensate with some new corners.

Bradley Roby is slotted pretty low in this mock because he played poorly this previous season. He’s also had some off-the-field issues. I think the Bengals would take a chance on him though.

Pick change; previously Jackson Jeffcoat, DE

  24. San Francisco 49ers: Craig Loston, S, LSU
The 49ers spent a first-round pick on a safety last year, but they may have to use another selection on one with Donte Whitner heading into free agency.

  25. San Diego Chargers: Michael Sam, DE/OLB, Missouri
The Chargers were so desperate for help at rush linebacker that they signed Dwight Freeney last offseason. The former Colt is obviously not a long-term solution for the team’s pass-rushing woes. He wasn’t even a short-term answer.

Pick change; previously Jason Verrett, CB

  26. New Orleans Saints: Christian Jones, LB, Florida State
Here’s more help for the Saints’ linebacking corps. David Hawthorne has never lived up to expectations, so the front office may want to find someone who can challenge him.

  27. Indianapolis Colts: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
I know the Colts need lots of defensive help, but they also need to upgrade the interior of their offensive line to keep Andrew Luck upright.

Pick change; previously Lamarcus Joyner, S

  28. Carolina Panthers: Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas
It’s going to be difficult for the Panthers to keep Greg Hardy because of financial implications. If they lose him, they’ll need a replacement at defensive end.

Pick change; previously Corey Robinson, OT

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers will need a new receiver to complement Michael Crabtree.

Pick change; previously Odell Beckham, WR

  30. New England Patriots: Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

Pick change; previously Travis Swanson, C

  31. Denver Broncos: Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
You have to wonder what the Broncos plan on doing at cornerback in 2014 and beyond. Champ Bailey and Quentin Jammer will be 36 and 35, respectively, in June. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, meanwhile, will be a free agent in March.

Pick change; previously Cyril Richardson, G/OT

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor
The Seahawks have multiple areas of concern on their offensive line, including both guard spots. Imagine how potent Russell Wilson would be with upgraded protection.

Pick change; previously Paul Richardson, WR
