2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1 – Picks 17-32

Last update: Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. Major changes in all 3 rounds.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. St. Louis Rams: Chance Warmack, G, Alabama
Guards seldom have a chance to go in the top 15, but Chance Warmack has a shot because he’s a special talent. Besides, he’s the top prospect available who makes sense for St. Louis.

The Rams desperately need to upgrade their offensive front. Jeff Fisher played against the Texans twice per year when he was with Tennessee, and he watched Houston completely ruin David Carr’s career by not building a competent offensive line around him. He won’t want to make the same mistake with Sam Bradford.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Dallas Cowboys: Ezekiel Ansah, DE/OLB, BYU
Anthony Spencer has played well when healthy this year, but he’ll be a free agent this March who will be difficult to retain. If he leaves, the Cowboys will have to find a worthy complement across from DeMarcus Ware.

Ezekiel Ansah doesn’t have much experience, but he’s a highly athletic pass-rusher who has tremendous upside. He’s naturally drawing comparisons to Jason Pierre-Paul. I’m sure Jerry Jones would love to have a JPP of his own.

Pick change; previously Johnathan Jenkins, NT

  3. New York Giants: Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
The Giants have issues in the middle of their defense. The safety position is a problem, as is inside linebacker. Chase Blackburn shouldn’t be starting, while Keith Rivers, a free agent in March, can never get healthy. Alec Ogletree is the top player available.

Pick change; previously Ezekiel Ansah, DE/OLB

  4. Chicago Bears: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
Jon Gruden highlighted the fact that the Bears haven’t had a reliable pass-catching tight end since Greg Olsen was on the team. They jettisoned Olsen because Mike Martz hates receiving tight ends, but Martz is long gone, so it’s time for them to go back to that. Jay Cutler would really benefit from having a dependable target over the middle of the field. After all, Cutler can’t keep throwing it to Brandon Marshall on every single play.

Pick change; previously Alec Ogletree, ILB

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
Geno Atkins is a monster in the interior, but the Bengals have to find pass-rushing help on the outside, given that Michael Johnson is set to hit free agency. Sam Montgomery is arguably the top player available, so Cincinnati can fill a big need with the top prospect on the board.

  6. St. Louis Rams: Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
I don’t know if the Rams necessarily go with a receiver anymore. Chris Givens has looked great and then there’s Danny Amendola. By taking a wideout in the first round, St. Louis would be giving up on Brian Quick after one year. I don’t think the front office will do that unless it’s smitten with a particular receiver.

The Rams’ defense is playing great, but they have a couple of areas they need to address. One such spot is the safety position. Craigh Dahl must be upgraded.

  7. Minnesota Vikings: Bennie Logan, DT, LSU
The Vikings can address one of their biggest needs with arguably the best player available. Defensive tackle is a big issue right now; Kevin Williams will turn 33 in August, and there’s no one of note playing next to him. Letroy Guion is a decent rotational guy but should not be a starter.

I haven’t listed Bennie Logan in my mock drafts in a long time, but the LSU product is reportedly expected to declare. He’ll likely be chosen in the middle of the first round.

Pick change; previously Cordarrelle Patterson, WR

  8. Indianapolis Colts: Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama
The Colts couldn’t get the ball back from the Texans when it mattered most because they couldn’t stop Arian Foster. They’ve been gashed in the running game all season because nose tackle Antonio Johnson has been pushed around. Indianapolis needs a legitimate nose tackle.

  9. Baltimore Ravens: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
The Ravens wanted Dont’a Hightower, but the Patriots moved ahead of them and stole him. Maybe Ozzie Newsome will select another SEC linebacker as a successor for Ray Lewis in April. Lewis was thought to be out for the year with torn triceps. His career could be over very soon.

Pick change; previously C.J. Mosley, ILB

  10. Seattle Seahawks: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
The Seahawks’ receiving corps really needs to be upgraded. Sidney Rice is constantly laboring through injuries and has struggled to get any sort of separation for most of the season. Golden Tate, meanwhile, is way too inconsistent, though he’s been better lately. Russell Wilson keeps improving every week, so Pete Carroll needs to bolster his wideout corps.

This is a bit high for Terrance Williams, but the Seahawks don’t fear taking anyone who is deemed a reach. Pete Carroll will likely fall in love with Williams’ size and straight-line speed.

  11. San Francisco 49ers: Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma
Donte Whitner hasn’t been very good this year. Dashon Goldson, meanwhile, was slapped with a franchise tag this prior offseason. The 49ers will need a replacement if they can’t sign him to a long-term deal.

Pick change; previously Matt Elam, S

  12. New England Patriots: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
It’s amazing that New England’s offense has been this incredible considering that Deion Branch was playing two-thirds of the snaps every game prior to being released. Imagine how explosive the Patriots would be if they added a legitimate threat opposite Brandon Lloyd. They also have to think about a possible future without Wes Welker, who will be a free agent this offseason. New England has shown that it doesn’t value Welker as much, so another team could offer him way more money.

  13. Green Bay Packers: Keenan Allen, WR, California
Greg Jennings will be a free agent in March. He’s proven to be unreliable in terms of staying healthy, so the Packers may choose not to re-sign him. If so, they may target a receiver early in the 2013 NFL Draft. Keenan Allen is the top player available in this situation, so I doubt Ted Thompson would hesitate to pluck him off the board.

  14. Denver Broncos: Jonathan Cooper, G/C, North Carolina
The Broncos need an upgrade on the offensive line. Right guard Manuel Ramirez was not getting the job done for the suddenly injury-prone Chris Kuper, who has barely seen the field this year. Zane Beadles isn’t good on the other side either. Denver can easily find an upgrade this April.

  15. Houston Texans: Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
The Texans have needed a No. 2 receiver for years, but now that Andre Johnson is into his 30s, it won’t be long before they have to secure a new No. 1 wideout for Matt Schaub. Cordarrelle Patterson provides great value at the bottom of the first round.

There’s a chance that Patterson will be the first receiver chosen in the 2013 NFL Draft. He doesn’t have much experience, but he’s just so unbelievably talented.

Pick change; previously Justin Hunter, WR

  16. Atlanta Falcons: Alex Okafor, DE/OLB, Texas
The overpaid Ray Edwards was recently cut. Meanwhile, John Abraham will turn 35 a week after the 2013 NFL Draft. Defensive end will be a priority early in the 2013 NFL Draft, and the Falcons may even double dip at the position in the first few rounds.

Pick change; previously Tyler Eifert, TE
