2014 NFL Draft Re-Mock

This is a 2014 NFL Draft Re-Mock. I’m going back to 2014 and re-distributing all of the 2014 NFL Draft prospects to all of the teams in the 2014 NFL Draft order. This 2014 NFL Draft Re-Mock is based on how these players have performed in their careers, as well as the needs each team had back in 2014.

  1. Houston Texans: Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Jadeveon Clowney, DE/OLB
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Jadeveon Clowney, DE/OLB

The 2014 NFL Draft was far better than the 2013 NFL Draft. I had issues finding 32 players I wanted to put into the first round of my 2013 re-mock last year. The 2014 NFL Re-Mock Draft was different, as there were 46 players I considered to be worthy of the opening round. The 2014 NFL Draft didn’t have an elite quarterbacking talent, but there were several players who look like future Hall of Famers.

First and foremost, Aaron Donald. The Texans knew they were selecting Jadeveon Clowney months prior to the 2014 NFL Draft, but if they knew what we all know now, this selection would be Donald. There’s no question about it. Donald is the best player in the NFL at the moment. He can single-handedly change the outcome of a game, as he nearly broke Michael Strahan’s single-season sack record despite being an interior rusher. Can you imagine how lethal Houston’s defense would be with both Donald and J.J. Watt rushing the quarterback? Would opponents score any points on the Texans? 2. St. Louis Rams: Khalil Mack, DE/OLB, Buffalo
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Greg Robinson, OT
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Greg Robinson, OT

We reported prior to the 2014 NFL Draft that the Rams fell in love with Khalil Mack, but believed that they had to select Greg Robinson because of their huge need at left tackle. It just goes to show that you should always select the top prospect available who happens to make sense. The Rams probably would’ve been criticized by the bad opinion sports media for passing on an “elite” left tackle, but the Rams should’ve gone with their gut and chosen the prospect they were falling in love with.

  3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Blake Bortles, QB
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Sammy Watkins, WR

Speaking of reaching for bad players, the Jaguars selected Blake Bortles with this pick when they could have chosen Khalil Mack, Mike Evans, Aaron Donald or Taylor Lewan. Whoops!

Jadeveon Clowney is still on the board, but given that Jacksonville was so desperate for a quarterback, I’m going to re-mock Jimmy Garoppolo to them. Garoppolo hasn’t made many starts in the NFL, but the 49ers gave him a 5-year, $137.5 million contract. He has the potential of being a franchise signal-caller, unlike Bortles, who wasted his career by partying every night.

  4. Buffalo Bills: Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Sammy Watkins, WR
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Taylor Lewan, OT

The Bills traded up from No. 12 to 4 in order to select Sammy Watkins. Moving up wasn’t the mistake, but selecting Watkins certainly was. In doing so, the Bills passed on Khalil Mack, Mike Evans, Aaron Donald and Taylor Lewan.

I had the latter mocked to the Bills, so I’m going to stick with that selection. Lewan is my third-best player available behind Jadeveon Clowney and DeMarcus Lawrence, but with Mario Williams and Jerry Hughes on the roster, Buffalo wasn’t in the market for another defensive end.

  5. Oakland Raiders: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Khalil Mack, DE/OLB
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Khalil Mack, DE/OLB

The Raiders selected Khalil Mack with this pick, so it would make sense to mock one of the other elite pass rushers to them. The best one is Jadeveon Clowney, who falls from No. 1 overall in the real 2014 NFL Draft to No. 5 in the 2014 re-mock.

  6. Atlanta Falcons: DeMarcus Lawrence, DE/OLB, Boise State
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Jake Matthews, OT
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Jake Matthews, OT

The Falcons certainly don’t regret the Jake Matthews pick, as he has been a solid player for them over the years. However, they could have done better with this pick, so I’m going to slot a better player to them in this re-mock.

An elite edge rusher like DeMarcus Lawrence would have been the better choice in hindsight. The Falcons’ defensive ends heading into the 2014 NFL Draft were the mediocre Tyson Jackson and the aging Osi Umenyiora, so Lawrence would have satisfied a huge need.

  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Odell Beckham, WR, LSU
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Mike Evans, WR
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Johnny Manziel, QB

Mike Evans has posted some great numbers for the Buccaneers over the years, but let’s be real here: If Tampa Bay had a chance to do this over, its front office certainly would have opted for Odell Beckham Jr. over Evans. Both are very talented, but Beckham is the superior receiver.

  8. Cleveland Browns: Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Justin Gilbert, CB
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Mike Evans, WR

I mocked Mike Evans to the Browns. They needed a receiver, and he was seen as the top prospect at the position, save for Sammy Watkins. Evans certainly turned out to be better than Watkins, though not as good as Odell Beckham Jr. Still, Evans would be a terrific pick at this spot, as Baker Mayfield would currently have an exceptional receiver at his disposal.

  9. Minnesota Vikings: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Anthony Barr, LB
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Aaron Donald, DT

One of the several reasons I mocked Aaron Donald to the Vikings was because general manager Rick Spielman coyly asked, “who?” when someone brought up Aaron Donald to him in a pre-draft presser. Donald obviously would’ve been a much better pick than mediocre linebacker Anthony Barr, who excels versus the run, but has trouble in coverage.

Given the need for a defensive tackle, I can’t see the Vikings passing on Stephon Tuitt, who has been a tremendous player for the Steelers over the years.

  10. Detroit Lions: Zack Martin, G, Notre Dame
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Eric Ebron, TE
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Anthony Barr, LB

Neither Eric Ebron nor Anthony Barr would be in consideration for this pick. Ebron played well with the Colts in 2018, but was a colossal disappointment in Detroit, as he had a major penchant for dropping passes.

Zack Martin would have been a much better selection. Martin is the best guard in the NFL right now, and he would have filled a huge need for the Lions, who had a big hole in the interior at this moment in time (and still do.)

  11. Tennessee Titans: Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Taylor Lewan, OT
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Kony Ealy, DE

I projected a trade with the Titans and 49ers in my real 2014 NFL Mock Draft, which is why I had the Titans selecting Kony Ealy. Tennessee smartly stood at No. 11 and selected Taylor Lewan, who has developed into one of the best left tackles in the NFL.

Jake Matthews hasn’t been as good as Lewan, but he’s been a rock-solid left tackle for the Falcons over the years, so he would make sense as a pick here in this re-mock.

  12. New York Giants: Andrew Norwell, G, Ohio State
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Odell Beckham Jr., WR
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Zack Martin, G

“The Giants have to make sure Eli Manning is protected because this past season was a disaster.” I wrote this in my 2014 NFL Mock Draft, yet the Giants hadn’t done anything to improve their pass protection. In fact, five years later, their offensive line is still poor! With Odell Beckham Jr. off the board, the Giants could’ve taken precautions to improve their blocking. Andrew Norwell has been a stellar guard throughout his career, so he’d make sense here in this re-mock.

  13. St. Louis Rams: Kyle Fuller, CB/S, Virginia Tech
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Aaron Donald, DT
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Bradley Roby, CB

I mocked Bradley Roby to the Rams, but Kyle Fuller turned out to be the far better cornerback. The Rams had severe issues at cornerback during their Super Bowl run, so Fuller would have shored those up. Of course, the Rams wouldn’t have Aaron Donald after losing him to the Texans in this re-mock, so I doubt they would have been in the Super Bowl anyway.

  14. Chicago Bears: Telvin Smith, OLB, Florida State
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Kyle Fuller, CB
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Kyle Fuller, CB

The Bears missed out on Kyle Fuller by just one pick in this re-mock, but that’s OK because they would be in position to select another stellar defensive player.

Telvin Smith is an exceptional defensive player, and he would’ve been a great fit for the Bears. He would’ve filled a huge need, and he would’ve fit the system perfectly, as Chicago ran a 4-3 at the time.

  15. Pittsburgh Steelers: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Ryan Shazier, LB
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Justin Gilbert, CB

Had Ryan Shazier not suffered that horrible injury, he would have been a top-five pick in this re-mock. I probably would’ve slotted him fourth overall to the Bills. Unfortunately, disaster struck, and Shazier may never play again.

There aren’t many great options here who fill needs for the Steelers, so perhaps they would’ve opted for Brandin Cooks. Their only viable receiver at the time was Antonio Brown, so Cooks could’ve replaced Markus Wheaton as the second receiver.

  16. Dallas Cowboys: Lamarcus Joyner, S, Florida State
Actual 2014 NFL Draft Pick: Zack Martin, G
My 2014 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S

I foolishly mocked Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to the Cowboys in 2014, as I was ignorant to Jerry Jones’ aversion to Alabama players, given that he’s a proud Arkansas alumnus.

Lamarcus Joyner would fill that need, and he has been a better safety than Clinton-Dix anyway, so he makes the most sense in this spot.
