2015 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | Team Grades
-
San Francisco 49ers: Arik Armstead, DE/DT, Oregon: C Grade
Five-Year Grade: A Grade
Arik Armstead was a solid player for the 49ers prior to 2018. He exploded into a Pro Bowl-caliber performer in 2019, and his improved play was one of the many reasons the 49ers were able to reach the Super Bowl. Some of this improvement could be attributed to Nick Bosa’s presence, but this selection must be graded very favorably.
Original Write-up:
Blegh. The 49ers’ regression continues. I had Arik Armstead going to the 49ers in my 2015 NFL Mock Draft, but only because I heard that they liked him. I had Armstead slotted in the top half of the second round on numerous updates for a reason. He’s a highly athletic player, but he’s extremely raw, and definitely shouldn’t be a first-round pick based on production. He has tremendous upside and could develop into a strong starter, so I won’t give the 49ers a “D” or a “Millen,” but this does not project as a quality choice.

Kansas City Chiefs: Marcus Peters, CB, Washington: C+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: B Grade
Marcus Peters was a major character risk heading into the 2015 NFL Draft. The Chiefs took a chance on him, and he paid off the gamble. Sort of. Peters performed on a high level for a while, but Andy Reid quickly grew tired of his antics and got rid of him. Reid was at least able to salvage a second-round choice for Peters, who eventually went on to thrive in Baltimore.
Original Write-up:
Yikes, this could really backfire. Andy Reid visited Marcus Peters’ hometown during the draft preseason to do some undercover work on the talented cornerback. I guess he liked what he saw, as Reid is taking a big gamble on a player who quit on his team. Peters definitely has the talent, as he would’ve been a top-10 pick had he been clean off the field, but this is a big gamble in the top 20.
-
Cleveland Browns: Cameron Erving, C/G/OT: C- Grade
Five-Year Grade: F Grade
The Browns had a great center in Alex Mack, yet they drafted a center in Cameron Erving and then moved him to tackle. To no one’s surprise, this plan didn’t pan out very well. Cameron Erving was a huge bust for the Browns, and this decision was one of the many reasons they had a 1-31 stretch across two seasons. Erving is currently a mediocre backup in Kansas City.
Original Write-up:
Uhh… did the Browns forget that they have Alex Mack? Was this a byproduct of Ray Farmer’s suspension, or was Farmer too busy texting to remember that Mack was still on the roster? Cameron Erving projected as a solid center, but he won’t be able to play that position in Cleveland. So, where does he fit in? Right guard? Right tackle? Erving can start there, but those aren’t ideal spots for him. Perhaps Farmer should’ve actually drafted a real right tackle.
-
Philadelphia Eagles: Nelson Agholor, WR, USC: B- Grade
Five-Year Grade: D Grade
Nelson Agholor has proven to be great at one thing: Dropping game-winning passes at the end of regulation. Agholor has enjoyed a few bright moments with the Eagles, but has been a major disappointment for the most part.
Original Write-up:
Meh. Chip Kelly is familiar with Nelson Agholor, but perhaps he should begin scouting outside of the Pac-12. Agholor makes sense from a needs perspective, but this is a bit of a reach; I once had Agholor going to the Eagles at No. 20, but I ultimately slotted him in the second round. Agholor doesn’t have the athleticism Kelly loves, so this selection surprises me a bit. Agholor, however, is versatile and should help on offense next season.
-
Cincinnati Bengals: Cedric Ogbuehi, OT, Texas A&M: C+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: F Grade
One team laughed at this pick because they had Cedric Ogbuehi slotted in the third round. Ogbuehi hasn’t even lived up to a third-round billing. He flopped in Cincinnati and is currently a sub-par backup for the Jaguars.
Original Write-up:
This is a bit of a reach. Cedric Ogbuehi is coming off a torn ACL and wasn’t very highly regarded; at least that’s what teams we’ve spoken to told us. In fact, one franchise had him slotted in the third round, partly because of the injury. The good news is that Ogbuehi won’t have to play this year; he’ll take over at left tackle once Andrew Whitworth moves on. The bad news is that Ogbuehi won’t be able to contribute this year, and Cincinnati needs talented players to help Andy Dalton take the next step.
-
Pittsburgh Steelers: Alvin Dupree, DE/OLB, Kentucky: A+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: B Grade
Bud Dupree is a bit of a tough grade. He was a disappointment for most of his career prior to 2019. He failed to log more than six sacks in any season. However, Dupree finally exploded this past year, notching 11.5 sacks. It’s a bit concerning that this occurred in Dupree’s contract year, but perhaps he’s just a late bloomer.
Original Write-up:
Wow, how does this continue to happen? It seems like every year, great prospects slip in the draft and fall into Pittsburgh’s lap. I thought it was going to be Shane Ray or Randy Gregory, but it turned out to be another pass-rusher. Alvin Dupree was getting top-10 buzz prior to the draft. I thought that was a bit too high for him, but I figured the No. 13 spot was the right area for him. I thought the Saints would pick him when they were on the clock, but apparently not. Dupree has tremendous upside and should provide a big boost in terms of getting to the quarterback.
-
Denver Broncos: Shane Ray, DE/OLB, Missouri: B+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: F Grade
It was telling how bad Shane Ray is when the Ravens, a team starved for pass rushers in the wake of the Terrell Suggs and Za’Darius Smith departures, waived Ray prior to this past season. Ray worked out for some teams in an attempt to land a job, but no one wanted to sign him.
Original Write-up:
I stupidly dropped Shane Ray to the third round in the wake of his arrest, but I was told to slot him back into the first round. I ultimately had Ray going No. 22, so this is definitely the right range. Ray would’ve been a top-10 selection if it wasn’t for his off-the-field issues, so Denver is getting a potential steal. Ray won’t start right away, but he’ll provide quality depth behind Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware and ultimately take over for the latter once he retires.
-
Arizona Cardinals: D.J. Humphries, OT, Florida: B+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: C+ Grade
D.J. Humphries has played well when he’s been on the field for the Cardinals. The problem is that he’s frequently off the field. Humphries missed 18 of 32 possible games in 2017 and 2018. He finally managed to stay healthy in 2019, and he ended up having a solid year. This, however, was the first time he has played all 16 games in a season. It’s difficult to expect him to do it again.
Original Write-up:
I slotted D.J. Humphries to the Browns’ 19th-overall pick in my mock draft, so this is a slight bargain. I thought Arizona would take Eric Kendricks or a tall cornerback like Byron Jones, but Humphries makes sense as well. Right tackle Bobby Massie was the one responsible for Carson Palmer’s injury against the Rams, so Humphries should provide an upgrade at right tackle. The Cardinals need to do everything in their power to make sure Palmer is protected. They can’t have Bruce Arians debating between Ryan Lindley and Logan Thomas in a playoff matchup again.
-
Carolina Panthers: Shaq Thompson, LB/S, Washington: C+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: B+ Grade
Shaq Thompson proved to be a bit of a liability in Carolina’s new 3-4 defense in 2019, but he performed on a higher level in the 4-3 before that. I had Thompson slotted to the Panthers in the second round, but it turns out that they made the right move to select him at No. 25 overall.
Original Write-up:
I had Shaq Thompson to the Panthers – in the second round. I only had him falliing that far because it was apparent that they really liked him. In fact, I slotted Thompson to the Panthers at No. 25 a few weeks ago, but ultimately thought that was a bit too early for him. The teams we spoke to agreed, as they had him as a second-round prospect. Having said that, this is a fine pick, as Thompson’s versatility will definitely help Carolina’s defense. He’ll be able to play both safety and linebacker, depending on the situation.
-
Baltimore Ravens: Breshad Perriman, WR, Central Florida: B Grade
Five-Year Grade: F Grade
Breshad Perriman was a rare whiff for Ozzie Newsome. One of the best general managers in the NFL, Newsome thought he was getting a No. 1 receiver in Perriman, but the Central Florida product never caught more than 33 passes in a season for the Ravens. Perriman, however, finally emerged out of his cocoon late in 2019, but he was already on his third team by then, and Baltimore did not benefit from this at all.
Original Write-up:
The media was talking about Breshad Perriman going as high as No. 14 or 15, which I thought was crazy. Perriman, while very athletic, was way too raw to be chosen that early. This, however, is the right spot for him; in fact, I had Perriman going to Baltimore a week ago before changing the selection on Tuesday. The need for Perriman is obvious; with Torrey Smith gone, Joe Flacco needed a deep threat across from Steve Smith.
-
Dallas Cowboys: Byron Jones, CB, Connecticut: B+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: A+ Grade
The 2015 NFL Draft class had a dismal first round. I’ve given out many deserved “F” grades. Byron Jones, however, is an oasis in a desert of putrid draft selections. He’s been a spectacular player for the Cowboys, as he’s even been recognized as one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. This deserves a very clear A+ grade.
Original Write-up:
So much for the Cowboys picking Randy Gregory. Byron Jones makes a ton of sense. I had him going 20th overall to the Eagles, which I thought was a slight reach, so the 27th slot seems like the right area for him. He also fills a big need. Morris Claiborne has struggled, while Brandon Carr is overpaid. The Cowboys were desperate for corner help, and they landed an extremely athletic player as a probable upgrade.
-
Detroit Lions: Laken Tomlinson, G, Duke: B+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: C- Grade
It’s puzzling why Laken Tomlinson failed in Detroit and then went on to succeed in San Francisco. Tomlinson played horribly for the Lions and was considered a candidate for release after his second season. San Francisco smartly offered a fifth-round pick for Tomlinson, and that has paid off tremendously. Tomlinson started all 16 games for the 49ers in their Super Bowl-bound 2019 campaign.
Original Write-up:
This is a slight reach – I thought the right area for Laken Tomlinson was the top half of the second round – but that’s mitigated by the fact that the Lions moved down five spots and picked up some commodities in the process. That moves this grade from a “B” to a B+. I like Tomlinson as a prospect, as he projects as a solid guard. He fills a big need for the Lions, who struggled mightily to protect Matthew Stafford last year. Stafford has to love this pick.
-
Indianapolis Colts: Phillip Dorsett, WR, Miami: C+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: D+ Grade
Phillip Dorsett has been a major bust in the NFL, but the Colts were at least able to turn him into Jacoby Brissett by fleecing Bill Belichick in a trade, so that saves this decision from being yet another “F” grade.
Original Write-up:
How many receivers can you have? With T.Y. Hilton, Andre Johnson and Donte Moncrief on the roster, where will Phillip Dorsett fit in? The Colts should’ve nabbed an offensive lineman like Jake Fisher or a defensive back like Damarious Randall or Landon Collins. Dorsett is a fine prospect who fits the range, so I’m not exactly hating on this pick, but I just think the Colts should’ve gone in a different direction.
-
Green Bay Packers: Damarious Randall, S, Arizona State: B- Grade
Five-Year Grade: B Grade
Damarious Randall seems like a Pro Bowler when compared to some of these other 2015 first-round picks. Randall hasn’t been anything special throughout his career thus far, but he’s been a solid player for both the Packers and the Browns. I’d say this pick is worth a “B” grade.
Original Write-up:
Eric Kendricks and Denzel Perryman fell to the Packers’ lap… and they pass on both for a second-round safety? The Randall love didn’t make much sense to me – he’s athletic, but as Jon Gruden noted, he struggles to tackle. However, I had him pegged as an early second-rounder, so this isn’t a mega reach, or anything. I just think the Packers had better options at their disposal.
-
New Orleans Saints: Stephone Anthony, ILB, Clemson: B- Grade
Five-Year Grade: F Grade
The Saints selected Stephone Anthony over Eric Kendricks and paid the price. I had Anthony slotted in the second round, so this was seen as a slight reach at the time. It turned out to be an awful pick, as Anthony has bounced around the NFL lately.
Original Write-up:
Not Eric Kendricks? I had Stephone Anthony going to the Saints in the second round once upon a time, so I’d have to think this is a slight reach. However, there are some who believed that Anthony was the top inside linebacker in this class, so I’m not going to argue this too much. New Orleans obviously had a colossal need at inside linebacker because Curtis Lofton was terrible, so Anthony figures to be an upgrade.
-
New England Patriots: Malcom Brown, DT, Texas: A- Grade
Five-Year Grade: B- Grade
Malcom Brown has been solid, but an unspectacular player for the Patriots and Saints. He stuffs the run very well, but doesn’t produce much as a pass rusher. Defensive tackles like Brown should be drafted in the second round and beyond, but this is close enough. The Brown pick deserves to be graded in the B/B- range.
Original Write-up:
I’m not as crazy about Malcom Brown as the ESPN analysts are, but there’s no denying that he’s at least a slight steal at No. 32. He was projected to go as high as No. 23 to the Lions, yet he dropped to the Patriots. Bill Belichick won’t mind, as he’ll be able to use Brown as a replacement for Vince Wilfork, who left for Houston this offseason.
