Live 2013 NFL Draft Grades: Round 2

These Live 2013 NFL Draft Grades will be posted minutes after each pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2014 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | Team Grades
  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Johnathan Cyprien, S, Florida International: B Grade
This is a solid pick. Johnathan Cyprien was considered a first-round prospect by some. He fills a big need in Jacksonville’s defense, as the team’s current safeties are Dwight Lowery and Chris Prosinski. You have to wonder what they’re going to do a quarterback though. The fans are not going to be sold on Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne.

  2. Tennessee Titans: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee: A- Grade
I love this move, as Tennessee surrendered a 2014 third-rounder to move here. Justin Hunter should have been taken in the first round. He’s unbelievably athletic and has tremendous upside. The Titans had to find some weapons for Jake Locker because if he doesn’t succeed, the coaching staff and front office will be fired.

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford: B+ Grade
Chip Kelly loves his tight ends. He signed James Casey, but he needed another one because Brent Celek has been a huge disappointment recently. Zach Ertz is the top tight end available by far and No. 35 is the right range for him. Like the Jaguars though, you have to wonder what Philadelphia plans to do at quarterback.

  4. Detroit Lions: Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State: B- Grade
Darius Slay was projected to go in the first half of the second round, so the range of this pick makes sense. Cornerback was also a need, though not as great of a need as people think. Having said that, what Detroit plans on doing at left tackle is beyond me. Matthew Stafford probably won’t make it through the 2013 season.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina: B- Grade
We heard that the Bengals were going “all in” on Eddie Lacy, but Giovani Bernard makes more sense as a complement for BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Bernard is a speed back with return ability, which is exactly what Cincinnati needed. This is a slight reach – Bernard probably would have been around for Cincinnati’s second-rounder – but he’s a very good fit.

  6. San Diego Chargers: Manti Te’o, ILB, Notre Dame: C Grade
I’m not too crazy about this. The Chargers had other needs, but the main question is why they felt like they had to move up for Manti Te’o. Who was going to take him between Picks 38 and 45. I’d also be concerned about distractions destroying a weak locker room. Te’o is a very good player who should have been a first-rounder, but I don’t like this fit for him.

  7. New York Jets: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia: A Grade
This is the last place I’d want to go if I were Geno Smith because the Jets have absolutely nothing to work with on offense. But I imagine after waiting all Thursday evening, he’s just relieved to be drafted by someone. This is a great pick for New York though because Smith was considered an option for the No. 1 overall pick when he was winning games. The Jets needed a quarterback, and Smith was the top signal-caller in this entire draft class. It’s going to be fun watching Smith duel E.J. Manuel twice per year. I’m sure Smith will be extra motivated for that.

  8. San Francisco 49ers: Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State: A Grade
Outside linebacker was not a top need for the 49ers, but they have so few holes that they can afford to take the best player available. Tank Carradine was projected to go as high as No. 19, so that’s why this is a great pick. Teams can never have enough pass-rushers, and San Francisco appears set, even in the wake of injury. It’s worth noting that the 49ers can have Carradine play five-technique in their defense.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Robert Woods, WR, USC: B Grade
Buddy Nix said he was going after quarterback and receiver early in the 2013 NFL Draft, and he was true to his word. Robert Woods was arguably the top wideout available according to consensus rankings, though it is hard to trust USC receivers. Woods does project as an obvious upgrade though, so it’s difficult to hate this pick.

  10. Oakland Raiders: Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State: B+ Grade
The Raiders were going to draft Luke Joeckel if he fell to No. 3, so this makes a ton of sense. The Raiders have a huge hole at right tackle, and they need to worry about blocking Von Miller on that side. Menelik Watson could play there initially and eventually move to the blind side. He’s a project, but was expected to go at the end of the first round because of his great athleticism.

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State: A Grade
Think the Buccaneers shored up their secondary with Johnthan Banks and Darrelle Revis? Banks is a steal at No. 43. He was projected to go in the first round prior to running a 4.6 40 at the Combine. But as the Seahawks have proven, tall but slower corners can thrive in the NFL.

  12. Carolina Panthers: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue: B+ Grade
Back-to-back defensive tackles for the Panthers? Well, it makes sense considering how terrible they were at the position. Short’s range was around 28-45, so there is pretty solid value with this selection. The only concern I have here is that the Panthers don’t pick again until Round 4, and they have yet to address their woeful secondary.

  13. Arizona Cardinals: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU: B+ Grade
The Cardinals were starting Paris Lenon last year, so they absolutely had to find a complement for Daryl Washington. Kevin Minter was considered a fringe first-round prospect at one point, so Arizona is getting solid value for him in the middle of Round 2. He was not making it past Pittsburgh, so it’s good of the Cardinals to snag him off the board.

  14. Buffalo Bills: Kiko Alonso, ILB, Oregon: C- Grade
Kiko Alonso was not the top linebacker on the board (Arthur Brown, maybe even Jon Bostic). Even worse, he has glaring off-the-field issues, so the Bills will regret this pick if Alonso gets into trouble.

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State: D Grade
Jerruh sure loves his third-round prospects. Gavin Escobar belonged in the third frame. Even worse, he doesn’t fill a need. The Cowboys have so many defensive issues, especially considering that they’re moving into a new 4-3, that it’s a big head-scratcher that they haven’t addressed their stop unit yet.

  16. Pittsburgh Steelers: Le’Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State: C Grade
The Steelers needed a running back, so they’re filling a need. But Le’Veon Bell over Eddie Lacy? That’s a very questionable decision, especially considering the poor success of Big Ten backs over the years. Bell is more than a Big Ten plodder because he can block and catch the ball out of the backfield, but I wouldn’t have taken him this early.

  17. New York Giants: Johnathan Hankins, NT, Ohio State: B Grade
The Giants signed Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson in free agency, but they apparently wanted a larger body. Johnathan Hankins was once projected in the first round, but this is the right range for him. This is a decent choice that makes sense.

  18. Chicago Bears: Jon Bostic, ILB, Florida: B Grade
The Bears hope they’ve landed their successor for Brian Urlacher. Middle linebacker was a big need, and Jon Bostic is definitely worthy of being chosen 50th overall. I would have gone with Arthur Brown, but there must be major medical concerns with him because he has first-round talent.

  19. Washington Redskins: David Amerson, DB, N.C. State: C+ Grade
David Amerson had an outstanding 2011 campaign and was once considered a top-15 prospect. And then 2012 happened. Amerson was picked on quite often. He probably should have been chosen in the third round, but he does fill a big need, regardless of whether Washington plans on using him at corner or safety.

  20. New England Patriots: Jamie Collins, DE/OLB, Southern Miss: B Grade
Defensive end wasn’t a primary need for the Patriots, but it’s definitely a position that could have been improved. Jamie Collins is a fierce pass-rusher who had 10 sacks in 2012, though level of competition is an issue. He was projected as a mid-second-round prospect, so this is the right range for him.

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Margus Hunt, DE, SMU: C Grade
The Bengals are definitely in favor of drafting the best player available regardless of need because Margus Hunt doesn’t fill a need at all. The Bengals are pretty set at defensive end with Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins. Hunt is very raw and will have to spend a couple of years developing. I’m not a fan of drafting such a project in the second round.

  22. Miami Dolphins: Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State: A Grade
I’m not sure why the Dolphins didn’t trade this pick or what in the world they plan on doing at left tackle, but Jamar Taylor is a great pick from both a value and needs standpoint. Miami had a hole at cornerback and filled it nicely with Taylor, who was considered a first-round prospect by some.

  23. San Francisco 49ers: Vance McDonald, TE, Rice: B Grade
This would have been a pretty solid pick had San Francisco not moved up. The 49ers lost Delanie Walker, so they needed an in-line tight end. Vance McDonald is a good fit and makes sense in this range. I feel like San Francisco could have stayed put and still obtained him, however. (Update: San Francisco gave up just a seventh-rounder).

  24. Baltimore Ravens: Arthur Brown, ILB, Kansas State: A+ Grade
This is the best pick of the second round. Arthur Brown may have been chose in the 20 range had he been completely healthy. He’ll heal up, and Ozzie Newsome will end up with another draft-day steal. Brown is as best of a successor to Ray Lewis as Baltimore could have obtained in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  25. Houston Texans: D.J. Swearinger, S, South Carolina: B+ Grade
The Texans wanted a safety who can play both the free and strong positions, and D.J. Swearinger definitely qualifies for that. He’ll fill a big need vacated by Glover Quin’s departure to Detroit. Swearinger was seen as a late-second-round prospect, so this is the right range for him.

  26. Denver Broncos: Montee Ball, RB, Wisconsin: C Grade
This is too early for Montee Ball. He’s a Big Ten plodder with tons of wear and tear on his body already. He fills a need, but the Broncos should have waited until later to pick a running back if they were just willing to settle for Ball.

  27. New England Patriots: Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall: C Grade
If New England’s history of drafting receivers is any indication, Aaron Dobson will be a bust. The Patriots have taken so many terrible wideouts in the NFL Draft. Aaron Dobson looked good in the Senior Bowl, but this is a slight reach, as he could have gone a round later.

  28. Atlanta Falcons: Robert Alford, CB, Southeastern Louisiana: A Grade
There was a report a few weeks ago that Robert Alford wouldn’t make it past the 42nd pick. Well, he did, and the Falcons have to be thrilled. Alford, who provides solid value, really helps fortify the cornerback position along with Desmond Trufant. Atlanta’s former greatest weakness now has to be considered a strength.

  29. Green Bay Packers: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama: A+ Grade
Ted Thompson makes this looks so easy. Not only did he sit and wait for the top running back in the 2013 NFL Draft; he also moved down and still managed to maintain him. Eddie Lacy would have been a first-round pick if it weren’t for an injury that he’ll quickly recover from. He’ll be a tremendous upgrade in the backfield.

  30. Seattle Seahawks: Christine Michael, RB, Texas A&M: C Grade
I’m all for picking the top player available – it’s questionable if Christine Michael qualifies as such – but it has to make some sort of sense. The Seahawks already had Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin in the backfield. Where does Michael fit in? This seems like a wasted selection.
