Reader 2015 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 1-16

  1. San Diego Chargers: Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin
    Melvin Gordon: 37.3%
    Ereck Flowers: 16.5%
    Malcom Brown: 12.4%
    Andrus Peat: 11.5%
    Alvin Dupree: 11.3%
    Jalen Collins: 3.4%
    Jaelen Strong: 2.5%
    D.J. Humphries: 2.3%
    Breshad Perriman: 1.8%
    Marcus Peters: 1.1%
    Total votes: 443

Duncan F: I have Erick Flowers at the top rated OT on the board. It’s clear that the Chargers need some serious help on their offensive line, and to get a guy like that, with this pick, would be amazing. Especially considering how deep and talented this draft class is for the RB and EDGE pass-rushing position. They could easily pick up a starting OLB or defensive end in round 2 and a starting RB in round 3. But lets face facts….that running back isn’t going anywhere if his offensive line is terrible like the Chargers were last year.

Chucky W: The Chargers need a r.b. and Gordon so happens to be the best player available.

Strunk F: The Chargers still have major problems generating a respectable pass rush. Ingram is a monster but has problems staying healthy. Attachou was a rookie last year who also spent a good part of the season nursing various injuries. The Chargers lost Jarret Johnson to retirement and decided to part ways with the geriatric Dwight Freeney. LB is a big need and Bud is probably the best player on the board at this point. The team can still target a RB in the later rounds.

David H: Flowers could be a good fit and the team cannot reload enough on the offensive line. Dupree could be tremendous with the right coaching. Marcus Peters would be BPA here if you can handle the flags, and CB depth is needed because there’s not a lot beyond Brandon Flowers and the glass-shouldered Jason Verrett (who in any case would be one of the best slot corners in the NFL). Brown would also be tempting because there’s not enough 3-4 linemen to go around. Just don’t let it be Gordon. I like him, sure, but this RB class is loaded and a day 2 guy would suffice.

Michael C: If someone is gonna take a RB in first round – it’s San Diego for sure. OT Peat is also an interesting option for them at this point, but they can adress that need in second round.

Thomas B: True Charger fans know that we don’t need a RB in round 1 when they could get one just as good in round 2 or 3. The Chargers do need a pass rush but they also need to stop the run and with selecting DT Brown from Texas you accomplish both. Brown is big enough to demand a double team which will give our LB holes to get to the QB faster which will also make our secondary better with hurried throws. This pick makes so much sense that Telesco should run to the podium.

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State
    Jaelen Strong: 21.9%
    Ereck Flowers: 15.9%
    Dorial Green-Beckham: 14.6%
    Andrus Peat: 12.5%
    Breshad Perriman: 11.3%
    Landon Collins: 8.8%
    Alvin Dupree: 4.3%
    D.J. Humphries: 3.5%
    Malcom Brown: 2.9%
    Jalen Collins: 2.3%
    Marcus Peters: 2.3%
    Total votes: 521

Mads K: Green-Beckham makes a lot of sense here. Kansas City al and go from zero touchdowns from wr’s to Maclin and DGB. Which lookslike a dangerous duo.

Chucky W: Andy Reid loves drafting big, powerful offensive linemen in the first. flowers would start immediatly at right tackle and push Fisher for the left tackle spot next year.

David H: If anyone is desperate enough to roll the dice on Dorial Josh-Gordon in the first, surely it’s the team that became the first since the “three yards and a cloud of dust” era to complete zero touchdowns to wide receivers in a season? The Chiefs seem prepared to take chances on guys with flags, too, and the other two WRs on here are a guy who drops far too many short passes for this offense (Strong) and an Al Davis special (Perriman).

Bryon E: Ereck Flowers is the smart pick. You can’t teach 6’6″ 329 lbs and 38 reps on the bench with arms like an orangutan. Smith needs protected to have any chance and the heart and soul of the team is Jamaal. And this is Andy Reid.

  3. Cleveland Browns: Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami
    Ereck Flowers: 23.1%
    Breshad Perriman: 19.9%
    Alvin Dupree: 18.5%
    Dorial Green-Beckham: 13.6%
    Malcom Brown: 10.8%
    Andrus Peat: 6.2%
    Landon Collins: 3.8%
    D.J. Humphries: 2.8%
    Eddie Goldman: 1.4%
    Total votes: 502

Thomas P: There’s a better chance I hit the lottery than predict what Ray Farmer will do.

Alex H: If I’m the Browns, I’m calling for offers to trade down. It would be a major mistake for the Browns to take an OT here. DGB has major red flags and Perriman is a work in progress that the Browns can’t wait on. I’d honestly offer the pick to NE for their 1 and either a 2 or 3, so they can get DGB. If I can’t move down, Dupree has to be the pick. Mingo isn’t developing as hoped and there’s nobody behind him. Pass rusher is essential to Pettine’s defense so I expect it to be addressed early.

  4. Philadelphia Eagles: Landon Collins, S, Alabama
    Landon Collins: 22.6%
    Jalen Collins: 12.6%
    Nelson Agholor: 11.8%
    Jake Fisher: 11.3%
    Breshad Perriman: 9.5%
    Marcus Peters: 9.2%
    Alvin Dupree: 8.7%
    Byron Jones: 8.0%
    Dorial Green-Beckham: 4.4%
    Owa Odighizuwa: 2.1%
    Total votes: 390

David H: As there was exactly one Duck on the list I basically had to pick him here. I’d not be the least bit surprised by anything Chip does at this point though. He makes the NFL so much more interesting.

Bryon E: Chip is not so quietly building Oregon East. He has his top CB on the trading block so he could go DB and pick top of board. My money is on the guy who looks like, walks like, and quacks. He’s a duck!

Tom F: Eagles need a new receiver. Lets see if he fits Kellys M.O: Pac 12? Yes. Fast? Yes. Good Size? Yes. Is it definite if his game will translate well to the NFL? Maybe. Welcome to the Eagles Nelson!

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Alvin Dupree, DE/OLB, Kentucky
    Alvin Dupree: 29.6%
    Malcom Brown: 22.2%
    Andrus Peat: 19.6%
    Dorial Green-Beckham: 7.7%
    Marcus Peters: 5.8%
    D.J. Humphries: 5.5%
    Breshad Perriman: 3.9%
    Eddie Goldman: 3.9%
    Owa Odighizuwa: 2.1%
    Eli Harold: 1.9%
    Total votes: 313

David H: Peters and DGB are firmly in the conversation because Marvin Lewis loves taking a chance on players who’ve fallen because of character flags; if Randy Gregory slides in the real draft then this is where that slide ends, but in this mock he still went top-10 so that’s irrelevant. I also think DJ Humphries is a superb fit here because the Bengals have a big long-term need at left tackle but have the time (and the coaching) to get someone with untapped potential. I voted Peters but there’s multiple options, and I’d anticipate any of them working out (at least in the regular season) at a well-run team like the Bengals.

Aaron L: I don’t think Dupree is a great fit for the Bengals, but he wouldn’t be too bad. I chose Peat to play OT for the Bengals, which is a need for them. Dupree and Malcom Brown are also good value

  6. Pittsburgh Steelers: Marcus Peters, CB, Washington
    Marcus Peters: 33.3%
    Jalen Collins: 23.7%
    Kevin Johnson: 15.3%
    Malcom Brown: 11.2%
    Byron Jones: 5.9%
    Eli Harold: 4.7%
    Owa Odighizuwa: 2.5%
    Jordan Phillips: 1.6%
    Breshad Perriman: 0.9%
    Ronald Darby: 0.9%
    Total votes: 323

David H: The Steelers probably trust that they can handle Peters despite his flags – it’s a strong locker room there. Also, if they don’t, Baltimore probably willl, and both of those AFC North teams have a clear weakness at corner. This is a banned Jimmy Graham celebration of a pick.

Jim M: If I was the Steelers GM and the board played out like this I would take Kevin Johnson. He seems like a safe pick while addressing a pressing need and you cannot go wrong there. However first of all, Kevin Colbert stresses the front 7 much more than the back four. Second, Colbert likes to choose value over need. With that said, in this scenario, I think the Steelers front office would opt to take the value in Malcolm Brown over more pressing needs

Bryon E: The four CB’s are pretty much all the same player. It’s a crap shoot. Steelers will roll the dice on whoever they have at top of their list.

  7. Detroit Lions: Malcom Brown, DE/DT, Texas
    Malcom Brown: 59.5%
    Andrus Peat: 12.1%
    Eddie Goldman: 7.8%
    D.J. Humphries: 7.0%
    Jalen Collins: 5.5%
    Kevin Johnson: 3.5%
    Jake Fisher: 2.7%
    Breshad Perriman: 1.6%
    Ronald Darby: 0.4%
    Total votes: 257

Bryon E: Your choices don’t include a RB which is interesting. Half the mocks I read have Lions taking Gordon. I agree with you the Bell/Riddick combo allows for alternate choices at the top of the draft. Voters favor Brown in a big way in this poll. Great choice. CB and OT are also in the mix. I think the Lions go Peat and go DT in second with Bennett, this years version of Aaron Donald, from OSU.

Jake: Which came first? The chicken (offensive lineman), or the egg (running back). Lions offensive line is the weakest part of their team. They’ll take Peat.

Aaron L: I think this is an easy pick for the Lions if Shelton or Brown fall here.

Jeff D: I agree that Malcom Brown is the best choice here as a top-15 talent at an area of obvious need. However, I don’t think the idea of taking Perriman is as crazy as the voters seem to think it is. It is very odd that teams like the Redskins, Jets, and Giants are being talked up as candidates for using a 1st round pick on a 3rd receiver, yet the idea of Detroit doing the same is not even mentioned. Detroit runs more of a passing offense than any of those teams. They have finally found their number 2 in Golden Tate, but last year proved just how damaging an injury to one of those two can be as the depth behind them is scary bad. That was not remedied in free agency. If someone like Strong, Perriman or Agholor is available at this spot and the highest on their board, I think they consider taking them. Overwhelm defenses with good receivers and running lanes get bigger.

  8. Arizona Cardinals: Arik Armstead, DE/DT, Oregon
    Arik Armstead: 32.4%
    Jalen Collins: 22.1%
    Eli Harold: 14.4%
    Kevin Johnson: 8.6%
    Eddie Goldman: 8.1%
    Owa Odighizuwa: 7.2%
    Byron Jones: 5.0%
    Ronald Darby: 2.3%
    Breshad Perriman: 1.6%
    Total votes: 224

David H: 3-4 ends are relatively scarce commodities, and teams running a 3-4 need two of them, so good ones need to be taken early. Armstead has the potential – albeit far from proven, but the Cards are well-coached on D – to be rather more than just good.

Joseph T: I don’t like Armstead here, the Cards have 6 solid guys on the roster at 34 DE. Owa is the best pick here as they love bigger OLBs.

Josh: CB2 is not as big of a need for the Cardinals as most people think, especially with how deep the CB class is this draft and having Powers and Bethel as in-house options. I doubt they go there in the 1st unless one is head and shoulders BPA over the next prospect on their board. Given the choices available, I feel like getting an OLB in Harold or NT in Goldman would be the best option as both would contribute immensely to shoring up the front seven. Cameron Erving, C, Florida State, should have been an option on this poll over one of the CBs. Steve Keim has been building up the OLine ever since he became GM (signing Veldheer and Iupati, drafting Cooper) and it wouldn’t surprise me if the Cardinals used their 1st pick on the top Center to shore up their weakest link, given the current uncertainty at the position.

  9. Carolina Panthers: Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford
    Andrus Peat: 50.1%
    D.J. Humphries: 20.4%
    Breshad Perriman: 9.0%
    Jalen Collins: 4.9%
    Dorial Green-Beckham: 4.9%
    Nelson Agholor: 4.5%
    Jake Fisher: 3.4%
    Phillip Dorsett: 2.6%
    Total votes: 266

Bryon E: With Peat leading the voting here I suggest the voters are not paying attention. First like you commented in your NotDraft today, which was excellent, the Panthers have made several additions so they would nt be locked in to picking a tackle. Peat probably won’t be there and Cam needs weapons. Go with NFL bloodlines in Perriman.

David H: Such was the WR crisis facing the Panthers last year that people forgot there was nobody to protect Cam Newton on the blind side. Had he not rebounded in December, the Panthers could’ve been picking at 5, not 25. Fortunately, Andrus Peat – who might be the only starter-ready LT in the entire draft class – has somehow fallen to 25 here. The Panthers could justify trading up for him, and certainly couldn’t justify any other pick here.

  10. Baltimore Ravens: Breshad Perriman, WR, Central Florida
    Breshad Perriman: 33.1%
    Kevin Johnson: 14.3%
    Jalen Collins: 13.6%
    Dorial Green-Beckham: 11.4%
    Eddie Goldman: 5.5%
    Jordan Phillips: 5.2%
    Phillip Dorsett: 4.8%
    Nelson Agholor: 4.0%
    Eli Harold: 2.9%
    Byron Jones: 2.6%
    Ronald Darby: 1.5%
    Owa Odighizuwa: 1.1%
    Total votes: 272

Bryon E: QB has biggest arm in football and his only WR is old enough to be the father of some of these guys on your list. Don’t think OZ will take Goldman as the memory of Terrance Cody is too fresh. Gurly not listed could be the guy but won’t last. Take the speed, size, bloodlines and no baggage. Perrriman it is.

David H: Ngata is going to be tough to replace – blame the Flacco deal – so Jordan Phillips has to be in play at this point. There’ll be opportunities on Friday night to provide another addition to Flacco’s bomb squad. Corner is another possibility. However, I suspect what will actually happen is some top-15 talent will fall to 26 and Ozzie Newsome will draft him.

Joey Y: The ghost of Al Davis will ensure that someone will pull the trigger on Breshad Perriman late in the first. Personally, I wouldn’t touch him in the first as he feels like a project with a fair amount of injuries in his past – but someone will pull the trigger. Why not Baltimore, where the receiving corps is represented by Steve Smith’s AARP card and some kids swooped up from the Parking Garages Valet service.

  11. Dallas Cowboys: Jalen Collins, CB, LSU
    Jalen Collins: 23.5%
    Eddie Goldman: 20.3%
    Kevin Johnson: 20.0%
    Byron Jones: 14.1%
    Owa Odighizuwa: 9.0%
    Eli Harold: 7.6%
    Damarious Randall: 3.1%
    Ronald Darby: 2.4%
    Total votes: 290

Joey Y: The Cowboys secondary needs help, Jerry Jones has wanted another corner for years. He’ll take the top rated corner on his board, who I think will be Byron Jones, a fast riser with Jerry’s name sake (he’s always had an affinity for those, see Felix). But since Jerry Jones can’t evaluate talent, it could be a third round prospect like Steve Nelson. Travis Frederick anybody?

Aaron L: The Cowboys’ biggest need on defense is D-line, so I picked Goldman here. I think a CB could be had in the 2nd or 3rd round if desired.

Dro: Not a big fan of the way this vote could go, as the many quality CB options could cannibalize themselves and let a DL option win it. If this were rank voting (choose your top three options), the available DL options wouldn’t even come close. I suggest choosing the CB who gets the most votes.

Whom (among the options) do I think Dallas will take? Kevin Johnson
Whom do I think Dallas SHOULD take? Byron Jones
Whom should Dallas not touch with a ten foot pole? Jalen Collins (enough of LSU, thank you very much)

  12. Denver Broncos: Cameron Erving, OT/G/C, Florida State
    Cameron Erving: 45.3%
    D.J. Humphries: 16.0%
    Eddie Goldman: 12.7%
    Jake Fisher: 9.5%
    Owa Odighizuwa: 4.4%
    Jordan Phillips: 4.4%
    Eli Harold: 3.6%
    Kevin Johnson: 2.1%
    Damarious Randall: 2.1%
    Total votes: 339

Bryon E: Gary Kubiak is laying awake at night scheming how to us Fisher in his zone blocking scheme. Job #1 keep Manning protected.

Jeff D: Clearly Erving is going to win this in a landslide, so I’ll argue against it. I certainly think he is a first round talent and may be BPA in this situation, but I don’t think he makes sense for the Broncos. My problem with Erving here is that the rationale for him going to Broncos pretty much everywhere (including here) is that they need to replace Orlando Franklin and improve the interior of their line. With that impressive looking C/G/OT, it’s natural to think of Erving as a replacement for Franklin – a guard who doubled as a backup tackle (and a pretty good one). The problem is that Erving spent most of his career as a tackle, before issues in pass protection prompted a move inside to center, where he thrived doing what he does best – run blocking. The “OT” may as well be removed from his positional options. If he couldn’t handle speed rushers in the college game, it’ll never happen in the pros. So now they are drafting a run blocking Center, still getting used to a newish position, and switching him again to guard? Or would they move Manny Ramirez (at age 32) to guard where he hasn’t played in years? In any case, it’s hard to see this resulting in improved protection for Peyton. A more appropriate pick would be Laken Tomlinson, who is a true guard coming out of college known more for his pass protection than run blocking.

Jimmy P: No way it’ll be Erving: 1) He won’t be available for Denver (check Charlie’s draft, ESPN, or Drafttek; they know he’ll be gone by pick 18). 2) Isn’t ROT Denver’s bigger need? (The “OT” included for Erving is an historical reference; he’ll play center in the NFL). 3) Chris Myers is still a free agent, soon to be reunited with Kubiak. 4) Has the value they had from Pot-roast, Rahim Moore, and Orlando Franklin been truly replaced? Will Montgomery is much easier player to replace than any of those cats (Montgomery is really best served as a back-up). 5) Erving is ranked about 40 in most big boards. Only teams desperate for a center would reach that far (but someone will and before Denver is on the clock).

Brian H: If these were the available players on the board, I feel they would go for Erving quickly. Center is the Broncos # 1 need. That doesn’t mean they need one in the 1st round of course, but it is their #1 need for a reason. Manny Ramirez who is a career backup guard finished the season as the starting center and the results showed. Ramirez is good enough to stay as depth at guard and that is it. They have a All Pro at Left Tackle, a very good right guard, and very little else. They addressed left guard somewhat in free agency and addressed right tackle in the 3rd round last year and then never played him. The GM stated that the rookies at right tackle and center drafted last year would be given every chance to win jobs this year. Trouble is they drafted the center in the 6th round and he never saw any real action. Erving also has versatility so if that 6th round draft choice ends up great, they could slide him elsewhere on the line.

  13. Indianapolis Colts: D.J. Humphries, OT/G, Florida
    D.J. Humphries: 29.5%
    Eddie Goldman: 22.9%
    Kevin Johnson: 12.0%
    Jordan Phillips: 8.9%
    Eli Harold: 8.5%
    Owa Odighizuwa: 7.0%
    Byron Jones: 5.4%
    Damarious Randall: 4.3%
    Randall Darby: 1.6%
    Total votes: 258

Bryon E: For the next 5 years the colts first pick should be best OL available. Only an injury to Luck will keep them from winning several SB’s during the next 15 years. The rest of the league should be “Very Afraid”.

David H: This is Luck’s last cheap year and the veterans they’ve picked up for it (Gore, Johnson) suggests they see this as a win-now year. So they’ll take someone who can be an instant contributor. Not sure who that is, but I doubt that means a corner or an OT (unless the latter starts on the inside). It might mean an edge rusher, so Harold or Odighizuwa are genuine possibilities, but I voted Phillips on positional scarcity and value. I could also see a trade up, especially if Kendricks gets into the 20s – I predicted the Saints moving up last year and this feels like a similar situation.

Wesley C: Jordan Phillips has to be the pick if he’s available. Improving the NT position will help keep Jonas Gray and LeGarette Blount for running for 400+ combined yards in 2 games again. Pretty much every other position (except C) has been taken care of for the short term

  14. Green Bay Packers: Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest
    Kevin Johnson: 23.7%
    Benardrick McKinney: 14.5%
    Marcus Peters*: 14.0%
    Stephone Anthony: 12.2%
    Jordan Phillips: 8.9%
    Byron Jones: 8.0%
    Denzel Perryman: 7.2%
    Eddie Goldman: 7.0%
    Damarious Randall: 5.7%
    Eli Harold: 3.5%
    Owa Odighizuwa: 3.0%
    Damarious Randall: 1.3%
    Total votes: 401

Tom F: Packers are a team that values Character, so Peters and McKiney are out. Corner isn’t as pressing a need as many are making it out to be, as Micah Hyde can be a corner with Ha Ha Clinton Dix taking over as a full time safety. They don’t need an edge rusher in the first round, but they do need a long term Nose Tackle. Jordan Phillips may have the highest upside of all the DT’s in this draft. Raji has lost all motivation and Guion has issues, so Phillips makes sense. Eric Kendricks would be the pick is he was available.

Matthew L: Lets hope the Lions take care of business and draft Humphries and move Reiff to LG where he belongs in the first round. Add a CB in teh second and rotational or dimaond in the rough DT in the third maybe a SS. RB in the fifth.

Bryon E: Throw a dart at anyone on the list as BPA will be Ted Thompson pick. Wisdom has MLB a priority, but my $ is Shaq,

  15. New Orleans Saints: Maxx Williams, TE, Minnesota
    Maxx Williams: 21.2%
    Phillip Dorsett: 15.2%
    Marcus Peters*: 14.3%
    Nelson Agholor: 14.3%
    Dorial Green-Beckham: 10.6%
    Byron Jones: 8.8%
    Eddie Goldman: 6.9%
    Benardrick McKinney: 3.7%
    Stephone Anthony: 3.7%
    Denzel Perryman: 1.4%
    Total votes: 218

David H: Peters would be an almighty tempter this late, but I’m going Dorsett. The Saints seem to have acquired the ghost of Al Davis, trading up for Cooks and now cooing over Perriman and Dorsett. If I’m GM, I’d go Byron Jones – or maybe Goldman.

Matthew L: This is the 2nd time you’ve messed up by putting Peters in the vote (picked 22nd to Steelers). It didn’t really skew last vote because all his votes would have likely went to Kevin Johnson (or at least most of them). Having him here will mess up this vote.

Jeff D: I suspect the Saints will take a receiver at 13 in the real draft, but since they haven’t here, this pick is guaranteed to be a pass catcher. I picked Agholor. His skill set would complement Brandin Cooks perfectly as a smooth route runner good at bringing down contested passes. That said, I don’t think him being around at 31 is realistic. Tight Ends always get drafted a little higher than they should, so I could see Williams being the pick here, but Dorsett is certainly an option as well. As above, erroneously including Peters is really starting to skew these results.

  16. New England Patriots:

Vote for whom you think the Patriots will take No. 32 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft and post in the comment board below. If the voting is a landslide, I may end the voting early and post the next pick. Follow @walterfootball to stay updated.
