Stanford vs. Michigan State.
Line: Stanford by 6.5.
Wednesday, Jan. 1, 5:00 p.m.
As a disclaimer, don’t go nuts with my college football picks. I’m much better at picking NFL games (at least I used to be). Follow @walterfootball for updates.
I don’t know who decided that Michigan State has the No. 1 defense in the country, but that seems a bit ridiculous. It’s clearly a byproduct of the Spartans feasting on crap Big Ten offenses. The Pac-12 is a far superior conference, so I expect Stanford to win by at least a touchdown. The sharps are all over the Cardinal, though they’ve bet it up from -3.5, so we don’t have as much value remaining with them.
College Football Pick: Stanford -6.5 (1 Unit) — Incorrect; -$110
Oklahoma vs. Alabama.
Line: Alabama by 16.5.
Thursday, Jan. 2, 8:30 p.m.
Alabama is a much better team than Oklahoma. That part’s obvious. What gives the Tide the big edge in this game is Nick Saban’s ability to prepare for the Sooners for an entire month. If you give Saban that much time, forget about it. Just lay the points.
College Football Pick: Alabama -16.5 (1 Unit) — Incorrect; -$110
Houston vs. Vanderbilt.
Line: Vanderbilt by 2.5.
Saturday, Jan. 4, 1:00 p.m.
The sharps are on Houston. Perhaps they like the Cougars because Vanderbilt is missing its starting quarterback. Perhaps they question the Commodores’ motivation for getting up for a team from a minor conference this late in the bowl season. Regardless, it seems like Houston is the right side.
College Football Pick: Houston +2.5 (1 Unit) — Incorrect; -$110
Arkansas State vs. Ball State.
Line: Ball State by 9.
Sunday, Jan. 5, 9:00 p.m.
I’ve made my thoughts on the MAC well known. The conference is a joke, and its sole purpose is for people with special interests to make money on its useless weekday games. The sharps have dropped this spread from +9 to +7.5 or +8 despite public action on Ball State, though it’s still available for +9 on Bovada.
College Football Pick: Arkansas State +9 (2 Units) — Correct; +$200
Florida State vs. Auburn.
Line: Florida State by 8.
Monday, Jan. 6, 8:30 p.m.
It’s a shame that the two best teams in the country aren’t playing in the national championship. If the voters had functional brains and cared about the integrity of college football, they would’ve had Florida State and Alabama as the top squads in their polls, but the system is broken, unfortunately. Auburn is a quality team, but it’s gotten lucky on so many occasions this year. The Tigers have had about a month off, so they won’t be nearly as hot, and it’s highly unlikely that their lucky streak will continue. Long rest favors the superior team, and that would be Florida State by a wide margin. Oh, and the sharps are on the Seminoles. This should be an ugly blowout.
FINAL THOUGHTS: I’ve been asked throughout the day if I still like Florida State at -10.5 or -11, which is what the spread is at most of the books. I still do, but for two units instead of three. If you can get -10 or lower, I’d go with three units. The sharps have pounded this spread up, while the public is all over Auburn. However, there’s just not as much value at -10.5 or greater.
Go Seminoles. Follow me @walterfootball to see if anything changes.
