Last update: Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Next update: TBA.

The order of this mock has been decided by my 2008 NFL Power Rankings: Post-Draft. Click here for Round 2 and here for Round 3.
  1. Atlanta Falcons: Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss
If you’re curious to see how my 2008 NFL Mock Draft fared, you can see how many correct every single mock had in my 2008 NFL Mock Draft Results page.

The Falcons traded up too high and reached for Sam Baker, a move I think they’ll regret. But even if Baker turns out to be a solid pro, I can’t see Atlanta passing on Michael Oher, the top prospect in the 2009 class. Atlanta needed two upgrades at offensive tackle going into the 2008 NFL Draft, so it’ll get its second one here.

  2. Miami Dolphins: Michael Johnson, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
I could be wrong, but like the Falcons, I have a feeling Miami will regret its draft choice. Jason Taylor’s as good as gone and Joey Porter is one of the most overrated players in the NFL. It’ll become very apparent that the Dolphins need to address the defensive end position. Luckily, they’ll be able to land Michael Johnson at this spot.

  3. San Francisco 49ers: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
Tim Tebow’s an option if the 49ers are drafting this high (meaning Alex Smith sucked big time again), but I doubt the 49ers are willing to risk their chances on another Urban Meyer quarterback. Besides, this class could have six first-round-caliber signal callers, so San Francisco might be able to land one atop Round 2.

Enter Michael Crabtree. Isaac Bruce doesn’t have much left in the tank, while Bryant Johnson has never really shown the ability to be a No. 1 receiver in this league. Michael Crabtree, the best player available here, will satisfy a huge need for San Francisco.

  4. Kansas City Chiefs: Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
The Chiefs added a ton of young talent to their team in the 2008 Draft. One position they failed to address, however, was the quarterback position. If they have the fourth pick in the draft, Brodie Croyle must not have shown them much.

People love to hate on Tim Tebow. I don’t know if it’s because Florida fans salivate over his athleticism, or the average male salivates over the girl in the photo next to him on the front page of this Web site.

Look, I have no idea how great or terrible Tebow’s going to be at the next level. But the fact remains that he’s the top quarterback prospect in this draft class. Think about it this way – Tebow has more mobility, greater size and a bigger arm than Alex Smith, who was chosen first overall in 2005. Smith, like Tebow, came out of Urban Meyer’s spread offense. If Smith can be chosen first, I think it’s foolish to believe Tebow can’t go in the top five, assuming he doesn’t get hurt next year.

Make sure you check out the Great Tim Tebow Debate. You can even vote on where you think he’ll be drafted.

  5. St. Louis Rams: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
It’s been widely publicized that the Rams were ready to pounce on Jake Long if he slipped past the Dolphins. That’s understandable, as the injury-ridden Orlando Pace will turn 34 during the early stages of the 2009 season, while Alex Barron is as inconsistent as they come. St. Louis makes up for that and takes the top tackle on the board.

  6. Detroit Lions: George Selvie, DE, South Florida
Speaking of missed opportunities, the Lions were reportedly targeting Derrick Harvey at No. 15. Dewayne White managed just six sacks in 2007, and if he flops again, Detroit just may cut its losses and exterminate his contract three years too early. George Selvie could be an effective replacement.

  7. Oakland Raiders: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
The Raiders have a lot of needs, but one hole they can definitely shore up at this position is left defensive end. They have nothing across from Derrick Burgess, and a dynamic defensive lineman like Tyson Jackson can help an anemic pass rush that mustered only 27 sacks in 2007.

  8. Baltimore Ravens: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
Chris McAlister will be 31 prior to the commencement of the 2008 season, and who knows if Samari Rolle can stay healthy for a change? Trading for Fabian Washington wasn’t enough; the Ravens need a No. 1 corner for the future.

  9. Chicago Bears: Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia
The Bears seemed to solidify most of their weaknesses on offense in the 2008 Draft – all but the most important position, that is. I doubt Rex Grossman makes any sort of major improvement this season, so chances are Chicago will be looking for a franchise signal caller come next April.

  10. Denver Broncos: James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State
It looks like the Broncos are moving D.J. Williams outside and starting Niko Koutouvides at middle linebacker. Yeah, good luck with all that. I’m going to go out on a limb and state that Mike Shanahan realizes he needs an upgrade at this position by Week 2.

  11. New York Jets: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State
Thomas Jones will be celebrating his 31st birthday a month before the 2009 season begins. Even so, I don’t think the Jets can afford to pass up on someone as physically gifted as Chris Wells.

  12. Cincinnati Bengals: Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC
So, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the Odell Thurman experiment will not work out in Cincinnati. With Thurman gone, the Bengals’ middle linebacker is Dhani Jones, who probably wouldn’t even be in the league if it weren’t for Marvin Lewis’ inept defense.

Pick change; previously Knowshon Moreno, RB

  13. Arizona Cardinals: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
I had the Cardinals taking Rashard Mendenhall in my 2008 NFL Mock Draft, but I can’t fault them for passing up on him in favor of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. However, the fact is Arizona will need a long-term solution at running back because, as Emmitt Smith would say, “The Ed are gettin’ a little long in the mouth.”

Pick change; previously LeSean McCoy, RB

  14. Philadelphia Eagles: Ciron Black, OT, LSU
It’s been reported that if the Eagles weren’t offered a blockbuster trade from the Panthers – which allowed them to steal this selection, by the way – Andy Reid would have chosen Jeff Otah. Big Red grabs his left tackle of the future here instead.

  15. Washington Redskins: Fili Moala, DT, USC
Something tells me the Redskins will desperately be looking for upgrades on their defensive line in the 2009 Draft. Defensive end is more of a need right now, but I have to believe Cornelius Griffin will be a cap casualty after this season. A dominant tackle will be needed right next to Anthony Montgomery, and Fili Moala is too good to pass up on at this juncture.

Pick change; previously Rey Maualuga, ILB

  16. Tennessee Titans: Sen’Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn
The Titans need a receiver, but they apparently think Eric Moulds, Brandon Jones and Mike Williams can make the Pro Bowl. So, I’ll leave them to their delusions and have them address another position. We all saw what happened when Albert Haynesworth missed time during the 2007 season. The Titans really need help at defensive tackle.

Pick change; previously Fili Moala, DT

  17. Houston Texans: Taylor Mays, SS, USC
Basically the Best Player Available formula for a team hurting for defense. It's not like strong safety isn't a need, anyway. Taylor Mays is an amazing athlete who, despite weighing 225 pounds, runs a 4.4 40.

  18. Minnesota Vikings: Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma
The Vikings only have two glaring weaknesses on their team, and they happen to be quarterback and right tackle. With John David Booty in the mix, I'd have to think that Minnesota would be more inclined to snag a monstrous right tackle off the board as an instant upgrade over Marcus Johnson and Ryan Cook.

  19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
I really have no idea why the Buccaneers didn't address the wide receiver position this offseason. I guess their front office wasn't paying attention when their offense was bogged down in their playoff loss to the Giants. Dexter Jackson was acquired in the second round, but he's more of a kick returner than anything. Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard aren't going to be around much longer.

Pick change; previously Cullen Harper, QB

  20. Buffalo Bills: Greg Hardy, DE, Ole Miss
I can't imagine the Chris Kelsay-Ryan Denney experiment lasting much longer. The Bills need another pass rusher to complement Aaron Schobel. Managing only 26 sacks a year isn't going to cut it.

  21. Philadelphia Eagles: Myron Rolle, SS/FS, Florida State
The Eagles really need help at both safety positions; Brian Dawkins doesn't have much left in the tank, Quintin Mikell is the epitome of mediocre and mentioning Sean Considine's name solicits groans from Philadelphians. Myron Rolle, who can play both free and strong safety, will be a huge upgrade in the Eagles' secondary.

  22. Seattle Seahawks: Duke Robinson, G, Oklahoma
The Seahawks weren't able to land Branden Albert, although they probably could have traded up for him if they wanted to. They've desperately needed help at guard ever since Steve Hutchinson bolted for Minnesota. Seattle won't hesitate if Duke Robinson falls into its lap.

  23. Pittsburgh Steelers: Max Unger, OT, Oregon
Some much-needed help for an anemic line that surrendered six sacks against the Jaguars. And that was with Alan Faneca. Ben Roethlisberger should just take the 2008 season off because Pittsburgh pretty much failed to upgrade its offensive front.

  24. Cleveland Browns: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
Cleveland had an incredible offseason, which is why I was really puzzled when the team didn't acquire an upgrade at cornerback in the 2008 NFL Draft. Unless I'm missing something, Phil Savage should make that position his top priority in the 2009 Draft.

  25. New Orleans Saints: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC
I had the Saints taking center Alex Mack here, but they won't be able to pass up on Brian Cushing if he's available. Cushing's versatility to play multiple linebacker positions will really help the Saints. William Moore is also a possibility, but New Orleans is in a bind at outside linebacker in the wake of Dan Morgan's retirement (not that I thought he was going to make the team anyway).

  26. Dallas Cowboys: Darry Beckwith, ILB, LSU
Just a hunch, but I don't think Zach Thomas is going to be too effective this year, outside of a locker-room leadership role. I think the Cowboys made a huge mistake trading away Akin Ayodele.

  27. Green Bay Packers: William Moore, FS/SS, Missouri
If there's one thing we learned about Packers GM Ted Thompson, it's that he loves to take the best player available, no matter what position he plays. William Moore can play both free and strong safety, and should be a huge asset to Green Bay's talented but thin secondary.

  28. Indianapolis Colts: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
I'm not sure what's going on with Marvin Harrison right now, but the gun situation aside, Harrison turns 36 this August. Indianapolis will need to start adding more talent to the receiver position as soon as possible.

Pick change; previously Percy Harvin, WR

  29. New England Patriots: Kam Chancellor, SS, Virginia Tech
A successor for Rodney Harrison and help for a suddenly extremely thin secondary.

  30. San Diego Chargers: Alex Boone, OT, Ohio State
I'm not sure why Chargers GM A.J. Smith failed to address the right tackle position in the draft. Maybe he has some trick up his sleeve. He usually does. But everyone's wrong sometimes. Maybe this is one of those rare instances.

  31. Jacksonville Jaguars: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
I like David Garrard, which is why it hurts me to see him paired with slacker Jerry Porter, and complete busts like Troy Williamson, Matt Jones and Reggie Williams. It really doesn't get much worse than that.

Pick change; previously Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR

  32. New York Giants: Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
There were rumors abound that the Giants were going to trade Jeremy Shockey during the draft. That didn't happen, but that doesn't mean that a deal won't go down later in the year or during the 2009 NFL Draft. If Shockey goes, New York will need someone to complement Kevin Boss.

Pick change; previously Patrick Chung, SS
