2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** THIS IS A LIVE 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT. PICKS ARE BEING POSTED NOW. TO SEE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, CHECK OUT THE ARCHIVED 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT SECTION. FOLLOW @walterfootball FOR UPDATES ***

  1. Houston Texans: James Hurst, OT, North Carolina
As mentioned earlier, teams that spend early picks on quarterbacks often double up on offense. If the Texans decide to do that, they could certainly upgrade the right tackle position, which is a big problem area for them.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Washington Redskins: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The Redskins need help all over their defensive, including up front. They’re getting no push from their defensive line.

  3. Cleveland Browns: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
The Browns have a great front seven, but the one liability in the group is Craig Robertson, who has been abused in coverage this season.

  4. Oakland Raiders: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
The Raiders need multiple upgrades on their offensive line. Lucas Nix might be the worst starting guard in the NFL, so he needs to be replaced.

Pick change; previously Cyril Richardson, G

  5. Atlanta Falcons: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor
The Falcons have some major issues on the offensive line. Everyone wants to look at left tackle, but the guard position is an area that must be upgraded as well.

Pick change; previously Anthony Johnson, DT

  6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Buccaneers continue to bolster their pass rush. Even if they add Khalil Mack, they’ll need to add a defensive end and a defensive tackle to help them get to the quarterback.

  7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
General manager David Caldwell doesn’t seem to be a fan of talented quarterbacks, but he could be forced into taking a potential franchise signal-caller at some point – unless, of course, he still believes that he needs to build around Blaine Gabbert.

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Lamarcus Joyner, S, Florida State
The Vikings desperately need help in their secondary, including an upgrade next to Harrison Smith.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
The Bills were expected to address the cornerback position in the 2013 NFL Draft, but never got around to it. They probably won’t avoid that area two years in a row.

Pick change; previously Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB

  10. New York Giants: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU
Linval Joseph is an impending free agent, so the Giants will have to find some help at defensive tackle if he leaves.

Pick change; previously Kelcy Quarles, DT

  11. Tennessee Titans: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
There have been reports indicating that Chris Johnson will be cut this offseason. If that’s the case, Tennessee will obviously be searching for a new lead running back.

  12. Pittsburgh Steelers: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
The Steelers will be searching for a new receiver. They need a new deep threat after Mike Wallace took the money and ran to Miami.

Pick change; previously Aaron Colvin, CB

  13. New York Jets: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
Geno Smith has looked like the worst quarterback in the NFL on many occasions this season – even worse than Brandon Weeden and Jeff Tuel – but it’s not like he has much of a chance with his horrific receiving corps. Santonio Holmes can’t stay healthy, while Stephen Hill is a bust.

  14. St. Louis Rams: Craig Loston, S, LSU
St. Louis’ defense has come on lately, but it has struggled at times this season for a couple of reasons. One is the play of safety Rodney McLeod. He hasn’t been terrible, but it’s clear that the Rams need to find an upgrade next to T.J. McDonald.

Pick change; previously Aaron Donald, DT

  15. Detroit Lions: Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
Dominic Raiola has seemingly been on Detroit’s roster forever, but he’ll be a 35-year-old free agent in March. The Lions will probably bring in a new center.

  16. Green Bay Packers: A.J. Johnson, ILB, Tennessee
The Packers released Desmond Bishop in the offseason. On top of that, the rapidly aging A.J. Hawk will have an expiring contract soon. Ted Thompson will have to address the inside linebacker position in the near future.

  17. Baltimore Ravens: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
It should be quite apparent that the Ravens desperately need help at receiver. Neither Jacoby Jones nor Marlon Brown should be a No. 2 wideout in the NFL. Think Joe Flacco misses Anquan Boldin?

  18. San Diego Chargers: Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB, Alabama
The Chargers were so desperate for help at rush linebacker that they signed Dwight Freeney. The former Colt is obviously not a long-term solution for the team’s pass-rushing woes.

Pick change; previously Jason Verrett, CB

  19. Dallas Cowboys: David Yankey, G/OT, Stanford
The Cowboys are so desperate at guard that they lured Brian Waters out of semi-retirement. Waters was then knocked out for the year. So much for that.

Pick change; previously Christian Jones, LB

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
The Cardinals, who typically go with the top player on their board, will almost definitely be interested in someone like Jeremiah Attaouchu, as they really need an upgrade at outside linebacker across from Sam Acho.

  21. Miami Dolphins: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
The Dolphins don’t trust Lamar Miller at all, while Daniel Thomas isn’t very good. They’ll likely be searching for a new starting running back this spring.

Pick change; previously Marcus Roberson, CB

  22. Chicago Bears: A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama
It’s looking more and more like the Bears will allow Jay Cutler to escape this offseason. If that happens, they’ll obviously be searching for a quarterback in the spring.

  23. Philadelphia Eagles: Dion Bailey, S, USC
Philadelphia’s defense is terrible for many reasons, one of which is the safety position. Nate Allen is garbage, while Patrick Chung can’t stay healthy.

Pick change; previously Craig Loston, S

  24. Indianapolis Colts: Ed Stinson, DE/DT, Alabama
I mocked Datone Jones to the Colts for a while in the 2013 NFL Draft because they need a pass-rushing presence up front. That’s still a hole they have to fill, as we learned by watching Indianapolis fail to pressure Carson Palmer about a month ago.

  25. New Orleans Saints: Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
The Saints don’t value offensive tackles enough to take one in the first round, but perhaps they’ll search for an upgrade at the position on Day 2. Drew Brees had very little time to throw in a loss at Carolina.

  26. Cincinnati Bengals: Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas
The Bengals drafted Margus Hunt, but they have Michael Johnson hitting free agency soon. With Carlos Dunlap recently extended, it’s very unlikely that Johnson will be retained.

  27. San Francisco 49ers: Odell Beckham, WR, LSU
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers will need a new receiver to complement Michael Crabtree.

  28. San Francisco 49ers: Dominique Easley, DE, Florida
The 49ers will need a successor for Justin Smith (Tank Carradine, maybe?) and also some depth on the defensive line. With four Day 2 selections, they can take a chance on someone like Dominique Easley, a tremendous talent who is coming off a terrible injury.

  29. Carolina Panthers: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
Cam Newton has made huge improvements this year, but he could still really benefit from a potent, pass-catching weapon coming out of the backfield.

Pick change; previously Ka’Deem Crey, RB

  30. New England Patriots: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

  31. Denver Broncos: Christian Jones, LB, Florida State
Wesley Woodyard has looked out of place trying to play middle linebacker. Paris Lenon is a disaster. This is an area Denver may want to upgrade.

Pick change; previously Ben Gardner, DE

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Zack Martin, G/OT, Notre Dame
The Seahawks, who can afford to go with the best player available, have multiple areas of concern on their offensive line, including both guard spots. Imagine how potent Russell Wilson would be with upgraded protection.

Pick change; previously David Yankey, G/OT
