2014 NFL Trade Mock: Picks 1-16

  1. Baltimore Ravens: Marqise Lee , WR , USC
The Ravens will probably take a receiver if both safeties are off the board. I actually had the Eagles trading up here initially for Brandin Cooks, but decided against it since both teams would still be taking receivers.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Cleveland Browns: Zack Martin , OG / OT , Notre Dame
    *** Trade 6: Cleveland trades a 2014 third-round pick for the No. 18 overall selection and a fifth-round pick. ***

The rumor is that the Browns want to draft a right tackle so they can move Mitchell Schwartz inside. Many assume this will happen at No. 4 with Greg Robinson, but what if Cleveland makes that move with its second selection? It’ll have to trade up and get ahead of the Dolphins to land Zack Martin.

  3. New Orleans Saints: Kony Ealy , DE , Missouri
    *** Trade 7: New Orleans trades a 2014 third-round pick and 2014 fifth-round pick for the No. 19 overall selection. ***

With Zack Martin gone, the Dolphins can move down. A reasonable trade partner would be the Saints, who would have to get ahead of the Cardinals (or Cowboys in this mock) to obtain Kony Ealy, who would really help out the pass rush.

  4. Dallas Cowboys: Johnny Manziel , QB , Texas A&M
I can almost hear the ESPN presidents splooging all over their desks. The “Worldwide Leader” would be able to talk about Manziel, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys for a decade straight, non-stop. ESPN wouldn’t even mention anything other than Manziel and Dallas in that span. It would be so terrible that it almost has to happen, right?

Anyway, Manziel isn’t out of the question for the Cowboys. They’d consider him, especially if they trade down. Not much else made sense.

The Cowboys would use their newly acquired third-round pick on a defensive lineman of some sort, I’d imagine.

  5. Green Bay Packers: C.J. Mosley , OLB / ILB , Alabama
The first boring pick of the second page. Again, I apologize, but I can’t have 32 trades in this mock.

  6. Philadelphia Eagles: Brandin Cooks , WR , Oregon State
As mentioned earlier, I thought about having the Eagles trade up for Brandin Cooks, but they might be able to obtain him at No. 22. As Cooks told the media, he wouldn’t be replacing DeSean Jackson; he’d be upgrading him.

  7. Carolina Panthers: Odell Beckham , WR , LSU
    *** Trade 8: Carolina trades a 2015 third-round pick for the No. 23 overall selection. ***

The Panthers have tons of holes and not enough selections to fill them, but giving up a 2015 third-round choice isn’t too bad, especially if they’re able to nab the last of the consensus tier-two receivers in the 2014 NFL Draft.

  8. Cincinnati Bengals: Bradley Roby , CB , Ohio State
Hell will freeze over before Mike Brown makes a move up in the NFL Draft, so if you’re a Bengal fan looking for your team to do something in a Trade Mock, you don’t know your owner very well.

  9. Washington Redskins: Kyle Fuller , CB , Virginia Tech
    *** Trade 9: Washington trades a 2015 third-round pick for the No. 25 overall selection. ***

The Redskins want to move into the back end of Round 1, and this is essentially the same point difference on the trade chart as the Carolina-Kansas City deal.

Someone who makes sense for Washington at No. 25 would be Kyle Fuller, who would presumably be a starting cornerback for the team in 2015 and beyond.

  10. New York Jets: Kelvin Benjamin , WR , Florida State
Can you imagine how pissed Rex Ryan would be if he missed out on yet another coveted cornerback? Poor Rex will probably be fired by the end of the 2014 season anyway – I have them selecting first in my 2015 NFL Mock Draft – so it doesn’t matter anyway.

If Kyle Fuller is off the board, New York would take a receiver or a tight end. It would then use its new third-rounder on a corner. Hopefully.

  11. Miami Dolphins: Xavier Su’a-Filo , OG , UCLA
The Dolphins missed out on Zack Martin, but Xavier Su’a-Filo would make sense for them as well, assuming they’re able to trade down into the mid- or late-20s. Perhaps they’d use their new third-round choice on a long-term answer at running back.

  12. Houston Texans: Teddy Bridgewater , QB , Louisville
    *** Trade 10: Houston trades a 2014 fifth-round pick and 2014 sixth-round pick for the No. 33 overall selection. ***

This would have seemed insane about six months ago, but many believe that Teddy Bridgewater will fall to the second round. Well, he comes close to doing so in my trades mock, but I’m sure some team would want to jump in front of the Texans to grab him. Perhaps Houston itself would pull the trigger.

  13. New England Patriots: RaShede Hageman , DT , Minnesota
Bill Belichick is infamous for trading in the NFL Draft, but he stays put in this instance and selects a player who fits his defensive scheme perfectly.

  14. Tennessee Titans: Dee Ford , OLB / DE , Auburn
I’m sure Tennessee fans will be disappointed that their team waited this long to draft, but the Titans can get a promising pass-rusher for the new 3-4, plus two second-round picks, which is huge. Some options in Round 2 include a running back to succeed Chris Johnson (Jeremy Hill), a left tackle of the future (Morgan Moses) and a cornerback to replace Alterraun Verner (Marcus Roberson).

  15. Denver Broncos: Ryan Shazier , OLB , Ohio State
I couldn’t find a good trade scenario for the Broncos, and I’m at 10 deals anyway, so I’ll just keep what I have in my 2014 NFL Mock Draft.

  16. Seattle Seahawks: Joel Bitonio , OT , Nevada
    Ditto for the Seahawks.

  17. Kansas City Chiefs: David Yankey , OG / OT , Stanford
I said it in my real mock: Kansas City’s goal is to trade down and acquire one of the guards. In doing so, the Chiefs managed to pick up a pair of Day 3 selections as well as a third-round pick in 2015. I’d say that’s pretty good considering that Kansas City might just take David Yankey at No. 23 overall anyway.

  18. San Diego Chargers: Louis Nix , DT , Notre Dame
Louis Nix fills a huge need for the Chargers, but it’s more likely he’ll end up being in the early second-round range. Getting a 2015 third-rounder for someone San Diego could just take with the 25th-overall pick is a solid move.
