Jerks of the Week: Star Trek Picard

Many of you may not know this, but I’m a big Star Trek fan. It all started when I was 12 years old. It was a rainy, Saturday afternoon, and I was hanging out with my best friend Josh in my parents’ den. There was nothing interesting on TV, so I kept flipping channels randomly. I briefly saw something that looked like Star Trek, and I was eager to move to the next channel when Josh stopped me.

Josh: Let’s watch Star Trek: The Next Generation!

Me: Ugh. No.

Josh: It’s awesome, just give it a shot.

Me: No thanks! I’m not a nerd!

I totally was a nerd back then who was scared to say a single word to a girl, but I was in denial. I don’t know whom I was trying to fool.

Josh: My uncle was one of the writers on the show. Trust me, it’s good.

Me: I don’t know, man. Spock and Yoda are for geeks.

Josh: Yoda? Whatever, just watch one episode. If you don’t like it, I’ll never ask you to watch it again.

Me: Ugh. Fine.

For reference, this was the season-seven episode where Data has dreams and eats a cake version of Counselor Troi. I couldn’t believe it, but I absolutely loved it. Josh and I watched another episode after that – UPN used to air the show back-to-back – and I was hooked. Soon enough, I had watched every single episode. Josh and I even went to a Star Trek convention one weekend when we were in eighth grade. I bought some Star Trek books I never would end up reading and got a poster signed by Counselor Troi herself.

Marina Sirtis, the actress who played Counselor Troi, was a beautiful woman, so Josh and I dared each other to strike a conversation with her, as if we had any sort of chance. I already established that I couldn’t talk to girls, so I chickened out. Josh did the same. Oddly enough, Josh’s twin sister Jackie engaged in a 10-minute conversation with Sirtis in the autograph line. To this day, I have no idea what the two talked about, but it looked like a very interesting discussion.

Nevertheless, I still have the autographed poster. It’s hanging on my basement wall:



I’ve wanted every cast member to autograph this, but I’ve been lazy about it. Nevertheless, once I get everyone’s autograph, I will set boobytraps around the poster so that anyone who tries to steal it will suffer a horrible death.

At any rate, now that I’ve established that I’m a big Star Trek fan, you might guess that I was excited for the new show, Star Trek Picard. And that was the case, at least initially.

You may not have heard this, but the actor who plays Captain Picard, Sir Patrick Stewart, declared that the new show would be a “response” to Brexit and President Donald Trump. I hate when politics mix with shows and movies, so I was suddenly disgusted that Star Trek Picard would be inundated with social-justice warrior nonsense. Even still, I was willing to give the show a chance until I learned that it would only be available on CBS All-Access, yet another streaming service. I already have Netflix, Amazon TV, Hulu and Canada Ploos, so I wasn’t willing to spend more for something I was reluctant to watch anyway.

The first couple of episodes aired, and Josh, whom I’m still best friends with – he was the best man at my wedding – asked if I watched the show. I told him about my trepidation about the show being SJW nonsense and my inability to tune in for free. He responded by sharing his account information for CBS All-Access and begged me to give Star Trek Picard a shot. Amazingly, it was 25 years later, and we were having the same conversation. And like last time, he convinced me to watch it. I thanked him for the login information and eventually watched the first five episodes.

Like last time, I gave it a shot with an open mind. Unfortunately, the results were not the same, as I quickly discovered that Star Trek Picard is a heaping pile of garbage.




I honestly don’t know where to begin. Perhaps the positives would be a start. Sir Patrick Stewart’s acting is still top notch. There are neat callbacks to the original show. There are also android twin sisters who are pretty hot. And umm… that’s about it.

The show is horrible otherwise. Josh claimed that there wasn’t any SJW nonsense in the show, but he was wrong. Through five episodes, the entire show has been Picard, a 90-year-old man, being berated by strong and powerful women at every turn. Seriously, each episode features a segment where a strong and powerful woman is yelling at Picard. This once-heralded man, who was captain of the flagship of the United Federation of Planets, has been reduced to a pathetic doormat, and it’s upsetting.

Meanwhile, there are obvious moments where the writers made their feelings known about what they falsely perceive to be injustices. For example, there’s a scene in the second episode where a group of white Starfleet officers make fun of an android. They scoff at his skin, which they are disgusted by because it’s brown. Yes, there are people in the 2390s who are racist against brown-skinned androids, as if brown-skinned androids are worse than white-skinned androids like Commander Data.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, the Federation is made out to look like the villain in the very first episode because they wouldn’t evacuate Romulan refugees. Picard wanted to save the refugees, but Starfleet wouldn’t let him, so he quit Starfleet. Many of the refugees died when the Romulan sun went nova – a ridiculous concept I’ll touch on later – but some of the refugees were re-located to a desert planet where they were forced to live in squalor. Replication technology exists in the 2300s in the Star Trek universe, yet these Romulan refugees barely have any supplies. I’m not sure how that’s supposed to work, but whatever.

The SJW nonsense is insufferable, and yet it’s the least-bad thing about Star Trek Picard. I could deal with the show if its only blemish was the inclusion of SJW nonsense. Unfortunately, there are so many other things that make Star Trek Picard unbearable to watch.




I suppose the worst thing about Star Trek Picard is that it’s boring. It’s just very boring. I’ve always said that a benchmark for a great show is when you find yourself looking at the clock, hoping that there’s plenty of time remaining. I found myself doing this with Lost and the first six seasons of Game of Thrones. The latter show aired at 9 p.m. on Sundays, and I constantly found myself glancing at the time. When I’d see something around 9:45, I’d swear under my breath, aware that the episode was nearing its end. I knew I’d hear the credit music any second, and I loathed it. I wanted extra time more than anything else in the world.

And yet, I discovered that the opposite was true of Star Trek Picard. I found myself frequently checking the timer, but for the opposite reason. I’d see that there were 15 minutes remaining in the episode, and I’d think, “Ugh, I still have 15 more minutes of this? Why can’t it be five minutes?”

Star Trek Picard failed miserably to engross me like the Troi cake episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation did for many reasons. I’d have to say the most prevalent reason is that none of the characters are engaging. When discussing the show with Josh afterward, I asked him the following question:

“Honestly though, do you care about any of the non-Picard character arcs?”

Here was Josh’s response:

“Umm… do any of the other characters have arcs?”

Excluding Picard, whom I referred to as a pathetic doormat, all of the other characters are empty vessels. None are interesting, and they all seem to lack any sort of motivation. I couldn’t tell you what any of the non-Picard characters would like to accomplish. They’re just given throw-away lines to fill the time.

The characters are all stereotypes, too. There’s the cool ship captain who is a maverick because he drinks alcohol and has a cool beard. There’s the groovy gal who is awesome because she vapes even though it’s the 24th century. There’s the quirky girl who is clumsy for no reason. There’s the silent man who is put into odd situations because he is very socially awkward. All of these characters interact with each other with whimsical lines, almost as if they’ve known each other forever even though they just barely met.

The worst of these characters is a woman named Raffi. She’s the groovy gal who vapes. She also calls Picard “JL” even though she served under him in Starfleet. There’s one episode in Star Trek: The Next Generation where two characters are invisible and inaudible because of a transporter malfunction, and yet even though Picard can’t hear them, they say, “Excuse me, sir,” to him out of respect. That was one of the most memorable moments of the show to me because it emphasized how heralded Picard was. Everyone, save for the ship’s doctor, who was his childhood friend, called him “Captain.” Not even calling him “Jean-Luc” was allowed. Yet, this Raffi idiot had the audacity to abbreviate Jean-Luc to just “JL.” It was emblematic of the destruction of the Picard character, which, as I described earlier, is yelled at by strong and powerful women at every turn.

Raffi is repulsive for other reasons. She makes snide comments to Picard and is unpleasant. If she’s not complaining about something, she’s rude to virtually everyone. It’d be one thing if the writers did this intentionally for the audience to hate her, but they didn’t. They wanted her to be quirky, especially with the vaping and the “JL” nonsense. She tags along with Picard and the crew on the third episode as they leave Earth. A surprised Picard asks why she’s coming with them, and I was begging for her not to answer because I didn’t care. She replied, “I’m not telling you,” and I was thrilled. It was the best moment of the show because I didn’t want t know anything about Raffi’s story arc.

As it turns out, Raffi joined Picard because her son and grandchild happen to be on the planet in which Picard is traveling. She’s estranged from her son because she’s an alcoholic and drug addict, and that’s it. She had a 5-minute scene with her son that was so boring I wanted to drill a hole through my head.

I’m not kidding when I say this, but I think Raffi is the worst character in TV history. I brainstormed other possible candidates, and the only ones I could conjure up were Randy from That 70s Show and Nikki and Paulo from Lost. However, Nikki and Paulo had just one episode, while Randy was carried by some of the other cast members. There’s no one to carry Raffi. She’s just miserable.




In addition to the characters, the writing is horrible. I mentioned the stupid, quirky lines between characters who barely know each other, but it’s worse than that. There’s just so much that makes no sense. Here’s a list of things I can recall:

In the fourth episode, Picard travels to a Romulan refugee planet camp even though he’s in a rush to save an android girl’s life. His goal in this Romulan refugee planet camp is to recruit a Romulan samurai who can protect him on this mission. He manages to succeed in this task, as a 20-year-old proficient swordsman agrees to join Picard.

This would make sense if, you know, people didn’t use phasers and disruptors in the 24th century! How useful can a samurai be against projectile weapons that fire beams of light and never run out of ammunition? Seriously, it’s as if the writers took an idea for a show set in the 1700s and just used it on Star Trek Picard for no reason.

The Romulan samurai was supposed to be put to good use in Episode 5, where there was a standoff between an antagonist who was holding a doctor hostage for reasons that were unclear. However, the Romulan samurai just stood there and did nothing during the gunfight while some of the strong and brave women took charge and saved the day.

There were other action scenes, which I didn’t particularly enjoy. The best part of Star Trek: The Next Generation was all of the philosophical dilemmas the crew encountered throughout their journey. This show has none of that. Instead, it’s all cheesy action scenes that are very unrealistic. In the third episode, for example, Picard is attacked at his home by eight or so Romulan assassins. The only people there to help Picard were his Romulan cook and Romulan maid. Despite being outmatched and outnumbered, a 90-year-old man, a cook and a maid were able to defeat the Romulan assassins without suffering any casualties. Based on Picard’s success in this scene, one has to wonder why Picard even needed a Romulan samurai to aid him.

Speaking of the Romulans, they were forced to evacuate their planet because their sun was going nova. I mentioned this already, but I didn’t discuss how stupid this concept is. Scientists, as of this time in our history, can tell when a sun is progressing toward going nova. This is a process that takes a very long time. How in the world did the Romulans not know that their sun was going nova? This is something they should have been prepared for. And why did the Romulan Star Empire need help from the Federation to evacuate Romulus? Couldn’t they have done it themselves? Romulans are an equal adversary to humans and their allies in the show’s lore, so I don’t understand why they would’ve been so incompetent when it came toward saving their people.

It’s obvious that very little thought was put into the overall writing of the script. The phrasing is stupid. Characters have said things like, “you’re killing it,” and Raffi’s son refers to his Romulan wife as “baby.” In one episode, Picard signals to Raffi on his communicator and says, “Don’t hang up,” as if he’s calling her on the phone.

Why would people be saying “you’re killing it” and “don’t hang up” in the year 2390? We don’t even use phrases from the 1950s and 1960s. No one goes around saying stuff like, “bee’s knees” or “outta sight.” And yet, that was just 60-70 years ago. There’s no way people would be saying stuff like “you’re killing it” at the end of the 24th century!

This show is just frustrating for all of those reasons. More than anything, this doesn’t even feel like Star Trek. Call me crazy, but maybe it’s because they’re not really trekking the stars. They spent the first three episodes on Earth, then the entire fourth episode took place on the Romulan refugee camp planet. They should have just called this show, Picard.

It’s all very upsetting. When Star Trek Picard was announced, I was thrilled. Yet, CBS blew an opportunity to have a great reunion show by hiring shoddy writers who have failed miserably at creating interesting characters and generating logical story arcs. I’d say I’ve never been more disappointed by something on TV, but then again, we just had the seventh and eighth seasons of Game of Thrones.

I guess there is one silver lining in all of this, and it’s that I didn’t have to pay to watch it. Thanks, Josh!
