2011 NFL Mock Draft

Last update: Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 - Third edition
Next update: TBA.

This is obviously way too early for a 2011 NFL Mock Draft. But it's always fun to speculate what could happen in the future. I used the same order as the 2010 NFL Draft, and took only my projected 2010 NFL Draft first-round picks into account when making these selections. Click here for my 2010 NFL Mock Draft.

  1. St. Louis Rams: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Jimmy Clausen, QB

If I had to rank the three receivers right now, it would be A.J. Green, Michael Floyd and Julio Jones (drops plagued his 2009 season). However, if the Rams draft Jimmy Clausen, and they're torn between Green, Floyd and Jones, I'm sure they'd lean toward Floyd because of the familiarity between he and Clausen.

If St. Louis opts to draft Ndamukong Suh, this selection would be Jake Locker. So, why don't the Rams take Suh and wait for Locker? Because there's no guarantee they'll be drafting No. 1 again. What if Suh helps them win five games next year? At 5-11, they'll be drafting seventh or eight, and like the Browns and Bills this year, they'll be out of the running for a top quarterback. And thus, the Rams would be screwed for the next five years or more.

  2. Detroit Lions: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Ndamukong Suh, DT

You can hear the Lions fans crying all the way from Detroit, "Oh no, not another receiver! Nooooooooooooo!!!!"

Don't worry, Lions fans. Matt Millen won't be drafting this guy. A.J. Green is not a drunk like Charles Rogers. He's not a fat slob like Mike Williams. He's not a drop-happy, lazy bum like Roy Williams. He's the real deal, and would make Detroit's offense ridiculously explosive. How do you defend Green, Calvin Johnson and Brandon Pettigrew?

  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Gerald McCoy, DT

No defensive back has been drafted in the top three picks in the last 12 years. That may change this year with Eric Berry, and the trend may also be bucked in 2011 with Patrick Peterson.

Peterson projects as a true shutdown corner. Darrelle Revis completely eliminates one side of the field for the opposition. Peterson might be able to do the same thing for the Buccaneers.

  4. Washington Redskins: Joseph Barksdale, OT, LSU
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Sam Bradford, QB

Quarterback and left tackle are the top two priorities. If the Redskins draft Sam Bradford, they'll need to protect him with a franchise left tackle.

Joseph Barksdale is a very athletic 315-pound left tackle. He'll be on LSU's blind side this year, and his stock will presumably soar.

  5. Kansas City Chiefs: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Russell Okung, OT

If you couldn't tell, 2011 is the year of the receiver. I doubt Chris Chambers sticks around for long, and who knows if Todd Haley and Dwayne Bowe will continue to get along?

  6. Seattle Seahawks: Jake Locker, QB, Washington
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Eric Berry, S and Derrick Morgan, DE

What a dream scenario for the Seahawks - their hometown hero stays in the Pacific Northwest. If this happens, Locker will look like a genius for eschewing the 2010 NFL Draft.

Unfortunately, it seldom works out this way. As we've seen in the past, something always goes wrong. Maybe Locker gets hurt. Maybe the scouts see something they don't like and his stock drops. Maybe his teammates don't play up to par and drag him down. Maybe he gets distracted. Maybe general managers become worried that his decision to go back to school means that he's not fully invested in football.

That's a lot of maybes, but just look at recent history: Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Brian Brohm and Sam Bradford all made a huge mistake by not declaring right away.

  7. Cleveland Browns: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Joe Haden, CB

Ah, if only the Browns drafted Mark Sanchez, they wouldn't be in a position to go with Brady Quinn for another year. Cleveland probably won't be able to land Jimmy Clausen or Sam Bradford this April, so Mike Holmgren will have to wait to get his guy in 2011.

  8. New England Patriots: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Jermaine Gresham, TE

New England acquired this selection from Oakland for Richard Seymour. Yet another reason Al Davis shouldn't be allowed to trade with anyone.

I imagine the Patriots will be hoping one of the top three receivers fall to them. In this scenario, however, they'll draft Heisman-winner Mark Ingram as their new franchise running back. If Tom Brady and Wes Welker are healthy, imagine how explosive New England's offense would be with Ingram as a threat coming out of the backfield.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Bryan Bulaga, OT

Like the Browns, the Bills are screwed out of getting a franchise quarterback this April. If only they were as lucky as the Rams...

  10. Jacksonville Jaguars: Greg Romeus, DE, Pittsburgh
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Tim Tebow, QB

Jacksonville's No. 1 need this offseason is generating fan interest so they can sell tickets. Their No. 2 need is finding some way to generate pressure on the opposing quarterback. Greg Romeus is the clear-cut No. 1 4-3 defensive end in this class right now.

  11. Chicago Bears: Allen Bailey, DT, Miami
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): None

The Bears need to generate more pressure on the quarterback - and not just from the defensive end position. The interior of Chicago's defensive line has to be upgraded.

  12. Miami Dolphins: Ryan Williams, RB, Virginia Tech
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Rolando McClain, ILB

There's a good chance Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams will no longer be Miami Dolphins when the 2011 NFL Draft rolls around. Ryan Williams had a dynamic redshirt freshman season for the Hokies in 2009.

  13. San Francisco 49ers: Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): C.J. Spiller, RB and Bryan Bulaga, OT

The 49ers would love for Joe Haden to fall to them at No. 13, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. If they don't draft a corner this April, they might still be searching for a No. 1 cover guy in the 2011 offseason.

  14. Denver Broncos: Cameron Heyward, DE/DT, Ohio State
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Dez Bryant, WR

If Cameron Heyward would have declared for the 2010 NFL Draft, he'd probably go to the Broncos at No. 11.

Denver needs an upgrade on its defensive line if it doesn't want to come close to giving up single-game rushing records to Jamaal Charles again.

  15. New York Giants: Mark Barron, S, Alabama
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Brian Price, DT

The Giants were constantly burnt deep in 2009. If they can't remedy their safety situation this offseason, they may consider Mark Barron or Rahim Moore in the 2011 NFL Draft.

  16. Tennessee Titans: Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 1/22/10): Everson Griffen, DE

The Titans need to find upgrades at defensive end, outside linebacker and corner this offseason. With a dry free agent market and only one first-round pick, getting upgrades for all three positions could be difficult.
