2011 NFL Mock Draft

Last update: Sunday, March 14, 2010 - Fifth edition
Next update: TBA.

This is obviously way too early for a 2011 NFL Mock Draft. But it's always fun to speculate what could happen in the future. I based this order on my 2010 NFL Power Rankings, and took only my projected 2010 NFL Draft first-round picks into account when making these selections. Click here for my 2010 NFL Mock Draft.

  1. St. Louis Rams: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Sam Bradford, QB

If I had to rank the three receivers right now, it would be A.J. Green, Michael Floyd and Julio Jones (drops plagued his 2009 season). However, if the Rams draft Jimmy Clausen, and they're torn between Green, Floyd and Jones, I'm sure they'd lean toward Floyd because of the familiarity between he and Clausen.

Since my last update, however, Sam Bradford has become the favorite. It's always possible that the Rams see through Sun Tan Man's lies, come to their senses and realize that Clausen is the superior prospect, but for now, this selection will be Green.

If St. Louis opts to draft Ndamukong Suh, this selection would be Jake Locker. So, why don't the Rams take Suh and wait for Locker? Because there's no guarantee they'll be drafting No. 1 again. What if Suh helps them win five games next year? At 5-11, they'll be drafting seventh or eight, and like the Browns and Bills this year, they'll be out of the running for a top quarterback. And thus, the Rams would be screwed for the next five years or more.

Pick change; previously Michael Floyd, WR

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: Jake Locker, QB, Washington
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Bryan Bulaga, OT

Matt Cassel is due a $7.5 million option bonus before the 2011 season. If he has another bad year - if the Chiefs are drafting No. 2 overall, he definitely did - then he will be released. Kansas City will then do what it should have done in the first place - draft a franchise signal caller early in the first round (Mark Sanchez, 2009).

Jake Locker is the No. 1 quarterback in the 2011 class - for now. Locker should have declared for the 2010 NFL Draft, because a billion things can happen over the next 14 months. Maybe Locker gets hurt. Maybe the scouts see something they don't like and his stock drops. Maybe his teammates don't play up to par and drag him down. Maybe he gets distracted. Maybe general managers become worried that his decision to go back to school means that he's not fully invested in football.

That's a lot of maybes, but just look at recent history: Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Brian Brohm and perhaps Sam Bradford all made a huge mistake by not declaring right away.

Of course, Locker could always sit out the 2010 season. It worked wonders for Bradford.

  3. Seattle Seahawks: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Gerald McCoy, DT and Anthony Davis, OT

The dream scenario for the Seahawks would be for hometown hero Jake Locker to stay in the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen in this 2011 NFL Mock Draft edition.

Would Pete Carroll take a Stanford quarterback? Well, Ryan Mallett's a poor fit for his West Coast offense, and he needs a franchise quarterback, so I think he'd put his grudge aside just this once.

  4. Detroit Lions: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Russell Okung, OT

I've had the Lions drafting a receiver in my previous few 2011 NFL Mock Draft updates, but they overpaid for Nate Burleson and probably won't have the luxury of taking a dynamic talent like Michael Floyd or Julio Jones.

Instead, Detroit will turn to addressing the cornerback position. Patrick Peterson fills a huge need as a true shutdown corner, and would allow the Lions to stay true to their draft strategy, which is picking the best player available on their board.

Pick change; previously A.J. Green, WR

  5. Cleveland Browns: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Eric Berry, S

Quarterback has to be an option, but the only remaining guy, Ryan Mallett, would be a poor fit for Mike Holmgren's West Coast offense.

With that in mind, the Browns take the best player on the board. The massive Michael Floyd (6-3, 220) is exactly what Cleveland needs on its offense (aside from a franchise quarterback).

Pick change; previously Julio Jones, WR

  6. Denver Broncos: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Dan Williams, NT

If the Broncos trade Brandon Marshall, they may take Dez Bryant with the No. 11 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. If they don't do that, chances are they'll be searching for a wideout here.

The gifted Julio Jones (6-4, 212) would be able to effectively replace Marshall. Denver fans can only hope that by 2011, their team will have a quarterback who can actually get Jones the ball downfield.

Pick change; previously Patrick Peterson, CB

  7. New England Patriots: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Jared Odrick, DE/DT

New England acquired this selection from Oakland for Richard Seymour. Yet another reason Al Davis shouldn't be allowed to trade with anyone.

I imagine the Patriots will be hoping one of the top three receivers fall to them. In this scenario, however, they'll draft Heisman-winner Mark Ingram as their new franchise running back. If Tom Brady and Wes Welker are healthy, imagine how explosive New England's offense would be with Ingram as a threat coming out of the backfield.

  8. Buffalo Bills: Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Trent Williams, OT

Like the Browns, the Bills are screwed out of getting a franchise quarterback this April. If only they were as lucky as the Rams...

Buffalo general manager Buddy Nix has stated that he's looking for a strong-armed quarterback to combat the windy conditions at Orchard Park. With that in mind, Ryan Mallett is a perfect fit here.

  9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Allen Bailey, DT, Miami
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Dez Bryant, WR

Jacksonville's No. 1 need this offseason is generating fan interest so they can sell tickets. Their No. 2 need is finding some way to generate pressure on the opposing quarterback - and not just from the defensive end position. John Henderson will have a $5.75 million salary in 2011, so he could be released if he has a mediocre 2010 campaign.

  10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Greg Romeus, DE, Pittsburgh
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Ndamukong Suh, DT

Tampa Bay's defensive line needs to be retooled. If they manage to acquire either Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy, defensive end will then become their top need.

  11. Washington Redskins: Joseph Barksdale, OT, LSU
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Sam Bradford, QB

Quarterback and left tackle are the top two priorities. Assuming the Redskins draft Jimmy Clausen, they'll need to protect him with a franchise left tackle.

Joseph Barksdale is a very athletic 315-pound left tackle. He'll be on LSU's blind side this year, and his stock will presumably soar.

  12. Arizona Cardinals: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Kyle Wilson, CB

With Mike Gandy gone, Levi Brown is moving to left tackle. Brown has struggled thus far in his career, so that's probably not a good thing. Gabe Carimi would be a nice fit on Arizona's offensive line.

  13. Chicago Bears: Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): None

Believe it or not, but there are other receivers in this 2011 NFL Draft class besides Julio Jones, Michael Floyd and A.J. Green. Jonathan Baldwin, at 6-5, 225, caught 57 balls for 1,111 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore in 2009.

Bears fans would love to get Jones, Floyd or Green, but Baldwin is definitely not a bad consolation prize.

Pick change; previously Robert Quinn, DE

  14. Cincinnati Bengals: Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Taylor Mays, SS

The Bengals started Tank Johnson at defensive tackle last year. Johnson is a solid player, but he shouldn't be anything more than a rotational lineman.

Marvin Austin is very athletic and has a ton of upside, but has never lived up to it on the field. Cincinnati is the type of team that would take a chance on him, however.

Pick change; previously Jonathan Baldwin, WR

  15. New York Giants: Jared Crick, DT, Nebraska
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Derrick Morgan, DE

General manager Jerry Reese loves building in the trenches. Defensive tackle is a need for the Giants this offseason, and if they pass on Brian Price in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, there's a chance they may still have to address the position next spring.

Pick change; previously Mark Barron, S

  16. Atlanta Falcons: Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 3/14/10): Sean Weatherspoon, OLB

The Falcons need help at defensive end. John Abraham will be 33 a month after the 2011 NFL Draft, while Jamaal Anderson will probably be released if he doesn't perform well in 2010. Robert Quinn had 19 TFL and 11 sacks as a sophomore for North Carolina.

Pick change; previously Ras-I Dowling, CB
