2011 NFL Mock Draft

Last update: Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009 - Second edition
Next update: TBA.

This is obviously way too early for a 2011 NFL Mock Draft. But it's always fun to speculate what could happen in the future. This order was determined randomly - I picked teams out of a hat - so I hope you enjoy my inaugural 2011 NFL Mock Draft.

  1. Denver Broncos: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Colt McCoy, QB

In this 2011 NFL Mock Draft, I'm going to do two things in order to project which players go where. 1) I'll attempt to predict future needs based on contract situations, the age of players and anything else. 2) I'll assume, for simplicity, that the team chooses the player I've assigned to them in the first round of my 2010 NFL Mock Draft.

If the Broncos are drafting first, we can assume Josh Mishandles was fired. New regimes mean new quarterbacks, but the Broncos will have too much money invested in Colt McCoy. Thus, they'll look elsewhere.

Brandon Marshall's contract expires in 2010, and given the fact that he keeps misbehaving, it doesn't look like he'll be with the team much longer. Thus, Denver might target arguably the top prospect in the 2011 NFL Draft class, Julio Jones caught 58 passes for 924 yards and four touchdowns as a true freshman in 2008. Jones is 6-4, 210, and runs a 4.4. He'll be a fine replacement for Marshall.

  2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Ndamukong Suh, DT

If the Buccaneers don't re-sign Antonio Bryant to a long-term deal - and they shouldn't because he just doesn't show up when he's not in a contract year - they'll need a true No. 1 receiver. Michael Floyd has been an unstoppable force so far this season; in just two full games, the 6-3, 220-pound Floyd has 11 catches for 320 yards and four touchdowns.

  3. New England Patriots: Clint Boling, OT, Georgia
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Arthur Jones, DE/DT

The Richard Seymour trade was a great long-term investment for the Patriots. There's a good chance that the Raiders once again finish as one of the five worst teams in the 2010 NFL season, so New England could have a top-five selection here.

My thinking regarding this trade is that Bill Belichick is targeting a blue-chip left tackle. Tom Brady still has at least five more potentially great seasons left in the tank, but Matt Light will be a 33-year-old free agent in March 2011. Clint Boling, who did a phenomenal job protecting Matthew Stafford's blind side after Trinton Sturdivant went down with an injury last year, is once again anchoring Georgia's front line with Sturdivant out.

Other obvious options are Da'Quan Bowers, Michael Floyd and Julio Jones. Floyd and Jones are off the board, and Bowers can't be an option because I have the Patriots taking Arthur Jones in my 2010 NFL Mock Draft.

  4. Detroit Lions: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Carlos Dunlap, DE

Six touchdowns allowed. Still no wins. The Lions have nothing at cornerback outside of Phillip Buchanon, and he's set to become a free agent a month before the 2011 NFL Draft. Patrick Peterson is arguably the top corner in the nation as a mere sophomore.

  5. New Orleans Saints: Marcus Forston, DT, Miami
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Rennie Curran, OLB

The Saints drafting fifth? Unrealistic, much? Well, if Drew Brees suffers a season-ending injury, it could definitely happen. And hey, this fits with the Super Bowl loser jinx because I have the Saints losing in the Super Bowl this year.

New Orleans almost has to go defense here. That would mean Marcus Forston and Travis Lewis are possibilities. Since I have the Saints addressing the weakside linebacker position, this selection will be Forston, a 6-2, 306-pound defensive tackle with 4.9 speed. Forston, who had 4.5 TFL and three sacks as a true freshman, will solidify the Saints defensive line playing next to Sedrick Ellis.

  6. Kansas City Chiefs: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Russell Okung, OT

The Chiefs were so desperate for receiver help this offseason that they brought in Amani Toomer. That speaks volumes about Todd Haley's lack of confidence in Mark Bradley and Devard Darling.

I don't have Kansas City drafting a wideout in the first round of my 2010 NFL Mock Draft, but the team can do so here. As a true freshman, A.J. Green had 56 catches for 963 yards and eight scores.

  7. New York Jets: Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Damian Williams, WR

A corner is an option, but not if an athletic freak like Da'Quan Bowers is on the board. Bowers seems to be better suited for the 4-3, but Rex Ryan should be able to use him just like Mike Singletary is utilizing Justin Smith, who absolutely dominated the Cardinals in Week 1.

  8. Dallas Cowboys: Blake DeChristopher, OT, Virginia Tech
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Reshad Jones, S

Flozell "The Hotel" Adams will be 36 before the begining of the 2011 NFL season. The Cowboys will need a new left tackle by then, and Blake DeChristopher is the type of lineman Dallas likes to employ.

  9. Cleveland Browns: Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Jevan Snead, QB

Knowing Eric Mangini, he'll probably turn this selection into several ninth-round picks and more of his former crappy players. If, however, the Browns take a sensible approach to drafting for a change, they'll find someone to play next to D'Qwell Jackson; Eric Barton needs to be upgraded now, but it suits Mangini to wait two years to do so.

  10. Green Bay Packers: Tyron Smith, OT, USC
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Joe Haden, CB

If for some reason the Packers don't upgrade their offensive tackles in the early rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft, they'll almost certainly do that here; Ted Thompson's No. 1 priority is to protect Aaron Rodgers.

Tyron Smith, the No. 15 overall prospect in his recruiting class (Rivals.com), will take over at left tackle once Charles Brown moves on to the next level.

  11. Buffalo Bills: Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Bryan Bulaga, OT

The Bills really need to get out of this picking No. 11 business. Fortunately, if they are in this position, they'll have the luxury of drafting the ultra-talented Travis Lewis, who had 144 tackles and 12 TFL for the Sooners last year.

As I've mentioned many times prior to the 2009 NFL Draft, linebackers don't go in the top three (the funny thing is, I didn't listen to my own advice), but if anyone can crack that barrier, it'll be Lewis.

  12. San Francisco 49ers: Janoris Jenkins, CB, Florida
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Jimmy Clausen, QB and Anthony Davis, OT

San Francisco's defense is very good, but the team has a problem at cornerback across from Nate Clements. With Walt Harris pretty much done, the 49ers have to rely on Shawntae Spencer and Dre Bly. This needs to change.

  13. Cincinnati Bengals: Chris Galippo, ILB, USC
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): C.J. Spiller, RB

Dhani Jones is doing a solid job in the middle of Cincinnati's defense, but he'll be a 33-year-old free agent come March 2011. Assuming he's not retained, the Bengals could use an outstanding player like Chris Galippo in Jones' place.

  14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Richard Samuel, RB, Georgia
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Sam Young, OT

Another first-round pick on a running back? Well, if Rashard Mendenhall keeps on screwing up, that may have to happen. Steeler fans will love Richard Samuel's tough power running.

  15. Philadelphia Eagles: Terrelle Pryor, QB, Ohio State
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Ciron Black, OT

The Eagles have so many expiring contracts in 2011 - Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, Brent Celek, Stewart Bradley, Quintin Mikell and David Akers to name a few - you have to wonder if Andy Reid plans on making the 2010 NFL campaign his final season in Philadelphia. With everything he's gone through with his two troubled sons, that would not surprise me one bit.

Let's assume that Reid leaves and McNabb, at the age of 34, is not re-signed. New regimes mean new quarterbacks, so the Eagles' new head coach could opt to draft a signal-caller of his own at this juncture.

Contrary to popular belief, Terrelle Pryor plays under center a good amount in a pro-style offense. He's definitely worthy of being taken in the first round.

  16. New England Patriots: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
2010 NFL Mock Draft selection (as of 9/20/09): Arthur Jones, DE/DT

Unless some players are re-signed or extended, the Patriots won't have a single running back under contract when the 2011 NFL Draft rolls around. Laurence Maroney probably won't be back, while Fred Taylor, Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk will all be near retirement.

Mark Ingram has been a terrific replacement for Glen Coffee. In his first two games, Ingram has rushed for 206 yards on only 36 carries. He also has seven catches for 82 more yards.
