draft2009backward

Last update: Sunday, April 19, 2009.

What would the 2009 NFL Draft look like if it were backward? It definitely wouldn’t be fair to give the Steelers the No. 1 overall selection, but here’s a Backward 2009 NFL Mock Draft, written by Matt McGuire. Click here if you’re looking for Walt’s 2009 NFL Mock Draft or Matt’s 2009 Mock Draft.

  1. Pittsburgh Steelers: Eugene Monroe, T, Virginia
The Steelers look to make a huge upgrade at left tackle, and they could not get a better left tackle in the 2009 NFL Draft other than Eugene Monroe. Contrary to popular opinion, he is better than Jason Smith. Problem is, most draft analysts just go with what everyone else says as opposed to actually watching games.

  2. Arizona Cardinals: Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest
Aaron Curry would be outstanding in the Cardinals hybrid defense and an upgrade at strongside linebacker over Chike Okeafor. Curry is a great play-maker and would take this defense to another level.

  3. Tennessee Titans: Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia
There is no doubt about it: Matt Stafford is a far better player than Vince Young. The Titans would then cut Young to make room for Stafford who would play immediately.

  4. New York Giants: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
This pick will probably be traded to Cleveland for Braylon Edwards, but at the moment, the Giants desperately need a top receiver and would not pass up on Michael Crabtree here.

  5. Buffalo Bills: Jason Smith, T, Baylor
The Bills recently received this pick via trade from the Philadelphia Eagles for Jason Peters and would then turn it into his replacement, Jason Smith.

  6. Indianapolis Colts: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
B.J. Raji does not fit into the Colts scheme, but he does have the athleticism to play 3-technique and brings instant play-making ability to the defensive line.

  7. Baltimore Ravens: Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas
I think the Ravens might be looking to upgrade Jarrett Johnson opposite Terrell Suggs on their defense, and Brian Orakpo brings a ton of positional value as a pass-rusher.

  8. Miami Dolphins: Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut
This is somewhat of a reach here, but the Dolphins are desperate for cornerback play with the loss of Andre Goodman via free agency to the Broncos.

  9. Atlanta Falcons: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
Up to this point, Jamaal Anderson has been a bust. The Falcons try to get a starter at the left defensive end position, and this is what I think Tyson Jackson is.

  10. New England Patriots: Everette Brown, DE/OLB, Florida State
The Patriots are looking for help on the edge with their pass rush and might take a look at Everette Brown at this point.

  11. Minnesota Vikings: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
Malcolm Jenkins projects as a cornerback in the Vikings Tampa-2 defense. If he does not work out there he could always be moved to safety. Sadly, Brad Childress would pass up on Mark Sanchez here in my opinion just because he is that stupid.

  12. Philadelphia Eagles: Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee
Andy Reid would love to invest in his defensive line with Robert Ayers on the board.

  13. Detroit Lions: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
No-brainer for the Lions; they have to find a franchise quarterback.

  14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State
General manager Mark Dominik probably does not have the guts to move up in the first round for Josh Freeman in the real draft, and he is lucky enough he doesn’t thave to here.

  15. Denver Broncos: Larry English, DE/OLB, Northern Illinois
The Broncos are in a tough spot with Mark Sanchez and Tyson Jackson off the board. They would target a pass rusher here, and I think Larry English will go higher than people expect.

  16. New York Jets: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers
The Jets were also hoping for a quarterback to fall, but will target Kenny Britt who is the end-zone target they lack.

  17. San Diego Chargers: Andre Smith, T, Alabama
Andre Smith fills a huge need at the right tackle position for the Chargers, man boobs and all.

  18. Houston Texans: Clay Matthews, OLB, USC
The Texans take the same pick here as they do in my real 2009 Mock Draft.

  19. New Orleans Saints: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State
With Malcolm Jenkins off the board, the Saints would like to address their running game. I took a ton of heat when I mocked this pick back in February, but it is looking like that projection paid off.

  20. Washington Redskins: Michael Oher, T, Mississippi
The Redskins still have a huge hole at right tackle with Jon Jansen and would not pass up on Michael Oher at this point.

  21. Denver Broncos: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
Denver is rumored to like Knowshon Moreno, and since they already made out with a pass-rusher (and no 5-technique or nose tackle on the board), they would draft for stability here in their offensive backfield.

  22. Buffalo Bills: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State
The Bills would love to have Pettigrew because he is a great blocker in their offense.

  23. San Francisco 49ers: Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB, Penn State
The 49ers need to make an upgrade over Manny Lawson here and do it with Aaron Maybin.

  24. Green Bay Packers: Eben Britton, T, Arizona
The Packers currently lack a starting right tackle, and with a lot of the 3-4 personnel talent off the board, would select Eben Britton here.

  25. Jacksonville Jaguars: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
The Jags would welcome Vontae Davis’ athleticism and upside on their defense.

  26. Oakland Raiders: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
It is so pathetic that the Raiders get the same player here as they do at No. 7 in my mock, but I am very confident it goes down.

  27. Cincinnati Bengals: William Beatty, T, Connecticut
William Beatty can be the great pass protector Carson Palmer needs in his offense.

  28. Cleveland Browns: Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC
Rey Maualuga would take over for Andra Davis at inside linebacker.

  29. Seattle Seahawks: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
The Seahawks need a weapon opposite T.J. Houshmandzadeh who isn’t exactly the youngest receiver in the NFC.

  30. Kansas City Chiefs: Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia
The Chiefs are looking for 3-4 personnel, which is the scheme Clint Sintim ran at Virginia.

  31. St. Louis Rams: James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State
The Rams need an inside linebacker desperately and James Laurainitis brings the high intangibles they need on defense.

Pick change; previously Knowshon Moreno, RB

  32. Detroit Lions: Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi
With all of the left tackles off the board, the Lions add a 3-technique pass-rusher to their defense.
