2013 NFL Mock Draft

Last update: Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Major changes in both rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2013 NFL Mock Draft is loosely based on my 2012 NFL Power Rankings.

Quick Recent NFL Draft Links:
  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
That's it. I'm mocking the Jaguars first until further notice. Believe me when I say that the entire front office is in complete disarray. Many members of the Jaguars' organization believe that Blaine Gabbert is a lemon. It also doesn't help that Maurice Jones-Drew is holding out; like Chris Johnson last year, Jones-Drew will suffer because of it.

Jacksonville can afford to take a quarterback in the first round for the second time in three years, thanks to the new CBA rules. The franchise isn't as tied to Gabbert as it would have been in, say, 2010. Gabbert is too craven to play the quarterback position, so after foolishly passing on Tim Tebow, the Jaguars will need to find an upgrade under center.

  2. Miami Dolphins: Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU
The Dolphins entered the 2012 offseason with rush linebacker being one of their greatest needs. They drafted Olivier Vernon in the third round, but there's no telling if he can be a worthy complement to Cameron Wake. If he doesn't show much this year, Miami won't hesitate to pull the trigger on one of the three stud pass-rushers in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  3. St. Louis Rams: Robert Woods, WR, USC
The Rams missed out on Justin Blackmon a couple of weekends ago. As the Jaguars traded ahead of them, Jeff Fisher reportedly slammed his glasses on the table. He went on to draft Brian Quick and Chris Givens, but neither is a likely No. 1 wideout in the NFL. Robert Woods obviously has a much better chance of becoming one.

  4. Cleveland Browns: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
I thought about slotting Robert Woods here if he were available, but Mike Holmgren doesn't believe in drafting receivers this early. Besides, he needs to upgrade his pass rush up front, as Jabaal Sheard is the only player who can consistently get to the quarterback. Frostee Rucker and Juqua Thomas-Parker were signed this offseason, but they won't contribute as much as Holmgren would like.

It's a pretty close call between Barevious Mingo, Sam Montgomery and Jarvis Jones for who the top pass-rusher will be in the 2013 NFL Draft. The Browns will be happy with any of them.

  5. Oakland Raiders: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
The Raiders are really going to struggle this year. They were over the cap, so they had to make cuts. As a consequence, they now have a ton of holes on their roster. They're also changing defensive formations because of a new coaching staff. And then there's the matter of Carson Palmer, who's a big question mark.

If Oakland is drafting this high in April 2013, there's little doubt that this pick will be a quarterback. The Raiders will have to choose carefully between Logan Thomas, Tyler Bray (leaving him out of this mock because he hasn't played a full season yet) and Tyler Wilson.

  6. Minnesota Vikings: Star Lotulelei, NT, Utah
Defensive tackle isn't Minnesota's biggest need, but it's certainly one area that the front office could address in the 2013 NFL Draft. The Vikings could use an upgrade at nose tackle next to Kevin Williams, and Star Lotulelei would be a great fit. He's also the top player available, so he makes sense from that standpoint as well.

Pick change; previously Matt Barkley, QB

  7. Indianapolis Colts: Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB, Georgia
The Colts did a great job of finding a worthy supporting cast around Andrew Luck. They'll have to use the 2013 NFL Draft to improve their defense. That includes finding an upgrade at the rush linebacker position.

I'm not sure why the Colts re-signed both Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis when they're in rebuilding mode, but they'll need to find someone next spring who can step in and start once either of them moves on (which very easily could be next year).

Pick change; previously Star Lotulelei, NT

  8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: David Amerson, CB, N.C. State
The Buccaneers decided they didn't like Morris Claiborne very much, so they traded out of the No. 5 spot in the 2012 NFL Draft and selected Mark Barron two picks later. They really need cornerback help, so they'll almost have to remedy that need at this juncture.

David Amerson is one of the top cornerback prospects to come along in quite awhile. He has a legitimate shot of cracking the top three - he'd be the first corner to do so since Shawn Springs in 1997.

  9. Seattle Seahawks: Keenan Allen, WR, California
The Seahawks are now impossible to predict because they don't believe in a big board. They'll take Day 2 prospects in the top 15 on a whim. Great job by the PR department though, leaking a bogus story to Pro Football Talk that seven general managers had Bruce Irvin in the first round. Nice try. I spoke to a high-ranking official on an NFC team who told me that they had Irvin as a second-round prospect.

Seattle's receiving corps is a big question mark. Sidney Rice can't stay healthy; Mike Williams can't control his weight; Doug Baldwin is just a slot receiver; Deon Butler also has injury problems; Golden Tate hasn't lived up to expectations yet; and Ricardo Lockette is a project. If this group disappoints in 2012, the Seahawks will strongly consider a wideout if they are drafting this high.

  10. New York Jets: Eric Reid, S, LSU
The Jets have spent most of the offseason signing old or injured safeties. Yeremiah Bell and LaRon Landry aren't going to cut it. Rex Ryan will have to find a more permanent solution at the position, which could mean spending this selection on Eric Reid, who is a better prospect than Mark Barron. Unfortunately for Reid, he doesn't have the benefit of being pushed up draft boards because of lacking depth at the position.

Pick change; previously Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB

  11. Arizona Cardinals: Logan Thomas, QB, Virginia Tech
The Cardinals missed out on Matt Barkley and Tyler Wilson, but luckily Logan Thomas is still available. Unless John Skelton really impresses in 2012, Arizona will be in the market for a new franchise quarterback.

  12. San Diego Chargers: Jackson Jeffcoat, DE/OLB, Texas
The Chargers just spent a first-round pick on a rush linebacker (Melvin Ingram), so why would they do that again? Well, Shaun Phillips will be a 32-year-old free agent next March, so San Diego will need a complement for Ingram. Jackson Jeffcoat just happens to be one of the top players available.

Pick change; previously Justin Hunter, WR

  13. Denver Broncos: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
John Elway clearly despises Peyton Manning because he didn't find any help for him in the 2012 NFL Draft. Maybe some therapy will help change his tune next spring. Adding a competent left tackle would be a good move; Ryan Clady, who has struggled since Mike Shanahan left Denver, will be a free agent in March.

Pick change; previously Johnathon Hankins, NT

  14. Cincinnati Bengals: Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina
I can't believe the best running back the Bengals came out with in the 2012 NFL Draft was Dan Herron. I can't imagine that Herron and BenJarvus Green-Ellis will give opposing defensive coordinators sleepless nights.

Cincinnati will be all over Marcus Lattimore if the team can get him next April.

  15. Tennessee Titans: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
The Titans were interested in drafting a highly ranked cornerback at No. 20 a couple of weekends ago, but neither Stephon Gilmore nor Dre Kirkpatrick fell to them. Maybe they'll have more luck in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Johnny Adams, CB

  16. Dallas Cowboys: Johnathon Hankins, NT, Ohio State
Dontari Poe was popularly mocked to the Cowboys in the 2012 NFL Draft because Rob Ryan loves big defensive linemen, and selecting Poe would have allowed him to move Jay Ratliff outside. Perhaps he would be able to do that with Johnathon Hankins.

Pick change; previously Eric Reid, S

Make no mistake. If the Jets are drafting tenth, they won't pass on Logan Thomas.

Colts will be better than the Jags!
Vikings meanwhile, they're guarnted 6 losses from in divisions. They'll lose to San Fran for sure, Texans for sure. If they lose two of three vs the other 3 in the AFC South then they'll be the first pick for sure.

@xxx.xxx.xxx4.86-difference is the colts sucked because manning was gone and had no consistent play at QB. jags had no consistent play at QB either, yet they managed to stil keep themselves out of a top 5 pick. they got a running game and an actual defense unlike the colts. no way they finish that bad. they will compete for 2nd place in the south, and im not even a jags fan

Holmgren has final say on every football decision. Heckert basically makes a suggestion on who to sign or draft and Holmgren says yes or no

And you are completely unaware of that Holmgren is the man who makes the calls on what players to sign and draft?

Seriously. Are you completely unaware of the fact that Mike Holmgren is NOT the GM of the Browns? Tom Heckert is.

if you are going to try to be the "first out of the gate" at least try to edit what you write week over week, just lazy

Buffalo Bills: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
The Bills didn't spend a single draft pick on a quarterback this past weekend in contrarian fashion. They'll need to do so next spring.

I'm not sure where you heard that Buffalo was considering moving Kyle Williams to DE in their new 4-3 scheme. In their 3-4 scheme, there was some talk of moving Williams to play 5-technique end.

Williams isn't a good fit for a 4-3 end. His skill set is best as a 3-technique DT. If Buffalo drafts a DT, it's to replace Williams, which would only happen if he suffered a major injury.

How do his skills not translate? He has incredible size and is crazy athletic for his size. He was only a sophomore last year and dominated 3 or 4 games. Many GMs drool over his measurables. Just look at JPP. If he can improve from last year and put up an 8 or 9 sack season, he will be a 1st rounder.

Just because he will be done rehabbing doesn't mean he will be able to play at a high enough level to be a starting LT. Some people never recover enough to from that injury to be starters ever again. Not to mention he ruptured it a 2nd time about a week after surgery and had to get the surgery redone. And he will be 31 by the time it heals. And if Bell's knee keeps acting up, they will release him. His contract is set up so he gets most of his money after the 1st year. So if he can't get healthy they will cut him before the 2nd year kicks in.

There has been no indication that MJD and the Jags will get a deal done anytime soon. And holdouts really seem to hurt RBs more than most positions.

That Pro Bowl TE you speak of was basically invisible last year. And don't blame Gabbert. TEs are supposed to be rookie QBs best friends and serve as a safety valve for them. But Lewis could hardly ever get open

The WRs should be better than last year, but they are no sure thing. Laurent Robinson is always hurt and last year was the first season that he ever stayed healthy. And some WRs have a habit of not giving 100% once they get a decent contract. Lee Evans did absolutely nothing last year. And while I think Blackmon will be good, he is still a rookie so there's a chance he has some growing pains

And Aaron Ross is a below average starter who has never played without an amazing pass-rush covering up his deficiencies.

The Jags could definitely be the worst team in football. Nobody thought the Colts would be as bad as they were last year. We figured they wouldnt be a playoff team without Manning, but not the worst team. So the Jags could be as bad if Gabbert doesnt greatly improve

Gabbert looking good in OTAs and minicamps means nothing. His problem last year was that he was afraid of being hit and couldn't stay composed when the blitz came. They rarely go after the QB in minicamps and OTAs, and when they do, they're still not allowed to touch the QB. So we have no idea if his biggest problem is fixed at all.

The Jags could easily pick #1. Did anybody think the Colts would be the worst team in the league last year? We knew they wouldn't be a playoff team without Manning, but nobody thought they would lose their first 13 games. Its no guarantee that Gabbert improves very much, and teams with bad QBs usually have the worst records

You think that was offensive? I will show you offensive. You are Matt Millen's butt buddy. You spend your weekends having kielbasa shoved up your backside and then being forced to eat it. The fumes from Millen's countless laced kielbasa collections probablly caused you to come on here and post stupid things, so for that I'm sorry. William Gholston's draft stock won't be affected at all because of a cousin who flopped, so shutup with the argument.
