St. Louis Rams: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
I have heard from a couple sources that there are some teams and scouts that hate Jimmy Clausen's personality. He might come off as a diva or arrogant, but can't we say the same about Philip Rivers - one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL?
Suh is an elite talent and there is no doubt that the Rams could use a dominant defensive lineman. Wait - weren't Chris Long and Adam Carriker supposed to be that? Will the Rams invest another first-round pick on the defensive line? Maybe, but if quarterback isn't the pick here then there is only one option.
-
Detroit Lions: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
Jim Schwartz and the Lions offensive line coach have raved about Jeff Backus' play this season, and it seems that we can diminish the odds that Oklahoma State tackle Russell Okung will be the pick here. Gerald McCoy is one of the top players in this class. He has elite athletic ability and is a consistent playmaker in the mold of a Kevin Williams. The Lions need playmakers desperately on the defensive line so it seems almost certain this pick will either be Suh or McCoy.
-
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
This is the last thing the Bucs want to happen. Defensive tackle is their No. 1 need and it would kill them to see Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy already off the board. I am also not buying that Tampa will move up for Suh because they have too many needs and those second-round picks are pure gold.
Eric Berry is an elite talent and the No. 1 player on my board. His ability to make plays against the run is amazing and he will be reminiscent of John Lynch for many Tampa fans. In coverage he will give this team more versatility at safety because they can use he and Tanard Jackson in an interchangable role - which seems to be a trend around the league.
Georgia Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan could also be in play here and barring Donald Penn's contract situation, we can't completely rule out Russell Okung, but I'm willing to bet Tampa's board will be stacked Suh-McCoy-Berry up to this point.
-
Washington Redskins: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
Daniel Snyder loves big stars and big names. Jimmy Clausen is both after being a national story since he was in middle school. He went to Notre Dame - a very highly visual program on the national stage - and he was completely dominant as a junior. I think we also have to rule out Clausen's potential personality issues with the Redskins because Mike Shanahan drafted Jay Cutler and he was highly successful with him in Denver.
If the Rams are genuinely interested in Clausen, don't be shocked if Daniel Snyder tells Bruce Allen to make a trade up to secure the chance to draft him. With teams in the top 10 needing quarterbacks (St. Louis, Washington, Seattle, Cleveland, Buffalo), Mr. Clausen might be quite the commodity come late April.
-
Kansas City Chiefs: Russell Okung, T, Oklahoma State
This pick is a no-brainer and barring a huge screw-up, I think we can all be 99-percent assured the Kansas City Chiefs are handcuffed to taking a left tackle at this pick. It will be interesting to see whether it ends up being Okung, Anthony Davis or Bruce Campbell, as the battle for the No. 1 tackle spot is one of the best storylines of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Okung was the most consistent lineman in the nation this year and he will test out on a very high level athletically. I see no reason as to why Anthony Davis can take this from him (more inconsistent - doesn't have elite lateral movement or athleticism), but watch out for Campbell because an amazing Combine could really vault his draft stock as I have predicted since October.
-
Seattle Seahawks: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
Pete Carroll to the Seattle Seahawks - wow. I never in a million years saw this coming. I find it very interesting that he was so quick to turn down coaching jobs in the past, and it just so happens that this year will seem like USC is going to be hit with some sanctions regarding the Reggie Bush and Joe McKnight fiascos. I think Carroll will be out of the league in less than four years and back to the college coaching ranks.
Carroll needs to take a quarterback, and while he would love to have Jimmy Clausen (perfect West Coast fit), it doesn't look like he will be able to secure him unless he trades Nos. 6 and 14 picks to move up. Sam Bradford is clearly the next best option and the quarterback of the future for Seattle.
-
Cleveland Browns: Joe Haden, CB, Florida
The Browns evaluation of Georgia Tech pass rusher Derrick Morgan is CRITICAL at this point in the mock. If they view him as a 3-4 outside linebacker, then he might be a heavy favorite at this pick (Does this sound familiar - Eric Mangini drafting a bulky rush linebacker in the top 10?). If not, then Joe Haden will get serious consideration.
The NFL is a passing league. Passing offense and passing defense wins and loses games now - not rushing offense and rushing defense. The league is slowly transitioning to more spread formations and route combinations, and if you have a shutdown corner, it really changes everything. Joe Haden will be a valuable commodity and he makes a lot of sense for Cleveland here with both quarterbacks off the board and no need at offensive tackle.
-
Oakland Raiders: Bruce Campbell, T, Maryland
Bruce Campbell is an athletic freak of nature and if he cracks a 4.95 40 time at the Combine, all bets are off and you can pencil in Campbell falling no further than the Raiders pick here.
Al Davis might still give JaMarcus Russell one more year, and with Mario Henderson being pretty mediocre last season, drafting a franchise left tackle is a smart move.
-
Buffalo Bills: Bryan Bulaga, T, Iowa
After talking with a couple sources in Mobile at the Senior Bowl, I've learned that tackle Anthony Davis out of Rutgers has some serious work ethic concerns. I'm not sure Buffalo wants to gamble on his upside when they can draft a player with just as much potential in Bryan Bulaga who battled a thyroid injury all season. He shut down Derrick Morgan in the Orange Bowl and it wouldn't shock me if Bulaga went in the top 10 picks.
Pick Change; previously Anthony Davis, OT
-
Jacksonville Jaguars: Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
Despite Derrick Harvey not looking like he will pan out in Jacksonville, Gene Smith isn't the general manager who drafted him. Derrick Morgan is without a doubt the best player on the board at this point, and what we learned in the 2009 NFL Draft was Gene Smith is a huge fan of the Best Player Available theory. He will wreak havoc off the edge for Jacksonville as Smith continues to build his team on the line of scrimmage. The Jaguars need a pass rusher, and I think Morgan can be that guy.
-
Denver Broncos: Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
It is looking like the Broncos are seriously interested in trading away Brandon Marshall, and with genius Josh McDaniels in charge, all it takes is a few bad words from Marshall (like Jay Cutler) and he is gone.
A team desperate for a big threat at receiver is really going to like Dez Bryant because there is a perceived lack of No. 1 wideouts in this draft, even though I love Damian Williams from USC. Bryant is a solid route runner and he has great lateral quickness to be a good receiver in the NFL after the catch (and if you watched the Wild Card playoffs then you know how important YAC is). Bryant high points the football and is able to make the circus catch.
-
Miami Dolphins: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE/OLB, South Florida
I think general manager Jeff Ireland will be targeting a freak pass-rushing specialisit in the 2010 NFL Draft, and I think the top rush linebacker is Jason Pierre-Paul out of South Florida. JPP has elite flexbility and balance off the edge combined with a great first step and explosiveness. You don't think he will bring Ireland and Parcells visions back of DeMarcus Ware? I do.
Pick Change; previously Rolando McClain, ILB
-
San Francisco 49ers: Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama
This is a relatively easy pick for the 49ers here as they take easily the best player on the board. McClain can be a star on this defense, and it just scares you to think the kind of damage he could do with Patrick Willis on the interior. There are probably bigger needs for the 49ers at this point, but you can't argue the immense value McClain gives the 49ers here with his leadership, intangibles and production at Alabama. He doesn't have great speed or range, but when you play next to Willis, I don't think you need his ideal athletic ability.
Pick Change; previously Jason Pierre-Paul, DE/OLB
-
Seattle Seahawks: Taylor Mays, S, USC
Pete Carroll to the Seahawks combined with a big need at safety means Taylor Mays has to be in serious play for the Seahawks at this pick. Mays is a big, physical safety who does a great job of closing in on run support. The problem is he will be greatly exposed at the next level in coverage and he too often goes for the big hit instead of being calm and wrapping up. Seattle could also go with USC receiver Damian Williams at this pick and that also would not surprise me in the least because of Carroll.
-
New York Giants: Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee
Dan Williams had a great week in Mobile and I was told he really impressed NFL scouts. The Giants didn't get the production they wanted out of their defensive line, and they need to become dominant once again on the interior. I thought this was an intriguing pick for the Giants since at this point Earl Thomas is the pretty cliche selection here for New York. I'm curious to see how G-Men fans feel about this pick, so feel free to send me an e-mail.
Pick Change; previously Earl Thomas, FS
-
Tennessee Titans: Brian Price, DT, UCLA
Brian Price is a player who will be flying up boards soon on the Internet. Price is a highly active three-technique and he grades out very highly with his quickness and athleticism. He is strong at the point of attack and he does a good job of staying low to generate leverage. Sometimes he is overwhelmed by massive linemen, but a team like Tennessee should fall in love with the UCLA standout.
