Some teams enter 2026 expecting to compete for the Super Bowl, while others are hoping young quarterbacks or revamped rosters can accelerate their rebuilding timelines. Before Week 1 arrives, here is a quick look at where all 32 teams stand.

It must be noted that any uncertainty makes preseason projections particularly interesting. Injuries, quarterback development and unexpected breakout players can radically alter the league within weeks. AFC East

Cincinnati Bengals: Everything revolves around keeping Joe Burrow healthy. With Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase together, Cincinnati possesses one of football’s most dangerous passing attacks. Defensive improvement could determine whether the Bengals merely reach the playoffs or make a deep run.

Cleveland Browns: Cleveland remains in transition. Developing young talent and establishing a long-term answer at quarterback matter more than short-term expectations, though the Browns still have enough defensive ability to make life difficult for opponents.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Pittsburgh continues trying to maximize a veteran roster while navigating questions about its long-term direction. Mike Tomlin’s teams are rarely easy outs, but competing with Baltimore and Cincinnati requires consistent quarterback play.

AFC South

Houston Texans: Houston went 12-5 last season and enters 2026 with legitimate championship aspirations. The Texans have built an impressive roster around C.J. Stroud, and their defense gives them the ability to win games even when the offense struggles.

Kansas City Chiefs: Betting against Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid is rarely wise. Kansas City may no longer appear invincible, but its championship experience ensures the Chiefs remain dangerous whenever they reach the postseason.

Los Angeles Chargers: The Chargers have the quarterback and coaching necessary to contend, but injuries and offensive-line concerns could determine their ceiling. If Justin Herbert receives adequate protection, Los Angeles can challenge anyone.

Las Vegas Raiders: Las Vegas begins another attempt to establish long-term stability. The Raiders have promising pieces, but their immediate success depends heavily on how quickly a reworked offense comes together.

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys: Dallas remains talented enough to contend when healthy, but translating regular-season ability into postseason success remains the challenge. Dak Prescott’s health and defensive consistency will be critical.

New York Giants: The Giants continue searching for sustainable offensive improvement. Their defense contains intriguing talent, but quarterback development will largely determine whether they can escape the bottom half of the NFC.

Los Angeles Rams: The Rams remain firmly in win-now mode. Their veteran core and aggressive roster construction make them one of the NFC’s most interesting championship contenders.

San Francisco 49ers: San Francisco’s ceiling remains high, but health has become an annual concern. If their stars stay on the field, the 49ers possess enough talent to return to the playoffs.

Seattle Seahawks: Seattle enters 2026 as one of the NFC’s teams to beat after reaching the sport’s highest level last season. The challenge now is handling increased expectations while maintaining the defensive identity and efficiency that fueled its success.

A Wide-Open Race

The defining feature of the 2026 NFL season may be parity. Buffalo, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Denver, Houston and Kansas City all have plausible paths through the AFC, while Philadelphia, Detroit, Green Bay, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington give the NFC considerable depth.

Ultimately, preseason analysis can only reveal so much. Every year produces teams that dramatically exceed expectations and supposed contenders that collapse under injuries or poor play.
