Browns 27, Steelers 24
The Steelers scored a touchdown on their opening drive in this game. The Browns, conversely, went three-and-out on their initial possession. Cleveland committed nine penalties in the first half alone. And yet, by intermission, the Browns led 21-10.
How did that happen? It was twofold. When the Steelers had the ball, Aaron Rodgers was pressured relentlessly following the opening drive, with one hit on him resulting in an interception that set up a Cleveland touchdown. He couldn't get anything going, and the Steelers seemingly forgot that Jaylen Warren was picking up chunks of yardage on the ground.
When the Browns had the ball, they were hitting big plays, particularly to Denzel Boston. They were also able to scheme some nice plays to KC Concepcion and Quinshon Judkins on bubble screens. As a result, Deshaun Watson registered 181 passing yards in the first half alone.
It was more of the same for the Steelers in the second half. Rodgers spent some time yelling at Mike McCarthy, while T.J. Watt had the same sort of interaction with defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.
It looked like the Steelers would get some momentum when they strip-sacked Watson when it was still 21-10, but the Steelers did nothing with the ball, as they were guilty of a false start and then surrendered a sack.
Finally, something broke Pittsburgh's way. Watson threw an interception that looked like it would be negated by pass interference, but the replay review showed that the ball was tipped. The Steelers took over, and thanks to a deep pass to DK Metcalf and an ensuing touchdown to Darnell Washington, the margin was trimmed to five.
The Browns kicked a field goal on the next possession, and following a Steelers three-and-out, they had a chance to ice the victory when Harold Fannin was left wide open. Watson, however, threw the ball way behind Fannin, giving the Steelers one more chance.
Rodgers responded with two beautiful passes to Metcalf to get into the red zone. Washington then drew a pass interference flag, setting up a touchdown pass to Pat Freiermuth. The Browns were offsides on the two-point conversion attempt, allowing Rodgers to run a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line. The conversion was good, tying the game at 24.
Although the Steelers battled back, they still left too much time on the clock. Watson connected on a couple of passes to Jerry Jeudy, of all people, as well as Fannin, to move into field goal range for a 56-yard try for Andre Smyzt, who connected to win the game.
Colts 30, Redskins 13
The Redskins were missing Jayden Daniels for the second game in a row, but they at least were in good hands with a solid backup in Marcus Mariota. That, however, did not last very long. Mariota suffered an ankle injury in the red zone and had to give way to seventh-round rookie Athan Kaliakmanis, who frankly looked scared at times during some of his early snaps. He had a miserable interception where he threw the ball right to a defender, which set up a Colts touchdown.
If Indianapolis had a functional offense, it would have been up several touchdowns at that point. However, that wasn't the case because of two things. First, Daniel Jones was awful in the first half. He lost a fumble on a dumb sack and threw a horrendous interception. His accuracy was very poor, and the Colts just couldn't get anything going.
The second problem was that Jonathan Taylor ran just eight times in the first half, despite the fact that time of possession was about even. The Colts, however, had a smarter game plan in the second half. Taylor ran 12 times following intermission and nearly got to 100 rushing yards.
This, along with Kaliakmanis' interception, sparked Indianapolis. Kaliakmanis had a couple of great deep throws, one of which was a 47-yard touchdown to Treylon Burks, but his passing was way too inconsistent. He was way off the mark on numerous passes, and the Redskins couldn't sustain consistent drives with him at quarterback.
Patriots 29, Bills 26
The Patriots were coming off a pathetic blowout loss to the Jaguars, but they played much harder in this game. That was apparent right away when Drake Maye orchestrated a great initial drive, which featured a long Maye rushing attempt and was capped off with a touchdown to Romeo Doubs.
However, we saw more of Maye's turnovers, which have been a huge problem this year. He was strip-sacked near the red zone on the ensuing possession, negating a potential score. Another crucial error, this time by Mike Vrabel, came when he committed a very uncharacteristic unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, giving Buffalo some needed yardage in the red zone. Josh Allen was able to sneak in for a touchdown to tie the game at 14.
Allen had to rely on Keon Coleman and Khalil Shakir in this game, as DJ Moore suffered a shoulder injury. Shakir lost a fumble late in the first half, but Doubs had an interception bounce off his hands, and that gave Buffalo a 17-14 lead heading into intermission.
The Patriots, however, were undaunted coming out of halftime. Maye had another great run on a touchdown drive to take the lead. The Bills answered with Coleman catching a great pass off a deflection. Allen then fired a laser to Coleman a bit later to go up five.
One of these quarterbacks was going to make a crucial error in this tight AFC East battle, but it wasn't Maye. Instead, Maye lofted a touchdown pass to Efton Chism to take a 27-26 lead. Allen was forced to answer, but was intercepted instead, giving the Patriots the upset victory.
Bears 23, Jets 12
The Bears are now 2-0 with their backup quarterbacks. Six days after Case Keenum had a heroic Monday night performance in Philadelphia, Tyson Bagent led the Bears to another victory over the Jets.
Bagent had a great initial drive, taking his team down to the Jets' 1-yard line. The Bears appeared to score on a 1-yard D'Andre Swift rushing touchdown, but replay review negated the play. That didn't seem like a problem, except the Bears stalled out from the 1.
The Jets didn't do anything with their next possession, and Chicago was able to take the ball down to the 1-yard line again. Kyle Monangai was stuffed on third down, but Chicago went for it on fourth down, and Monangai was able to get into the end zone this time to give the Bears a 7-0 lead.
This was a brutal day for the Jets' defense, which surrendered nearly 500 net yards to Chicago. One of the few positives occurred when Minkah Fitzpatrick intercepted Bagent, snapping the all-time record for most days without an interception by a team at 637 days.
The Jets also forced a fumble from Swift in the third quarter, but they just couldn't do anything offensively all afternoon. Geno Smith saw tons of pressure with one of his best offensive linemen sidelined, and he didn't get anything going until a late garbage-time touchdown. Down 11, the Jets could have made it a game had they forced a stop, but they couldn't get Chicago off the field in the fourth quarter. The Bears won the time of possession by 25 minutes.
Giants 36, Cardinals 24
The final score shows that the Giants beat the Cardinals by 12 points, but that result couldn't be more misleading. This was a crazy back-and-forth game with wild swings up until the final seconds.
Arizona established a 14-3 lead early on, with Marvin Harrison Jr. catching a touchdown pass. He shushed the crowd, perhaps targeting his critics who have pointed out that he has done nothing in the NFL outside of one dominant game against the Rams in his rookie year. This turned out to be his only catch on the afternoon.
Following a Giants field goal, Jacoby Brissett turned the tide in the Giants' favor, throwing an interception into double coverage. Brissett then had another interception, allowing the Giants to capitalize with a Jameis Winston touchdown pass to Malik Nabers. It seemed like Nabers would be knocked out of the game when he got hurt earlier, but he came through with a nice touchdown grab to give the Giants the lead.
Now down 19-14, the Cardinals drilled a 60-yard field goal prior to halftime and then went up again on a Brissett touchdown pass to Elijah Higgins. The Giants were now down by one, but Winston led a drive where he was able to locate Theo Johnson in the end zone for a touchdown.
The Giants looked like they would give the game away when they were up 27-24 and Najee Harris lost a fumble near midfield. However, the Giants made a big defensive stand, pressuring Brissett on third down and forcing a punt.
Brissett bounced back and led Arizona down to the goal line in the final seconds. On fourth down, however, Brissett threw a pass that was intercepted, and Giants cornerback Deonte Banks ran it the other way for a long pick-six to give the Giants a misleading 12-point victory.
Cowboys 34, Texans 30
Houston's offense had been extremely sluggish heading into this game, but Nico Collins' return certainly fixed that issue. Collins made some explosive plays on the initial drive, allowing the Texans to score a touchdown.
Houston was also able to benefit from some positive special teams plays. The Texans blocked a field goal, and following an 18-yard Collins reception, they were able to get another score. They also benefited from a 65-yard miss from Brandon Aubrey, and they scored right after that as well.
Now, based on everything I said, it sounds like the Texans had a massive lead, but that was hardly the case. They were unable to fully capitalize off Dallas' mistakes, kicking field goals instead of scoring touchdowns. They had three field goals following their initial touchdown, giving them a 16-6 lead heading into intermission.
The Texans had full control of this game, and the Cowboys weren't able to muster much offensively. That completely changed in the second half. George Pickens made a huge play in the third quarter, and thanks to two Houston penalties, Javonte Williams was able to score a touchdown.
While Pickens made that one big play, it was CeeDee Lamb who did most of the damage against the Texans. Houston had no answer for Lamb, and he dominated the second half, ultimately giving the Cowboys a 27-23 lead.
The Texans were stuck in a third-and-long on the ensuing possession, but got out of it with a pretty hook-and-lateral play on a C.J. Stroud pass to Dalton Schultz, who pitched it back to David Montgomery. Woody Marks eventually scored a touchdown to put the Texans up 30-27.
The Cowboys had about two minutes remaining on the clock. Houston's defense would have been able to come up with some stops in the past, but not this year's version. The Texans continued to allow big plays to Lamb, and the Cowboys eventually scored a touchdown.
The Texans had 40 seconds remaining. They moved toward midfield, but ran out of time on a failed Hail Mary.
Jaguars 22, Bengals 17
If you told the Bengals that they would hold the Jaguars to 22 points, they would have taken it, especially following last week's disastrous result against the Steelers. Yet, they couldn't reach 20 themselves, thanks in part to Ja'Marr Chase's injury early in the game.
With Chase being injured on a tackle where the defender grabbed his facemask and turned it, the rest of the team needed to play above its level to compensate for the loss. Instead, Joe Burrow threw multiple interceptions. One occurred when he was held, but another would transpire down 16-10 when he passed the ball right to a defender. It was an inexplicable pass from such a great quarterback.
Despite these mistakes, the Jaguars couldn't pull away. They committed 10 penalties in the first 20 minutes of the game. There was one sequence where Bhayshul Tuten had a 44-yard touchdown run negated by a hold, and then another hold on a first-and-goal turned a potential touchdown into a field goal.
Later in the game, Trevor Lawrence delivered a big gain to Parker Washington to seemingly ice the victory. It appeared as though the Jaguars would be able to kneel down, but replay review ruled that Washington stepped out of bounds. As a result, Cincinnati had another chance to win the game.
With 1:44 remaining on the clock, Burrow connected on passes for 29, 18 and 15 yards to enter the red zone. However, following three consecutive incompletions, Burrow was stopped on a fourth-and-10. He connected with Chase Brown for a reception, but Brown was tackled after a 9-yard gain on fourth-and-10 to end the contest.
Rams 24, Eagles 20
The Rams outgained the Eagles by nearly 250 yards in this game. The Eagles didn't even muster 175 net yards of offense, and yet the Rams nearly lost to Philadelphia. They needed a comeback victory after trailing 20-10 in the fourth quarter.
The Rams committed many mistakes in this game and nearly dropped to 1-3. Matthew Stafford had an awful overthrow on an interception early in the game, allowing the Eagles to kick a field goal. Los Angeles then allowed a great punt return, which gave the Eagles a touchdown pass when Jalen Hurts found Darius Cooper in the end zone. On the play, the Rams nearly intercepted the pass, but the ball was thrown just over the fingertips of the Los Angeles defensive back.
The Eagles then added another touchdown after Stafford was intercepted with the Rams down 13-10 right before halftime. Trent McDuffie was flagged for pass interference on Dontayvion Wicks, setting up yet another Hurts touchdown pass to Cooper.
All seemed to be lost for the Rams when they continued to sputter, especially when they had the ball at the Philadelphia 38-yard line following a stupid decision by the Eagles to go for it on fourth-and-a-long-1. However, they got nothing out of the drive thanks to an illegal blind-side block by Puka Nacua.
As mentioned earlier, the Rams needed a comeback from down 10 in the fourth quarter. They were sparked when an Eagles defender hit Kyren Williams late out of bounds to set up a Rams touchdown. Los Angeles forced a three-and-out after that, ensuring that Philadelphia would finish an all-time-worst 0-for-12 on third down.
The Rams had a few minutes to drive down the field and were able to do so, as Stafford made amends for his prior mistakes to engineer a game-winning drive.
Ravens 24, Titans 18
This matchup was billed as Derrick Henry's revenge game, but it turned out to be about Lamar Jackson instead, and not in a good way. Jackson had a great first half, including a drive where he connected on a 30-yard pass to Rashod Bateman and a 51-yard downfield bomb to Zay Flowers. Jackson had 222 passing yards in the first half alone. He was on pace for nearly 450 yards for the entire game, as Tennessee had no answer for him.
It turns out that the only way the Titans could stop Jackson was to depend on an injury. Jackson hurt his foot just prior to halftime on an awkward tackle, and he was in a walking boot after the game.
The Ravens are lucky that they were up 24-7 at halftime because they didn't score a single point following intermission. Tyler Huntley did not threaten Tennessee's defense at all, but the score was 24-10 for what seemed like an eternity.
Unfortunately for Baltimore bettors, the Titans had a backdoor touchdown drive at the very end of the game, which probably would never have happened had Jackson remained on the field.
Packers 17, Buccaneers 14
By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell
Late in the first half, Daniels had a fourth-and-1 conversion with a completion to Hurst. However, Daniels stared down a receiver, and Cooper intercepted Daniels with a return inside the Bucs 45-yard line. The Packers turned that into a 58-yard field goal on the final play of the half to take a 10-7 lead into the locker room.
Early in the third quarter, Kraft hauled in a short touchdown catch to give the Packers a ten-point lead. Daniels responded with a 21-yard run, a screen to Kenny Gainwell, and then a touchdown pass to Gainwell to open the fourth quarter.
Green Bay drove inside the five, but Tyeke Smith stripped Kaleb Johnson, and Zion McCollum recovered to deny the Packers points. However, the defense forced a punt from the end zone, and that set up their offense starting inside the Bucs' 40. However, the Packers squandered the opportunity as Jordan Love did not see Jacob Parrish, who was watching Love's eyes, and that led to Parrish undercutting Golden for an interception. That gave the Bucs another shot to tie or take the lead with around four minutes remaining.
Daniels got some completions and moved the ball across midfield, but a Packers sack put them behind the sticks. On a fourth-and-11, Daniels was about to be sacked and threw incomplete pass to clinch the win for Green Bay.
Chiefs 30, Raiders 27
By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell
Early in the third quarter, the Raiders drove into Chiefs territory, but Las Vegas opted against a short field goal and failed to convert a fourth-and-2. Both teams' defenses were doing a nice job of getting off the field and forcing punts, but at the end of the third quarter, Kenneth Walker broke free down the sideline and exploded for a 77-yard run to the Raiders' eight-yard line. Ten seconds into the fourth quarter, Mahomes threw a bullet to Thornton for a touchdown to take a 17-13 lead.
The Raiders returned the kickoff 53 yards to start at the Chiefs' 45. A completion to Brock Bowers set up a Matt Gay field goal to cut the Chiefs lead to 17-16. Las Vegas took the lead with a good drive that started with a 27-yard completion to Cody White. Jeanty ran for 19, and that set up another field goal for Gay. With three and a half minutes remaining, Mahomes hit Thornton deep down the field for a 55-yard completion inside the Raiders' 10, but Thornton suffered a devastating injury to his foot and ankle as he stood up. Walker promptly scored from a few yards out to put the Chiefs up 23-19 after the two-point conversion failed. The Raiders had 3:21 remaining, but Las Vegas fumbled the kick return, and the Chiefs recovered. The next play, Walker ran around the corner and dove into the end zone with a 22-yard touchdown.
With three minutes remaining, the Raiders were down 30-19. Cousins moved them in range before he made a great play to dodge R. Mason Thomas in the pocket and then rolled out to loft in a touchdown pass to Bowers from 20 yards out. The two-point conversion was good to cut the Chiefs' lead to 30-27. Las Vegas had one more shot to try for a long field goal, but Cousins was intercepted in Chiefs territory to clinch the win for Kansas City.
Vikings 15, Dolphins 10
It may sound weird to say that the Vikings dominated this game because they only won 15-10. However, they won time of possession by 20 minutes, outgained the Dolphins by nearly 150 yards, and limited Miami's quarterback to fewer than 10 completions.
Minnesota's defense led the way in this game. The Vikings surrendered a long touchdown run to Ollie Gordon, but that was pretty much it. Their pass rush devastated Malik Willis, who was guilty of a fumble when Dallas Turner strip-sacked him in a 6-0 game.
So, why did the Vikings win by only five? Well, they dominated time of possession and constantly moved the chains, but they just couldn't convert in the red zone. Miami's beleaguered defense deserves credit for limiting the Vikings to five field goals.
The Vikings had a chance for a final score at the end, but a Kyler Murray pass to T.J. Hockenson ended the game when Hockenson took a knee at the 1-yard line instead of scoring. This, unlike the Trevor Lawrence nonsense we saw last week, was the right decision.
49ers 24, Broncos 14
If you like punts, you were a fan of this game. Both the Broncos and 49ers mustered a field goal each in the first half, but otherwise just punted the entire time.
The one eventful thing that occurred in the first half was Patrick Surtain suffering an ankle injury just prior to intermission. He had to be helped off the field. Riley Moss and Pat Bryant were also knocked out with injuries.
Still, it looked like there would be more punts to be had in the second half until the Broncos made a crucial mistake. Marvin Mims fumbled a punt return, although it looked like his forearm was down. The announcers believed that to be true, but replay review allowed the play to stand for some reason. A bit later, Deebo Samuel scored a touchdown to put the 49ers up 10-3.
Bo Nix was able to engineer a touchdown drive on the ensuing possession despite Bryant getting hurt at that moment. With a two-point conversion, Denver drew to within three and needed a stop with four minutes remaining.
Instead, the opposite occurred. Brock Purdy threw a short pass to George Kittle, who received some great blocking and was able to go the distance for a 56-yard touchdown reception to ice the game.
Seahawks 30, Chargers 23
The Chargers nearly beat the Bills last week, but still lost by eight despite getting five turnovers from Buffalo. They were likely to see a more focused opponent in this game, given that Seattle had an embarrassing loss to the Redskins. As it so happens, the Seahawks were able to dominate the Chargers in a blowout victory.
Both teams made mistakes early, as Justin Herbert and Sam Darnold were intercepted on the first two offensive plays of the game. However, the Seahawks played cleanly after that. The Chargers, conversely, muffed a punt, setting up an Emanuel Wilson touchdown catch for the Seahawks to go up 7-3.
The Chargers' mistakes continued, with their receivers dropping three passes in the first quarter alone, including a Ladd McConkey drop on third down. Herbert wasn't blameless, however, as he threw an interception right to Ernest Jones. The announcer screamed, "Ernest Jones didn't have to move!"
By the middle of the third quarter, Herbert was a ghastly 5-of-14 for 36 yards and two interceptions. The Seahawks, meanwhile, were able to capitalize on all of the Chargers' mistakes, opening up a 27-6 lead by the middle of the third quarter. Adding injury to insult, McConkey was knocked out of the game.
The Chargers were down 30-13 entering the fourth quarter when some bizarre things began happening. Oronde Gadsden II double-caught a pass on fourth down off a deflection, setting up a touchdown for Kimani Vidal.
On the ensuing possession, Herbert threw a 44-yard bomb on fourth-and-7 to Quentin Johnston and then had a 21-yard connection to Tre Harris. The Chargers decided to kick a field goal on first down to push the game.
Los Angeles could have gotten the ball back, but hit Darnold late out of bounds. The team eventually did regain possession, but didn't have enough time and had to hurry. As a result, Herbert lost a fumble on a strip-sack.
Panthers 32, Lions 26
The Panthers entered this game as four-point underdogs, but no one informed Bryce Young of that. Young had an amazing start to this contest. If you remove a pass thrown away due to pressure, he completed his first 12 attempts. Detroit had no answer for Tetairoa McMillan, who kept getting open over and over again.
The only thing that went wrong for the Panthers in the early going was two missed extra points. They were up 22-16 in the third quarter, but should have been up by eight instead. This was significant when Isaac TeSlaa made a huge catch downfield in the middle of the third quarter, but the Lions managed just a field goal. The Panthers answered with an 85-yard drive where Young got his team into the red zone, and then Chuba Hubbard capitalized with a nice run to put the Panthers up 10.
The Lions were stuck down two scores for most of the fourth quarter. They moved the ball into the red zone a couple of times, but their first trip failed due to a turnover on downs, which was a result of two pre-snap penalties. Detroit entered the red zone once again on the next possession, and it looked like they were going to get stopped because of another pre-snap penalty. However, Goff located Sam LaPorta in the end zone to draw to within six.
Detroit had to get off the field on the ensuing Carolina drive, but Young converted a third-and-long situation on a pass to McMillan, who made a great catch near the sideline where he tiptoed inbounds before falling out of play.
The Lions did eventually get the ball back, but didn't have much time. They seemingly panicked and tried some downfield throws, but went four-and-out to give the Panthers the victory.
Falcons 45, Saints 24
Twenty years ago, the Saints reopened the Superdome in the wake of Hurricane Katrina's devastation. They were home underdogs to the Michael Vick-led Falcons, but Steve Gleason blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown, and the rest is history. New Orleans nearly shut out the Falcons, winning 23-3, as there was a flood of emotion from the crowd.
Some were expecting a similar level of energy from the Saints in this game against the same opponent 20 years later, but that did not occur. Instead, the Saints were completely flat in this contest on both sides of the ball.
The game was basically over as soon as it began. Bijan Robinson scored a 59-yard touchdown on the opening drive. Following a Saints missed field goal and a Kendre Miller fumble, the Saints committed a holding penalty on fourth down, and then Robinson scored once again to make it 14-0.
Both Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson trampled the Saints all night. The two runners combined for more than 200 rushing yards and five total touchdowns. The lifeless Saints looked pathetic trying to stop them, and Michael Penix was able to benefit from some great runs. Penix had Drake London and Kyle Pitts open downfield all night.
When the Saints had the ball, they couldn't do anything. Tyler Shough was pressured all night by Atlanta's defensive line. There was some hope at the beginning of the third quarter when Shough put a long drive together, but the Saints stalled in the red zone. They decided to kick a short field goal, down 24-7, which was unacceptable. They took too much time on the drive to get only three points.
That field goal drained whatever little life the Saints had remaining out of the stadium, and the Falcons took over and scored right away. That pretty much ended the game, save for a few garbage-time touchdowns from both teams.
