2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** THIS IS A LIVE 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT. PICKS ARE BEING POSTED NOW. TO SEE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, CHECK OUT THE ARCHIVED 2013 NFL MOCK DRAFT SECTION. FOLLOW @walterfootball FOR UPDATES ***

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent. He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Bryan Stork, C

  2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Cameron Erving, OT, Florida State
Left tackle may not seem like an obvious need to outside observers, but the Buccaneers are incredibly frustrated with Donald Penn. Josh Freeman’s current blind-side protector is once again dealing with weight issues. As a consequence, he struggles immensely in the preseason. Penn is due more than $6 million next year, so Tampa Bay could dump him in favor of a younger option.

Pick change; previously A.J. McCarron, QB

  3. Oakland Raiders: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
Like the Jaguars, the Raiders will be faced with a running back heading for the market. Darren McFadden will probably head elsewhere.

Pick change; previously Brandon Coleman, WR

  4. Cleveland Browns: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
The Browns desperately need an upgrade over Buster Skrine, who’s currently starting across from Joe Haden.

Pick change; previously Donte Moncrief, WR

  5. St. Louis Rams: HaHa Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama
The Rams drafted T.J. McDonald back in April, but they’ll have to find another safety upgrade sometime soon. St. Louis couldn’t do anything to stop Matt Ryan even though Roddy White and Steven Jackson were limited.

Pick change; previously Cyril Richardson, G/OT

  6. Minnesota Vikings: A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama
The Vikings didn’t find a young quarterback this offseason because they didn’t want to hurt Christian Ponder’s confidence. However, if Ponder stinks again – he was awful in the opener and inconsistent at Chicago – Minnesota may look into drafting a young signal-caller.

Pick change; previously David Fales, QB

  7. Buffalo Bills: Craig Loston, S, LSU
It seems as though a divorce is coming between Jairus Byrd and the Bills. If Byrd walks next offseason, Buffalo will obviously need help at safety.

  8. New York Jets: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Jets have a nice interior pass rush with Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson, but they could use an upgrade across from Quinton Coples.

Pick change; previously Josh Huff, WR

  9. New York Giants: Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State
The Giants have one of the worst linebacking corps in the NFL. Something must be done about this.

  10. Washington Redskins: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
The Redskins have the worst defense in the NFL. They looked completely helpless against the Packers. Help is needed everywhere. DeAngelo Hall won’t be around much longer.

Pick change; previously Loucheiz Purifoy, CB

  11. Pittsburgh Steelers: Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers
Offensive line is Pittsburgh’s most obvious need, but the front office has to give Ben Roethlisberger another weapon.

Pick change; previously Cameron Erving, OT

  12. Philadelphia Eagles: Josh Huff, WR, Oregon
Jeremy Maclin, who is entering his contract year, tore his ACL prior to the season. Maclin hasn’t been able to stay healthy throughout his career, so the Eagles may want to search for a new No. 2 receiver next offseason.

Pick change; previously Johnny Manziel, QB

  13. Arizona Cardinals: Stephen Morris, QB, Miami
If the Cardinals are drafting 13th overall, it means that the Carson Palmer experiment didn’t go as well as planned. In that case, they’d consider a quarterback in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Stephen Morris would fit perfectly in Arizona’s offense.

  14. Carolina Panthers: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
The Panthers went back-to-back defensive tackles this past April, so they could definitely do the same thing at the cornerback position (if they go with a corner in the first round) considering the circumstances.

Pick change; previously Darqueze Dennard, CB

  15. Tennessee Titans: Quandre Diggs, CB, Texas
Alterraun Verner is entering his contract year, so Tennessee will need a new starter if it can’t retain him. Besides, the Titans need to bolster their pass defense.

Pick change; previously Trent Murphy, DE

  16. Indianapolis Colts: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor
Jim Irsay took to Twitter recently and demanded better protection for Andrew Luck. I suppose that means the Colts will drafting a lineman or two early.

Pick change; previously Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT

  17. Detroit Lions: Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
Dominic Raiola has seemingly been on Detroit’s roster forever, but he’ll be a 35-year-old free agent in March. The Lions will probably bring in a new center.

Pick change; previously Ty Zimmerman, S

  18. San Diego Chargers: De’Anthony Thomas, RB, Oregon
The Chargers signed Danny Woodhead to be their third-down back, but I’m not sure he’ll work outside of New England’s system. Philip Rivers needs a true replacement for Darren Sproles. De’Anthony Thomas would definitely work.

  19. Houston Texans: David Fales, QB, San Jose State
If Matt Schaub disappoints yet again, the Texans will be tempted to grab one of the talented quarterbacks in this class during the first two days of the draft.

Pick change; previously Jeoffrey Pagan, DE/DT

  20. Atlanta Falcons: Will Sutton, DE/DT, Arizona State
The Falcons didn’t address defensive tackle even though they have a hole there next to Jonathan Babineaux. Peria Jerry will be given one more chance to prove himself. He has done nothing thus far.

  21. San Francisco 49ers: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The 49ers will need a successor for Justin Smith (Tank Carradine, maybe?) and also some depth on the defensive line.

Pick change; previously Odell Beckham, WR

  22. Miami Dolphins: Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
The Dolphins signed Dustin Keller this offseason, but he went on to tear his ACL, MCL and PCL in the preseason. They’ll have to find a new tight end.

  23. Dallas Cowboys: Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas
George Selvie has done a great job of replacing Anthony Spencer, who will be gone this offseason. The Cowboys will need a third pass-rusher for depth once Spencer leaves.

  24. Chicago Bears: Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State
Henry Melton, an impending free agent, just tore his ACL. This could make it easier for the Bears to keep him, but they’ll need a replacement if he walks.

Pick change; previously Odell Beckham, WR

  25. Baltimore Ravens: Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon
Dennis Pitta just suffered a brutal hip injury that could downgrade his effectiveness in the 2014 season. Ed Dickson, meanwhile, is an impending free agent. He sucks anyway, as does Dallas Clark.

  26. Cincinnati Bengals: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
The Bengals don’t have much at center, as Kyle Cook beat out Trevor Robinson in an underwhelming camp battle.

  27. Green Bay Packers: Ty Zimmerman, S, Kansas State
The Packers have suffered through horrid safety play thus far this season. That’ll need to improve considering the quarterbacks in their division.

Pick change; previously Morgan Breslin, DE/OLB

  28. New Orleans Saints: Ed Stinson, DE/DT, Alabama
I mocked Sheldon Richardson to the Saints a couple of times last spring because they happen to be thin at defensive end in their new 3-4. That’s still the case.

Pick change; previously Henry Anderson, DE/DT

  29. New England Patriots: Michael Dyer, RB, Louisville
The Patriots, as we all know, like to take chances on troubled players. Michael Dyer would be a consensus first-round pick if he had a clean off-the-field history. New England may bring him in if Stevan Ridley’s fumbling problems persist.

  30. San Francisco 49ers: Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers need a speed receiver to complement Michael Crabtree.

Pick change; previously Quandre Diggs, CB

  31. Denver Broncos: Henry Anderson, DE/DT, Stanford
The Broncos could be looking for more help at defensive tackle because they don’t have much of an interior pass rush.

Pick change; previously Timmy Jernigan, DT

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
The Seahawks have multiple areas of concern on their offensive line, including both guard spots. Imagine how potent Russell Wilson would be with upgraded protection.
