2012 NFL Mock Re-Draft: Round 3

Last update: Friday, April 27, 2012, 5:40 p.m.
This is a 2012 NFL Mock Re-Draft of Rounds 2 and 3 for Friday evening's NFL Draft coverage. With all of the trades that will go down, I don't expect to get many of these right (I nailed five in my Re-Draft Round 2 last year), but it's still fun to speculate where the top prospects will go on Day 2 of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

  1. Indianapolis Colts: Alameda Ta'amu, NT, Washington
The Colts are switching to a 3-4, and because the old regime favored smaller defensive linemen, the only player who can step in at nose tackle is 310-pound Antonio Johnson.

  2. St. Louis Rams: Sean Spence, OLB, Miami
The Rams are really thin at linebacker, so they'll probably spend multiple draft picks replenishing depth and/or finding future starters.

  3. Minnesota Vikings: Marvin McNutt, WR, Iowa
The Vikings did a great job of finding someone to protect Christian Ponder. Now, they'll need to give their quarterback someone to throw to.

  4. Cleveland Browns: Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska
As discussed many times this offseason, the Browns need a third linebacker. Lavonte David is too good to pass up.

  5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ron Brooks, CB, LSU
Hey, looks like the Buccaneers were able to land a cornerback of LSU after all.

  6. Washington Redskins: Donald Stephenson, OT, Oklahoma
Washington should look into adding an insurance policy at right tackle because Jammal Brown can't seem to get healthy. His hip injury just won't go away.

  7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Tyrone Crawford, DE, Boise State
The Jaguars will have to spend a Round 2-4 selection on a defensive end if they don't pick Melvin Ingram at No. 7.

  8. Buffalo Bills: Brian Quick, WR, Appalachian State
The Bills paid a ton of money to Ryan Fitzpatrick last season, so they need to find him some help across from Steve Johnson. Neither Donald Jones nor David Nelson is a capable No. 2 wideout. Brian Quick is a receiver who seems like a great fit for Chan Gailey's offense.

  9. Miami Dolphins: Brandon Taylor, S, LSU
The Dolphins recently released Yeremiah Bell. Mark Barron was discussed as a fallback option at No. 8, so Brandon Taylor could be considered in Round 3.

  10. Miami Dolphins: Chris Givens, WR, Wake Forest
Another weapon for Ryan Tannehill. The Dolphins acquired this selection by trading away Brandon Marshall. Why not take a receiver to replace him?

  11. Kansas City Chiefs: George Iloka, S, Boise State
When asked in a recent interview what the second-most important position is in football (behind quarterback), Romeo Crennel said: "safety." It sounds crazy, but safeties are very important in his defensive scheme. He likes using three on the field at most times.

  12. Seattle Seahawks: Chris Polk, RB, Washington
If the Vikings can use a second-round pick on Toby Gerhart with Adrian Peterson on the roster, then Seattle sure as hell can draft a runner here even though Marshawn Lynch has been re-signed. Lynch's running style makes him vulnerable to injury, so the Seahawks need depth at the position.

  13. Houston Texans: Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin
The Texans won't draft a receiver in the first round, but they'll definitely be searching for one on Day 2.

  14. New York Jets: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
The Jets need to find some help for Tim Tebow. Chaz Schilens is one of their starting receivers. Chaz Schilens!

  15. San Diego Chargers: LaMichael James, RB, Oregon
The only running backs on San Diego's current roster are Ryan Mathews, Curtis Brinkley and fullback LeRon McClain. Mathews hasn't been able to stay healthy, so the Chargers will look into spending an early selection on some insurance.

  16. Chicago Bears: Jamell Fleming, CB, Oklahoma
The Bears were able to re-sign Tim Jennings, but they still need help at cornerback. Dwight Bentley is one of the top players available.

  17. Arizona Cardinals: Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech
The Cardinals could use some depth at corner, and they've shown interest in Jayron Hosley, despite his drug use.

  18. Dallas Cowboys: Ronnell Lewis, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
Anthony Spencer has been franchised, but that won't keep the Cowboys from spending a Day 2 selection on a rush linebacker. Spencer has severe consistency issues.

  19. Tennessee Titans: Dwight Bentley, CB, Louisiana-Lafayette
Cortland Finnegan is gone. The Titans don't need a starting corner, but they have to replenish depth.

  20. Cincinnati Bengals: Isaiah Pead, RB, Cincinnati
The Bengals really need to find a running back sometime on Friday.

  21. Atlanta Falcons: Ladarius Green, TE, Louisiana-Lafayette
The Falcons will probably find a successor for Tony Gonzalez sometime this offseason. Ladarius Green is a good fit in this spot.

  22. Detroit Lions: Josh Norman, CB, Coastal Carolina
How many years has it been since the Lions have had great cornerback play? Five? Ten? Ten thousand? For the sake of the fans, I hope the front office addresses this need.

  23. Pittsburgh Steelers: Bernard Pierce, RB, Temple
Coming off a torn ACL, Rashard Mendenhall will be entering his contract year in 2012. The Steelers should have an alternative option at the ready just in case they decide not to retain Mendenhall.

  24. Denver Broncos: Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona State
Tim Tebow-san is gone, so I imagine that John Kreese Elway and Johnny Lawrence Fox will be looking for a young quarterback to groom behind Peyton Manning.

  25. Philadelphia Eagles: Jeff Allen, OT, Illinois
The Eagles signed Demetress Bell as insurance for Jason Peters, but that was essentially a 1-year contract. They should probably spend an early pick on a developmental tackle just in case Bell busts and Peters can't return to form.

  26. New Orleans Saints: Billy Winn, DE/DT, Boise State
The Saints found their nose tackle in Brodrick Bunkley, but they still need a pass-rushing presence in the interior of their defensive line.

  27. Green Bay Packers: Antonio Allen, S, South Carolina
The Packers passed on Harrison Smith in Round 1, so they'll need to find a replacement for Nick Collins sometime on Friday.

  28. Baltimore Ravens: Cam Johnson, DE/OLB, Virginia
As good as the Ravens' defense is, they only have one player who can consistently get to the quarterback. Both Pittsburgh and Baltimore will consider Cam Johnson in Round 3.

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Jared Crick, DE/DT, Nebraska
The 49ers take one of the top players available to fill their need for defensive end depth behind Justin Smith and Ray McDonald.

  30. Cincinnati Bengals: Markelle Martin, S, Oklahoma State
Taylor Mays is currently slated to start at strong safety. The Bengals need competition there.

  31. New York Giants: James Brown, OT, Troy
The Giants need a tackle behind the injury-prone William Beatty and unproven James Brewer.

  32. Oakland Raiders: Josh Chapman, NT, Alabama
The Raiders want a larger defensive tackle. Josh Chapman would go a lot higher than this if it weren't for injury concerns.

Seriously? You know they have one starting CB right, and just drafted a tackle right? And still have two starting tackles on their roster right?

Agree with MJB - the Steelers have pressing needs at ILB and NT. Farrior is gone and Foote sucks. Hampton is on the 17th hole of the back 9. I understand that Massie would be an upgrade to that waste Colon, but for some reason the Steelers have always been enamored of Colon and won't pull the trigger on an OT in the 2nd. Possibly in the later rounds though.

BOLD Prediction 1: 5 WR in 1st round...I tanked that one. I needed one more. BOLD Prediction 2: Jax Jags move up to get Blackmon...Nailed. New BOLD Prediction: Detroit Trades Chelius 2nd Pick and 7th pick to St Louis to move up to get Josh Robinson at 33...and they take another CB in the Third Round.

I can't see the Steelers passing on Mychal Kendricks for an OT if he is available. I know they need players on the line but its more pressing to find youth on that aging LB group.
