Rank: 11 Previously: 6
C.J. Stroud has regressed each season. He’s been fortunate to have a great defense carry him, but the decline is alarming. Stroud is reportedly eating just lean meat and vegetables this offseason, which sounds great until you realize that it’s not going to help him read defenses.

Walt’s Team Needs Assessment

Needs
The Texans seemed as if they were in for a long season when they began 0-3. However, they went on a long winning streak to close out the season, becoming the No. 5 seed in the process.
  • Two Guards: The alternative is a guard and a right tackle, which would move Tytus Howard inside. The Texans will need two non-left tackle, non-center upgrades on the offensive line to give C.J. Stroud a chance against teams with strong pass rushes. Ed Ingram being re-signed would take care of one of these needs. Signed Wyatt Teller; re-signed Ed Ingram
  • Right Tackle: It’s unclear why the Texans traded Tytus Howard, but they now need a new tackle. Signed Braden Smith
  • Running Back: Woody Marks was better than Nick Chubb, but he doesn’t profile as an every-down back who can carry the full workload. Traded for David Montgomery
  • Center: Jake Andrews didn’t play well overall last year as Houston’s starting center, though it should be noted that he improved down the stretch. Signed Evan Brown
  • Linebacker: If there’s a weakness to Houston’s defense, it’s the linebackers’ ability to cover the middle of the field. The Texans could use a better starter next to Azeez Al-Shaair.
  • Punter: Tommy Townsend is coming off a solid year, but he’s set to enter free agency. Traded for Kai Kroeger

Walt’s 2026 NFL Draft – Overall Team Grade and Selection Grades

Draft Review
Walt’s Draft Grade: D Grade
Walt’s Grade Summary
Houston addressed the offensive line in the first round, but it certainly didn’t take the best player available. Keylan Rutledge as a second-round prospect, yet the Texans moved up a couple of spots to draft him. This did not make any sense, and neither did squandering a second-round pick on tight end Marlin Klein, who was considered a fourth-round prospect.

It wasn’t all negative for the Texans during the first two days because Kayden McDonald was a steal atop Day 2. However, Houston continued to make horrible selections on the third day. Febechi Nwaiwu was a slight reach, while fourth-rounder Wade Woodaz was someone I didn’t have being drafted. I liked the Kamari Ramsey and Aidan Fisher selections, but there were far too many negatives for Houston.

I recommended that the Texans take the best players available. In far too many instances, however, it felt like they were eager to draft the worst players available.

Draft Picks / Prospect Links
Pick 26
C-
Keylan Rutledge, G, Georgia Tech
G Georgia Tech
The Texans moved up for Keylan Rutledge? Why? They easily could have gotten him two picks later because he’s a second-round prospect. Rutledge is a monster in the running game, but pass protection could be an issue, which is not ideal with C.J. Stroud regressing each year. But hey, at least the Texans used draft capital to move up for someone who can help a 29-year-old running back get more yards.
Pick 36
A
Kayden McDonald, DT, Ohio State
Kayden McDonald, DT, Ohio State
DT Ohio State
Kayden McDonald is a first-round prospect who fell to the second frame. This is great value for the Texans, who needed to address the interior of their defensive line. They also smartly leapfrogged the Giants, who had planned on selecting a defensive tackle like McDonald.
Pick 59
C-
Marlin Klein, TE, Michigan
TE Michigan
Rnk: 325
We’re seeing tight end reaches in Round 2. Marlin Klein is a reach, as I had him going in the fourth round. He’s a speedy tight end, but was never productive at Michigan. Houston could have waited a bit longer to get him.
Pick 106
C
Febechi Nwaiwu, G, Oklahoma
G Oklahoma
Rnk: 389
I had Febechi Nwaiwu in the fifth round. He’s not very quick, and he’s not a good run blocker. He is versatile, but the Texans could’ve made a better selection.
Pick 123
D
Wade Woodaz, LB, Clemson
LB Clemson
Rnk: 0
I didn’t have Wade Woodaz being drafted. In fact, I didn’t have him as a top-400 prospect. He’s a speedy linebacker, but mostly a special-teamer. The Texans could’ve made this pick two rounds later.
Pick 141
A
Kamari Ramsey, S, USC
Kamari Ramsey, S, USC
S USC
Kamari Ramsey has excellent coverage skills. I thought he could have gone two rounds earlier than this, so the Texans are getting a great value atop Round 5. Follow @walterfootball for updates. Also, if you haven’t visited the site in a while, you may have noticed the new look. Yes, after nearly two decades, we’ve finally re-designed our site to be more modern. This was not done on a whim, but rather out of necessity because of what occurred during the 2023 NFL Draft. Our site crashed during the entire first day of the draft, which was disastrous for our revenue stream because we make more money during the draft than any other time. The site crashed because a line of code conflicted with the old format of the site, so we had to transition to this new look. Because we lost so much money during the draft, I want to point out that you can really help support the site by paying for the ad-free version of it. It’s $7.99 per month, but you’ll get a super-fast site with no ads. My developer will be adding new features to paid subscribers as well, so look for that in the near future. If you don’t want to pay, please spread the word about the site through word of mouth. That would also be a big help!
Pick 204
C
Lewis Bond, WR, Boston College
WR Boston College
Rnk: 482
Lewis Bond was very productive at Boston College. He’s light, but he’s a good route runner. I didn’t have him being drafted, so I’m not a big fan of this pick.
Pick 243
A-
Aidan Fisher, LB, Indiana
LB Indiana
Rnk: 99
Aidan Fisher is an instinctive linebacker, but has some limitations for the NFL. Fisher figures to be a quality backup and special teamer in the NFL. He could have gone much earlier than this.
