Can the 49ers finally avoid injuries this year? Perhaps, but George Kittle is already hurt, while Mike Evans and Ricky Pearsall are always banged up. Then, of course, there’s Christian McCaffrey, who is coming off a season in which he led the NFL in carries, so he’s bound to miss some time. If, however, all of the essential 49ers can remain on the field, the sky is the limit.

Walt’s Team Needs Assessment
Needs
The 49ers had one of the most explosive offenses in 2025, but their defense was a disaster. With no pass rush, they weren’t able to generate any sort of pressure. Nick Bosa returning will obviously help, but San Francisco needs more talent on its stop unit.
- Two Defensive Tackles: The 49ers need defensive line help more than anything. Interior defensive help must be acquired. Two players are needed at the position. Traded for Osa Odighizuwa
- Defensive End: The 49ers had the fifth-worst pressure rate in the NFL last year. Another defensive end will help fix that.
- Two Cornerbacks: San Francisco’s cornerback play has been lackluster. Part of that has to do with the poor pass rush, but the talent isn’t really there at the position.
- Two Wide Receivers: Brandon Aiyuk is as good as gone, so the 49ers will need a new No. 1 receiver to go along Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings, if he’s re-signed. If Jennings leaves, a second receiver will be needed. Signed Mike Evans and Christian Kirk
- Safety: This position isn’t a huge need, but an upgrade wouldn’t hurt.
- Kicker: Eddy Pineiro is an impending free agent.
- Punter: Thomas Morstead had one of the worst net averages in the NFL last year.
Walt’s 2026 NFL Draft – Overall Team Grade and Selection Grades
Draft Review
Walt’s Draft Grade:
MILLEN Grade
Walt’s Grade Summary
I received a text during the weekend that said, “I don’t think John Lynch prepared for the draft.” If he did, we certainly saw no evidence of that in a disastrous performance for San Francisco.
Things started off well for the 49ers, who moved out of the first round to pick up some draft capital. They received calls for the No. 33 pick throughout Friday, but opted not to trade the pick. They definitely should have because they used it on third-round prospect De’Zhaun Stribling. This was just the beginning of the disastrous weekend for Lynch. I didn’t mind the Romello Height pick like others did, but selecting Kaelon Black in the third round when everyone was passing on running backs seemed irresponsible. The 49es didn’t even need a running back, as they could have continued to bolster their weak defense.
Lynch kicked Day 3 off on a positive note with Gracen Halton to improve the defensive interior, but conducted a series of reaches after that. The worst pick as fifth-rounder Jaen Dugger, who wasn’t even listed in my top 400.
The 49ers deserve a Millen grade for this debacle. They made very minimal upgrades to their roster and spent too many picks on unnecessary positions.

Draft Picks / Prospect Links
Pick 33
MILLEN
De’Zhaun Stribling, WR, Ole Miss
WR
Ole Miss
Rnk: 181
The 49ers had all day to trade down, and they should have done so because they wasted the No. 33 pick on a third-round prospect. De’Zhaun Stribling has some big-play ability, but he probably would have been available 20 picks later. Why not trade down and get some capital, even if it’s not at full value?
Pick 70
B
Romello Height, DE, Texas Tech
DE
Texas Tech
Rnk: 81
I got a text from someone saying, “I don’t think John Lynch prepared for this draft.” This pick is at least a decent one. I had Romello Height going in this range, and he potentially fills a big need for a team that couldn’t get after the quarterback last year
Pick 90
B
Kaelon Black, RB, Indiana
RB
Indiana
Rnk: 120
Kyle Shanahan drafted a running back. Surprise, surprise! I had Kaelon Black going in this area, as he’s a player who’s a quick, powerful runner. I’m intrigued to see what Kyle Shanahan can do with Black, and it’s not out of the question that he could be a starter down the road.
Pick 107
A-
Gracen Halton, DT, Oklahoma
DT
Oklahoma
Rnk: 135
The 49ers finally make a decent pick. Gracen Halton is an interior pass rusher and a disruptor. The 49ers had a huge weakness here, and Halton could’ve been taken in Round 3 with no issues.
Pick 127
C+
Carver Willis, OT, Washington
OT
Washington
Rnk: 440
A successor for Trent Williams in a few years? Maybe, but probably not. I had Carver Willis in the seventh round. Willis improved throughout his collegiate career, but needs to get stronger for the pros. He’s a project.
Pick 139
C
Ephesians Prysock, CB, Washington
CB
Washington
Rnk: 187
Ephesians Prysock is a tall and lenghty cornerback who can match up with big wide receivers. He’s pretty stiff though, so I had him going in the seventh round. The 49ers are not drafting for value this year.
Pick 154
MILLEN
Jaden Dugger, LB, Louisiana
LB
Louisiana
Rnk: 516
I didn’t have Jaden Dugger as a draftable player, or even a priority UDFA. He was not in my top 400. This is an embarrassing pick.
Pick 179
D
Enrique Cruz Jr., OT, Kansas
OT
Kansas
Rnk: 0
Enrique Cruz Jr. is an athletic offensive tackle, but has short arms and may have to move to guard. I didn’t have Cruz in my top-400 prospects, so he was nowhere near my mock draft, but at least the 49ers are taking someone with a bit of upside.
