NFL Power Rankings Week 12: Lions Move Past the Chiefs

Amon-Ra St. Brown
My current NFL Power Rankings of the 2024 NFL season for Week 12. The Lions move past the Chiefs.

I’m going to use these rankings as the order for my 2025 NFL Mock Draft during the early stages of the 2024 season. Follow @walterfootball.

NFL Power Rankings updated Nov. 19, 2024

  1. Detroit Lions NFL Power Rankings Detroit Lions (9-1) – Previously: 2.
What the Lions did in the second half against the Texans had Super Bowl winner vibes. They didn’t win these games last year when they fell behind the Packers and Bears late in the season, but they fought hard and prevailed. They then had a second bye week against the Jaguars in a get-rigt game for Jared Goff.

If you haven’t visited the site in a while, you may have noticed the new look. Yes, after nearly two decades, we’ve finally re-designed our site to be more modern. This was not done on a whim, but rather out of necessity because of what occurred during the 2023 NFL Draft. Our site crashed during the entire first day of the draft, which was disastrous for our revenue stream because we make more money during the draft than any other time. The site crashed because a line of code conflicted with the old format of the site, so we had to transition to this new look.

Because we lost so much money during the draft, I want to point out that you can really help support the site by paying for the ad-free version of it. It’s $7.99 per month, but you’ll get a super-fast site with no ads. My developer will be adding new features to paid subscribers as well, so look for that in the near future. If you don’t want to pay, please spread the word about the site through word of mouth. That would also be a big help!

  2. Buffalo Bills Buffalo Bills (9-2) – Previously: 5.
The Bills beat the Chiefs, and yet they didn’t even have Matt Milano back in the lineup yet. Buffalo’s defense is going to be dominant when Milano is 100 percent.

  3. Philadelphia Eagles Philadelphia Eagles (8-2) – Previously: 3.
I wrote almost two months ago that I thought there was a good chance the Eagles would get their crap together and perform much better in the second half of the season. They had too much talent to perform as poorly as they did to start the season. The Eagles have now won six in a row to improve to 8-2. They’re looking great, as they have terrific offensive firepower and the league’s No. 1 EPA defense.

  4. Kansas City Chiefs NFL Power Rankings Kansas City Chiefs (9-1) – Previously: 1.
The Chiefs losing could be a blessing in disguise. They have some problems they need to fix, but if they kept on winning, they may not have addressed those issues.

  5. Baltimore Ravens Baltimore Ravens (7-4) – Previously: 4.
It was odd to see a John Harbaugh-coached team struggle with so many mistakes. Every time you looked up, the Ravens were either committing a penalty, dropping a pass, or turning over the ball.

  6. Los Angeles Chargers San Angeles Chargers (7-3) – Previously: 9.
No one can say that the Chargers haven’t battled talented quarterbacks anymore. They dominated the Bengals in the first half, then were able to win a close game after a late Cincinnati surge.

  7. Green Bay Packers Green Bay Packers (7-3) – Previously: 6.
“No Cookie” Jordan Love and Christian Watson are both healthy now, just like they were late last year. We’ll see how long that lasts, but the Packers can beat anyone when they’re at 100 percent.

  8. Pittsburgh Steelers Pittsburgh Steelers (8-2) – Previously: 10.
The Steelers are in great shape at 8-2, but they have to battle the Bengals twice, Ravens, Chiefs, and Eagles to close out the season. Their offensive line nearly sabotaged their win against the Ravens.

  9. Washington Redskins Washington Redskins (7-4) – Previously: 7.
The Redskins aren’t ready to compete with the big boys yet. They’ll be like the Texans last year. They’ll make the playoffs and perhaps win in the first round until losing to one of the top teams. Jayden Daniels needs another receiver and better tackle play.

  10. San Francisco 49ers San Francisco 49ers (5-5) – Previously: 8.
The writing should have been on the wall for the 49ers losing to the Seahawks when they beat the Buccaneers by only three points after outgaining them 413-215 and averaging 3.1 more yards per play. The 49ers continued to suck with horrible red zone offense and awful in-game management by Kyle Shanahan.

  11. Arizona Cardinals Arizona Cardinals (6-4) – Previously: 11.
Arizona’s opponents heading into Week 8: Bills, Rams (when Cooper Kupp played), Lions, Redskins, 49ers, Packers, Chargers. How tough is that? Despite that gauntlet, they’re 6-4. They’ll have easier games down the stretch, which should put them in a great position to win the division.

  12. Los Angeles Rams Los Angeles Rams (5-5) – Previously: 12.
The Rams made so many mistakes Monday night. They needed to rebound from those errors to save their season, and they did just that against the Patriots. They won by just six, but they were up comfortably at one point, 28-13.

  13. Minnesota Vikings Minnesota Vikings (8-2) – Previously: 13.
Remember when people talked about Sam Darnold as an MVP candidate? Well, they were right. He’s the MVP for the sportsbooks. His three interceptions allowed the Jaguars to cover despite the Vikings outgaining Jacksonville, 402-143. Darnold rebounded well in the next game, however. He didn’t throw an interception in a 23-13 victory. He lost a fumble on a strip-sack, but that play was negated by illegal contact.

  14. Miami Dolphins Miami Dolphins (4-6) – Previously: 15.
The Dolphins kept the game against the Bills close, but they had yet another loss to a winning team. They simply cannot beat quality opponents, and given how much Mike McDaniel has been exposed this year, it’s easy to see why. They kept their season alive against the Rams and Raiders, but it’s fair to be skeptical of them being able to beat bad teams.

  15. Denver Broncos Denver Broncos (6-5) – Previously: 18.
Sean Payton sounded like a crazy loon when he referred to Bo Nix as the best quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft class. Jayden Daniels has been amazing, but hats off to Nix for an unbelievable performance against the Falcons.

  16. Houston Texans Houston Texans (7-4) – Previously: 14.
The Texans won by 24 in Dallas, but didn’t have the most convincing victory. C.J. Stroud did not play well despite Nico Collins’ return, so Houston needs to get him right with the playoffs approaching soon.

  17. Cincinnati Bengals Cincinnati Bengals (4-7) – Previously: 17.
“Zac Taylor continues to blow leads with stupid in-game decision-making.” I wrote this last week, and I can just leave it. In fact, I probably can just keep this here for the rest of the year.

  18. Atlanta Falcons Atlanta Falcons (6-5) – Previously: 16.
Wow, 38-6? What the hell was that!? I guess the good news is that the Falcons have a bye coming up to figure out what’s wrong.

  19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-6) – Previously: 19.
I’d worry about the Buccaneers running out of gas after playing two very close games against the Super Bowl participants from a year ago, but they’ll be on bye in Week 11.

  20. Indianapolis Colts Indianapolis Colts (5-6) – Previously: 21.
The Colts deserve some credit for admitting their mistake and going back to Anthony Richardson. Joe Flacco was a disaster with his interceptions last week. Richardson was much better against the Jets.

  21. Seattle Seahawks Seattle Seahawks (5-5) – Previously: 22.
I’d like to give credit to the Seahawks for winning in San Francisco, but the 49ers were responsible for the loss. Nick Bosa’s injury didn’t help, but San Francisco threw away a potential victory with dumb coaching decisions and blunders.

  22. Chicago Bears Chicago Bears (4-6) – Previously: 24.
The Bears humiliated themselves against the Patriots. They rebounded well against the Packers, as they were a blocked field goal away from beating Green Bay for the first time since 2018. Still, Caleb Williams showed improvement, which is the most important thing.

  23. New Orleans Saints New Orleans Saints (4-7) – Previously: 25.
I don’t understand how such an injury-ravaged team like the Saints won two games in a row, but they’re really hurting their long-term outlook by prevailing in these meaningless contests.

  24. New York Jets New York Jets (3-8) – Previously: 20.
The Jets fire Robert Saleh. They still lose. They trade for Davante Adams. They still lose. They get Haason Reddick to play. They still lose. Perhaps they just need to play on Thursdays because they’ve only won once on Sunday this season. I wrote that the loss to the Cardinals felt like a funeral for the team, and then things only got worse against the Colts. How did they fail to secure a first down in the first 28 minutes of the game?

  25. Cleveland Browns Cleveland Browns (2-8) – Previously: 23.
The Browns won their “Super Bowl” versus the Ravens. They’ve quit ever since. They were crushed by the Chargers, and then they forgot how to tackle against the Saints. It didn’t help that Dustin Hopkins was paid off by someone to miss every single kick attempt.

  26. New England Patriots New England Patriots (3-8) – Previously: 27.
Drake Maye continues to look good, but he can’t overcome his horrible supporting cast. Check out my 2025 NFL Mock Draft to see whom New England can draft to build around Maye.

  27. Carolina Panthers Carolina Panthers (3-7) – Previously: 30.
The Panthers defense looked better this past week, perhaps because D.J. Wonnum returned to the lineup. Or, perhaps, it’s because the Giants are very poorly coached and quarterbacked.

  28. Tennessee Titans Tennessee Titans (2-8) – Previously: 26.
Will Levis continued to take bad sacks in the most recent loss. The Titans are now a week closer to figuring out which quarterback they will draft in April.

  29. New York Giants New York Giants (2-8) – Previously: 28.
I suggested that Giants ownership should send Brian Daboll home on a raft, but Slew had a better idea: “Send him east to Ukraine as special NFL emissary for Game in Ukraine 2025 – since he no longer has the title of head coach for the New York Football Giants.”

  30. Dallas Cowboys Dallas Cowboys (3-7) – Previously: 29.
Jerry Jones was going to fire Mike McCarthy last offseason, but someone talked him out of it. I hope that person talks him out of it again because Dallas’ incompetence with McCarthy is comedic gold.

  31. Las Vegas Raiders Las Vegas Raiders (2-8) – Previously: 31.
The Raiders were able to get back-door touchdowns against the Chiefs and Rams, but couldn’t get them against the Bengals and Dolphins. I really want them to go to Desmond Ridder so we can fade them blindly in the final seven weeks of the season.

  32. Jacksonville Jaguars Jacksonville Jaguars (2-9) – Previously: 32.
The Jaguars should just sit Trevor Lawrence the rest of the season. They can’t make the playoffs, so what’s the point in rushing him back from injury? They can get the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and then auction it off to the highest bidder. At any rate, the Jaguars are now the worst team in the NFL, assuming Lawrence doesn’t play any longer. They covered the spread against the Vikings, but they were outgained, 402-143. Things went back to normal in their 52-6 loss at Detroit.

2024 NFL MVP Projection:

1. Josh Allen, QB, Bills
2. Patrick Mahomes, QB, Chiefs
3. Lamar Jackson, QB, Ravens
4. Jared Goff, QB, Lions
5. Jalen Hurts, QB, Eagles
