2015 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Weeks of Aug. 17
Aug. 24
Reggie Wayne, WR, Patriots
Reggie Wayne has signed with New England, but I wouldn’t draft him at all. The Patriots have tried going with washed-up receivers before (see Joey Galloway, Torry Holt, Chad Ochocinco, etc.) and they’ve all failed. Wayne will be the latest disappointment, as he doesn’t have anything left in the tank. Besides, I don’t even like Tom Brady this year, so I’ll be shocked if Wayne emerges as a productive fantasy player.
Aug. 23
Philly Brown, WR, Panthers
The Panthers’ Web site recently published an article discussing how much Philly Brown has improved his route running. With Kelvin Benjamin hurt and Devin Funchess inexperienced (and banged up as well), there’s a big opportunity for Brown this year.
David Cobb, RB, Titans
ESPN Titans’ Paul Kuharsky has predicted that David Cobb will finish the year with more carries than Bishop Sankey. Kuharsky has been able to observe these backs in practice more than anyone, but it was evident how pedestrian Sankey looked in preseason action.
Bishop Sankey, RB, Titans
With David Cobb predicted to lead the Titans in carries, Bishop Sankey needs to drop in the rankings. Sankey has struggled in the preseason thus far, so his 2015 outlook already wasn’t very bright.
Aug. 22
Joseph Randle, RB, Cowboys
It was recently reported that Joseph Randle aggravated his oblique injury, but he returned to practice Friday and was running with the first team. Don’t hesitate to grab Randle as an RB2.
Maxx Williams, TE, Ravens
Maxx Williams has reportedly been upstaged in training camp by tight end Nick Boyle, according to the Baltimore Sun. Williams made an impressive play in the preseason opener, but was on the field with the practice-squad scrubs. That’s not good news for his 2015 outlook.
Aug. 21
David Johnson, RB, Cardinals
David Johnson has finally returned to practice, and by all accounts, he has looked great. Reportedly, no one has been able to cover Johnson at all. His ADP has dropped considerably in the wake of the Chris Johnson signing, so unlike before, David Johnson could be obtained for good value at this point.
Marqise Lee, WR, Jaguars
Marqise Lee is expected to miss two more weeks with a hamstring injury. Lee has been a huge disappointment this offseason, and he’s completely off the radar as a consequence.
Nick Toon, WR, Saints
Nick Toon had some hype earlier in the offseason, but he has since slipped to sixth on the wide receiver depth chart. He’s now no longer a late-round flier.
Aug. 20
Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Panthers
Kelvin Benjamin is out for the year with a torn ACL.
Philly Brown, WR, Panthers
Philly Brown could be the player to benefit most from Kelvin Benjamin’s season-ending injury. A rookie himself last year, Brown flashed toward the end of the 2014 campaign, so he could be a sneaky sleeper late in fantasy drafts.
Zach Ertz, TE, Eagles
Chip Kelly told the media that he expects Zach Ertz back for the season opener. Well, Kelly was apparently full of crap again when it came to diagnosing injuries, as a surgeon told CSN Philly that Ertz could miss Week 1. Either way, Ertz should be back at some point in September, making him a low-end TE1.
Devin Funchess, WR, Panthers
Devin Funchess wasn’t regarded highly in NFL Draft circles, but the Panthers spent a second-round choice on him. Cam Newton will have to rely more heavily on Funchess with Kelvin Benjamin gone for the year. I still don’t like him very much, but he’s now on 12-team fantasy radars.
Cam Newton, QB, Panthers
As I explained in my Disaster Grades, Cam Newton will struggle without Kelvin Benjamin because opposing defenses will be able to play closer to the line of scrimmage. This is the first time Newton won’t have a respected receiver at his disposal, so it’s hard to like his chances.
Greg Olsen, TE, Panthers
Bump up Greg Olsen in your rankings in the wake of Kelvin Benjamin’s season-ending injury. Olsen, coming off a career year, could improve his stats even more, now that Cam Newton will have to target him more frequently.
Jonathan Stewart, RB, Panthers
With Kelvin Benjamin out, Jonathan Stewart won’t have as much running room. He also won’t be in position to score as many touchdowns, given that Carolina’s offense won’t be as productive. I already had Stewart in my Fantasy Football Busts list, and now I like him even less.
Aug. 19
LeSean McCoy, RB, Bills
One day after Chet Gresham wrote an article on why you should avoid LeSean McCoy, the Buffalo running back was diagnosed with a hamstring injury and will be out for a few weeks. He could be ready for the opener, but soft-tissue maladies tend to linger. Let someone else pick up Shady.
Breshad Perriman, WR, Ravens
Breshad Perriman had a hot start to his offseason, but he hasn’t practiced in a while. He even just had an MRI on his knee, and the Ravens have expressed frustration about his inability to get healthy.
Richard Rodgers, TE, Packers
Richard Rodgers has officially passed Andrew Quarless on the depth chart, according to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Rodgers is only worth a late-round flier though, as the Packers plan on going with three-receiver sets.
Emmanuel Sanders, WR, Broncos
Emmanuel Sanders hasn’t practiced in nearly two weeks because of a hamstring injuries. Hamstring problems tend to linger, especially for receivers, so the Denver wideout could be off to a slow start at the beginning of the season.
Karlos Williams, RB, Bills
Karlos Williams was looking like he would be the No. 2 running back this season, but he’ll be out for a few weeks with an injury. I’m not in favor of drafting handcuffs, so I was planning on avoiding Williams anyway.
Aug. 18
Martellus Bennett, TE, Bears
Kevin White could potentially be out for the year. This should help Martellus Bennett, who will continue to be heavily targeted by Jay Cutler.
Randall Cobb, WR, Packers
I recently mentioned a report that Green Bay wants to run a faster-paced scoring attack in 2015. The team ran 33 plays in the first quarter in their initial exhibition game, which is well ahead of last year’s average. Randall Cobb and the other Packer play-makers will obviously benefit from this.
Chris Johnson, RB, Cardinals
Chris Johnson is getting an up arrow because he’s actually on an NFL team again. That doesn’t mean you should draft him, though. Johnson is a has-been who won’t produce. He shouldn’t be selected in 12-team leagues, but you can bet that the clueless guys who still read fantasy mags in your league will definitely find a way to obtain him.
David Johnson, RB, Cardinals
I actually don’t think Andre Ellington will be impacted very much by the Chris Johnson signing. David Johnson, however, is a different story. Arizona signed Chris because David couldn’t get healthy, so don’t take a flier on the rookie.
Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers
A few days ago, I mentioned a report that the Packers want to run a faster-paced offense this year. Well, mission accomplished so far; they ran 33 plays in the first quarter in their preseason opener, which is well ahead of last season’s average. If the Packers stick to this strategy, Rodgers will easily be the No. 1 fantasy quarterback.
Aug. 17
Fred Jackson, RB, Bills
There’s speculation now that Karlos Williams could take over the No. 2 running back job behind LeSean McCoy. This is noteworthy because I’ve seen Fred Jackson get drafted late in my fantasy mocks, yet Jackson appears to be on the verge of moving down the depth chart. It doesn’t help that he has barely practiced because of a bum hamstring.
