2015 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Weeks of Aug. 3
Aug. 10
Jonas Gray, RB, Patriots
Jonas Gray has lost 10 pounds this offseason, prompting some Patriot beat writers to describe him as “powerful and swift” in training camp. LeGarrette Blount is the favorite to lead the team in carries, but he’s hurt. Gray could seize at least a share of the workload with a strong preseason.
Jeff Janis, WR, Packers
Jeff Janis showed some promise at OTAs, but hasn’t taken the “next step” in training camp, according to Packer Report. Janis was seen as a late-round sleeper earlier in the summer, but now he’s just waiver-wire fodder.
Kendall Wright, WR, Titans
Kendall Wright has reportedly developed strong chemistry with Marcus Mariota in training camp. All signs point to Wright having a career year. He’s going to be atop my list of Fantasy Football Sleepers when it’s updated later this week.
Aug. 9
Nelson Agholor, WR, Eagles
Nelson Agholor, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, hasn’t shown the coaching staff that he’s worthy of a starting job yet. Agholor is being way overdrafted. Let someone else take him in your league.
David Cobb, RB, Titans
David Cobb hasn’t impressed thus far in training camp. He has struggled as a runner, and he hasn’t been good in pass protection either. Bishop Sankey appears to be the heavy favorite to start for Tennessee.
Chris Polk, RB, Texans
Chris Polk was out with a hamstring, but he’s back in action. Bill O’Brien was telling the media that Polk can play all three downs. He’s a legitimate candidate to start for Houston.
Aug. 8
Davante Adams, WR, Packers
Aaron Rodgers told the media that Davante Adams will be getting more opportunities this season. Adams deserves this, as he has flashed in training camp. Adams will be a solid reserve fantasy receiver who will have plenty of upside; his numbers could explode if either Randall Cobb or Jordy Nelson goes down.
Joique Bell, RB, Lions
Joique Bell has been on the active-PUP list since training camp began. However, he’s close to coming off of it; he’s been sprinting and cutting well in practice. He should be good to go for the season opener.
Jordan Reed, TE, Redskins
Jordan Reed has been terribly injury-prone throughout his career thus far, but that may change. According to a report, Reed has made an effort to eat healthier and to stretch more in order to avoid injuries. He could finally live up to expectations.
T.J. Yeldon, RB, Jaguars
T.J. Yeldon has reportedly done well in pass protection during training camp. Rookie running backs can be risky because coaches may not feel comfortable having them on the field because of protection issues, but that doesn’t appear to be a problem for Yeldon.
Aug. 7
DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Texans
I’m moving DeAndre Hopkins today. I forgot to take him into account in relation to the Arian Foster injury. With Foster out, the Texans will have to throw more, meaning Hopkins will get more targets.
Chris Ivory, RB, Jets
Chris Ivory has been receiving the bulk of the first-team touches in training camp, and he seems poised to handle the majority of the workload this season. With Chris Johnson gone, the job is now Ivory’s, yet people haven’t caught on because Ivory’s ADP is pretty low.
Rashad Jennings, RB, Giants
Rashad Jennings has reportedly been receiving more second-team reps than both Shane Vereen and Andre Williams. Jennings is being overdrafted right now.
Aug. 6
Michael Floyd, WR, Cardinals
Michael Floyd injured his hand in practice and is expected to miss about a month. There’s a chance he could be out for a couple of regular-season games. I’m going to bump Floyd down a bit because Carson Palmer could use this time to develop a stronger rapport with John Brown.
Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Titans
Dorial Green-Beckham isn’t expected to make much of an impact early on as a rookie, according to team reporter Jim Wyatt. Green-Beckham has struggled with drops in practice.
Stevie Johnson, WR, Chargers
Here’s another positive report on Stevie Johnson: Philip Rivers recently told the media that he was most excited about Johnson fitting into his offense this season. Johnson will take Eddie Royal’s place in San Diego’s scoring attack, meaning he has major fantasy potential. He’s one of my top Fantasy Football Sleepers.
Chris Polk, RB, Texans
The Texans are reportedly high on Chris Polk. Though he’s currently nursing an injury, allowing Alfred Blue to get the first-team reps, Polk could end up winning the starting job. Stay tuned for updates during the preseason.
Aug. 5
Jonathan Grimes, RB, Texans
I already gave Alfred Blue a stock-up arrow, but Jonathan Grimes deserves one as well. Blue is the favorite to start in the wake of Arian Foster’s injury, but Grimes will certainly fight for touches. Grimes could even win the starting gig; he was the superior back during the preseason last summer.
Duke Johnson, RB, Browns
Duke Johnson has been out for a while with a hamstring injury, prompting head coach Mike Pettine to call his absence “disappointing.” According to Albert Breer, Johnson could be out a few more weeks, which doesn’t bode well for his playing time this year.
Marqise Lee, WR, Jaguars
Marqise Lee is now practicing with the second team, behind Allen Hurns. Lee has struggled in training camp thus far and needs a strong preseason to reenter the starting lineup.
Terrance West, RB, Browns
Terrance West is reportedly in the doghouse because he showed up to training camp out of shape. The Browns are also concerned with West’s maturity. Stay away from him in fantasy drafts.
Albert Wilson, WR, Chiefs
According to Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Doug Pederson, Albert Wilson has been on the “same page” with Alex Smith. Wilson thrived at the end of the season last year, so he could pick up where he left off. He’s not much of a fantasy option with Smith under center, but he’s worth considering in the late rounds.
Kendall Wright, WR, Titans
Kendall Wright has been predicted to lead the Titans in catches this season, per team reporter Jim Wyatt. With Marcus Mariota looking great in practice, Wright’s arrow is definitely pointing up. He’s one of the top players in my Fantasy Football Sleepers list.
Aug. 4
Giovani Bernard, RB, Bengals
Giovani Bernard won’t have nearly as many touches in 2015, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. The Bengals want Jeremy Hill to handle the full workload, so Bernard can’t be started unless Hill gets hurt.
Alfred Blue, RB, Texans
Alfred Blue is the favorite to start for the Texans in the wake of Arian Foster’s groin injury. Don’t get too excited, however, as Blue isn’t very good, and he may have trouble holding off Jonathan Grimes and Kenny Hilliard. There could be a committee in Houston.
Michael Crabtree, WR, Raiders
In a surprising turn of events, Michael Crabtree has been the recipient of multiple positive reviews during training camp. It’s hard to really buy into Crabtree as a fantasy option because of the quarterbacking situation, but there’s no denying that he’ll be playing harder than ever for a big contract next spring.
Arian Foster, RB, Texans
Arian Foster suffered a significant groin injury that may require surgery. He could be out until November. He obviously can’t be touched in the first 10 rounds now, but makes sense as a late-round flier. For more on how the Texans will be impacted, check out my NFL Disaster Grades.
Chris Matthews, WR, Seahawks
Chris Matthews, nearly the hero of the Super Bowl, has picked up where he left off in the “big game,” as he has worked with the first-team offense in three-receiver sets. With a strong preseason, Matthews could become the No. 2 wideout on the roster.
Aug. 3
Sam Bradford, QB, Eagles
Sam Bradford has been cleared for drills, and the media believes it’s clear that he will be the starter Week 1 over Mark Sanchez. Bradford would be a nice fantasy option if it weren’t a virtual guarantee that he’ll be injured by October. Philadelphia’s starting quarterback – whether that’s Bradford, Sanchez or Tim Tebow – can be started in all 12-man fantasy leagues because of the volume of Chip Kelly’s offense.
Isaiah Crowell, RB, Browns
Cleveland’s running back situation was completely muddled last year, but head coach Mike Pettine may not have a chance to screw things up this season. That’s because Terrance West and Duke Johnson both suffered injuries in practice over the weekend. Isaiah Crowell will have a chance to prove that he can get over his ball-security issues while both are out.
Markus Wheaton, WR, Steelers
Ben Roethlisberger, appearing on radio over the weekend, said that Markus Wheaton – not Martavis Bryant – would be the team’s No. 2 receiver, and that Wheaton has thrived in training camp. I wouldn’t completely buy into this, as Roethlisberger could just be talking up a mediocre-at-best teammate, but Wheaton is worth considering in the late rounds.
