Sept. 3, 2015.
This is a standard 2015 Fantasy Football Mock Draft I took part in with 11 other members of the forum and followers on Twitter. As usual, I’ll have analysis of my picks, as well as the best and worst selections every two rounds.
Just a heads up that we have 2015 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts every Wednesday evening. Check out the fantasy mock draft thread for details.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: You’re guaranteed one of the best seven running backs if you have a top-seven pick, so I went with the best one available on my Fantasy Football Cheat Sheet. I’m fine with Marshawn Lynch at No. 4. Meanwhile, in the second round, I had a couple of running backs ranked ahead of Randall Cobb, but I chose him because I thought one of them would fall to me at 3.04. I also planned on taking Aaron Rodgers, but Marauders stole him from me.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: Marauders deserves credit for nabbing Rodgers so late – way after Andrew Luck went off the board. Oh, and two of the running backs I had ahead of Cobb were Justin Forsett and Lamar Miller.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I can’t say I liked either of “D’s” picks. Andrew Luck will produce for him, but No. 8 overall is too rich. LeSean McCoy, meanwhile, is nursing an injury and may not be ready for Week 1. He’s on my Fantasy Football Busts list.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I’m fine with Carlos Hyde, but I was considering either Jordan Matthews or DeAndre Hopkins, and I was almost punished for not taking either. There’s no receiver depth this year, especially with Jordy Nelson and Kelvin Benjamin done for the season, and once those players went off the board, I wasn’t confident I could land a solid WR2. Fortunately, Emmanuel Sanders dropped to me. Sanders has been injured, and Peyton Manning is set to decline, but Sanders should still have a decent year.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Matthews and Hopkins need to be mentioned as top picks, as do the first three picks in Round 3. I think I would’ve taken any of those players at 3.04.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Arian Foster in the fourth round? Blegh. Good luck with that. I don’t like Jimmy Graham either. I’m not sure that situation works out in Seattle.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Pop Tarts’ strategy. Four running backs in four rounds? I don’t think I can get behind that. Something like that was acceptable in the 90s and early 2000s when running backs were more prominent, but not now with the receiving depth being so weak.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: I’m not crazy about Andre Ellington, but he was the top running back on my board. I considered Russell Wilson at 5.04, but I thought there was a chance he could drop to me in the sixth round. He didn’t, but I like Vincent Jackson there. Jackson has shown signs this preseason that he’s ready to have a bounce-back year.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Wilson deserves mention. Other players I was hoping would drop to me at 6.09 were Allen Robinson and Sammy Watkins. I would’ve taken either over Jackson.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Jonathan Stewart and Giovani Bernard are two running backs I have on my Fantasy Football Busts list. Bernard especially was chosen too early.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: The run on quarterbacks began in Round 7, and I didn’t want to worry about not landing Matthew Stafford in the eighth frame. As for that round, I would’ve preferred to wait on Kendall Wright, but all of the other appealing receivers were gone at that point.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Markus Wheaton and Stevie Johnson forced me into Wright. However, the best pick may have been Bishop Sankey, a starting running back who has looked decent in the preseason.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: I understand that someone has to catch passes in Carolina, but Devin Funchess has been injured. He may not be able to contribute early. And speaking of poor receiver selections, Mike Wallace sucks. He could very easily quit on the Vikings.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Katy Killaz remarked that I stole Tyler Eifert, and I would agree with that. Eifert could easily finish as a top-six tight end this year, so I’m more than happy to wait on him until Round 9. As for Ronnie Hillman, he’ll be able to produce RB1 numbers if C.J. Anderson goes down, and he’ll receive touches in the meantime.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: I think Owen Daniels and Kyle Rudolph provide good value as TE1s as well. Eddie Royal and Shane Vereen seem like they could be good picks, too. Royal was at his best with Jay Cutler in Denver, while Vereen will get plenty of touches in New York’s offense.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: I can’t get behind Victor Cruz, given that NFL players simply can’t return from torn patellar tendons. Maybe he’s fine as a late-round flier, but Round 9 is way too early for him. Meanwhile, any defense, particularly one potentially without its top safety, should not be chosen in the 10th round.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Marauders was pissed when I grabbed Breshad Perriman, so I guess that was payback for Aaron Rodgers. I like Perriman a lot; he’s high on my Fantasy Football Sleepers list. Joe Flacco is a solid QB2, as far as I’m concerned.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Other sleepers I have on that page are Jonas Gray, Denard Robinson, Matt Jones and Jordan Reed. Oh, and taking Julius Thomas in the 12th round or so seems pretty smart. That could really pay off.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I think selecting high-upside players is key late in drafts. That’s why I don’t like the Rueben Randle or Torrey Smith picks. They both have such a low ceiling.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Andre Williams will get the early-down work if Rashad Jennings gets hurt again, and Jennings isn’t very durable, so why not? Defense, kicker… both from the Raiders? Maybe this is a preview of what I’ll be doing on my NFL Picks page next week.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: High-upside picks include: Ty Montgomery, Jeff Janis and Brandon Coleman. Montgomery is my favorite of those.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Low-upside picks include: DeAngelo Williams, Michael Crabtree, Reggie Bush, Chris Johnson and Reggie Wayne.
My Fantasy Team:
QB – Matthew Stafford, Lions
RB – Marshawn Lynch, Seahawks
RB – Carlos Hyde, 49ers
WR – Randall Cobb, Packers
WR – Emmanuel Sanders, Broncos
RB/WR – Andre Ellington, RB, Cardinals
TE – Tyler Eifert, Bengals
K – Sebastian Janikowski, Raiders
DEF – Raiders Defense
BN – Vincent Jackson, WR, Buccaneers
BN – Kendall Wright, WR, Titans
BN – Ronnie Hillman, RB, Broncos
BN – Breshad Perriman, WR, Ravens
BN – Joe Flacco, QB, Ravens
BN – Andre Williams, RB, Giants
This is a solid team that should be able to compete for a fantasy championship, as long as there aren’t any devastating injuries. I don’t think I’m weak anywhere, and I feel like I’m pretty strong at running back and receiver. My depth seems good as well.
