2015 Fantasy Football Rookie Rankings: Dynasty

Todd Gurley, RB, Rams
The unquestioned No. 1 2015 fantasy player in dynasty formats, Todd Gurley is the best running back prospect to enter the NFL in quite some time. One team even told us that they believe he’s the next Jim Brown. The problem for this upcoming season is that Gurley might miss the first month or so, but he’ll be a big producer once he returns to the field.

Melvin Gordon, RB, Chargers
The Chargers didn’t move up for Melvin Gordon to keep him on the bench. They’re going to use him as a three-down back. Gordon, projected to be the next Jamaal Charles, is the top rookie in re-draft leagues because of Todd Gurley’s injury. I’ll take Gurley over Gordon in dynasty formats, but the San Diego runner is a close second.

T.J. Yeldon, RB, Jaguars
It’s not a question of Melvin Gordon versus Todd Gurley for re-draft leagues; it’s T.J. Yeldon versus Gurley. The latter may not be ready for the opener, so Yeldon is the safer option. He should be productive, as Jacksonville made several improvements to its offensive line. Yeldon is the No. 3 player in dynasty formats.

Amari Cooper, WR, Raiders
Amari Cooper went to a team that won’t be able to maximize his numbers as long as Derek Carr is his starting quarterback. However, we saw Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans produce despite being paired with poor quarterbacks. Cooper could do the same thing.

Kevin White, WR, Bears
I’d rather have Kevin White this season, but Amari Cooper over the long haul. Jay Cutler will be able to get more out of White than Carr will be able to with Cooper, but ultimately, Cooper projects as the better receiver – though it is close.

Tevin Coleman, RB, Falcons
It’s a close call between Tevin Coleman and Ameer Abdullah. Coleman was chosen later in the draft, but he has less competition at the position on his team. Devonta Freeman barely showed anything as a rookie, so Coleman could be the starter in Week 1.

Ameer Abdullah, RB, Lions
Ameer Abdullah will split touches with Joique Bell right away, and he could emerge as the primary back at some point in the future. He’s a talented runner who can go the distance every time he touches the ball, so perhaps he’ll become the player the Lions were hoping they had in Reggie Bush.

Marcus Mariota, QB, Titans
Marcus Mariota is worth drafting in his rookie year, and he should be rated above Jameis Winston in dynasty formats. Mariota doesn’t have the great weapons Winston currently has at his disposal, but he’ll pick up tons of yardage by scrambling.

David Johnson, RB, Cardinals
The Cardinals didn’t think Andre Ellington could carry the load, so that would explain why they spent a third-round pick on David Johnson. It sounds like Johnson will get the goal-line touches as a rookie, and if he proves to be a successful draft pick, he might be able to take over as the primary back.

Breshad Perriman, WR, Ravens
Breshad Perriman is raw, but has tremendous upside. I’m not sure he’ll be able to do much as a rookie, despite the thin receiver depth chart, but I love his long-term projections. Marc Trestman is an offensive genius, while Joe Flacco has the huge arm to get the ball to Perriman downfield.

DeVante Parker, WR, Dolphins
Ryan Tannehill loved throwing to Jarvis Landry last season, so how much will DeVante Parker be involved right away? I would avoid Parker in re-draft leagues, but he has decent upside in dynasty formats.

Duke Johnson, RB, Browns
Mike Pettine seemed displeased with both Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West at times last year, platooning the two backs randomly. Perhaps he’ll feel better about Duke Johnson. Then again, maybe Pettine won’t play Johnson at all. Erratic coaches don’t make for quality fantasy running back situations.

Phillip Dorsett, WR, Colts
Indianapolis has a crowded group at receiver, so Phillip Dorsett won’t be able to do much as a rookie. He’s a much better option in dynasty leagues, as he may eventually start in an offense in which Andrew Luck is throwing the football to him. He has a ton of upside as a consequence.

Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Titans
Dorial Green-Beckham has top-five talent, but bottom-five mental capacity. Will he be able to learn Tennessee’s offense and contribute? If so, he’ll be a big producer with Marcus Mariota. If not, he may not even see the field very much.

Nelson Agholor, WR, Eagles
Non-elite rookie receivers usually should be avoided in fantasy re-draft formats, but Nelson Agholor has a chance to be productive during the 2015 season. That’s because Chip Kelly’s high-volume offense calls for it. Agholor would be higher in the dynasty rankings, but I’m not confident that Kelly will be sticking around more than another two years.

Jaelen Strong, WR, Texans
Jaelen Strong was a third-round selection, but could manage to start right away as a rookie. Strong had late-first-round talent and won’t have to leap many skilled receivers to see playing time. Unfortunately, the Texans don’t have a talented quarterback, so Strong’s numbers won’t be maximized, even if he starts.

Maxx Williams, TE, Ravens
It’s hard to like rookie tight ends in re-draft formats, but Maxx Williams could end up becoming a dependable target for Joe Flacco sooner rather than later. He figures to be a highly productive weapon for a long time.

Mike Davis, RB, 49ers
Mike Davis figures to be Carlos Hyde’s backup this season. He currently lacks work ethic, but if he can get his act together, he could eventually emerge as San Francisco’s starting back if Hyde struggles.

Jameis Winston, QB, Buccaneers
Jameis Winston has a couple of terrific weapons to work with, but it’ll be difficult for him to reach QB1 status anytime soon, given his affinity for interceptions. Winston is not a scrambling quarterback, so unlike Marcus Mariota, he won’t score tons of fantasy points by running around.

Sammie Coates, WR, Steelers
Sammie Coates was once considered a first-round prospect by some. He slipped to the third because of his poor hands. He’s talented though, so he could eventually break into Pittsburgh’s offense and become a part of a dynamic scoring attack.

Devin Funchess, WR, Panthers
Devin Funchess doesn’t have a natural position, but he’s expected to contribute for the Panthers as a No. 2 option across from Kelvin Benjamin. His long-term outlook is cloudy, as its unknown if he’ll be able to develop into a receiver.

Devin Smith, WR, Jets
Devin Smith is a blazing-fast receiver, but who’s going to throw the football to him? The Jets have a chance to land a quarterback next year – see the 2016 NFL Mock Draft – but there’s no guarantee. Smith won’t do much as a rookie and will struggle to produce until New York finds a franchise signal-caller.

David Cobb, RB, Titans
Bishop Sankey struggled as a rookie, so perhaps David Cobb will be able to emerge as the starter in 2015. It’s definitely possible. Just don’t be too bullish on Cobb, as he was a fifth-round pick, after all.

Cameron Artis-Payne, RB, Panthers
Jonathan Stewart is an injury-prone player, so if he misses some time, there’s a chance Cameron Artis-Payne will step in. He’s worth a late-round flier in re-draft leagues. He also should be in consideration for dynasty formats because Stewart won’t last much longer.

Jay Ajayi, RB, Dolphins
Jay Ajayi may have gone in the second or third round had it not been for a troublesome knee injury. Unfortunately this “bone on bone” knee problem could persist, hampering Ajayi’s career.

Matt Jones, RB, Redskins
Matt Jones will take over Roy Helu’s third-down work, so he has some value in PPR formats. He really shouldn’t be selected until the later rounds in re-draft leagues though, and he doesn’t hold much dynasty value unless Alfred Morris gets hurt.

Jeremy Langford, RB, Bears
Jeremy Langford won’t hold much value in fantasy leagues unless Matt Forte goes down. As long as Langford wins the No. 2 job, he can be drafted late as a handcuff. In dynasty formats, he’s worth a flier.

Justin Hardy, WR, Falcons
Justin Hardy will serve Harry Douglas’ old role as Atlanta’s slot receiver. Like Douglas, Hardy will only have relevance if one of the starters goes down. Perhaps Hardy will evolve into the No. 2 wideout once Roddy White retires.

Buck Allen, RB, Ravens
Buck Allen has a chance to be Justin Forsett’s primary backup, so he’s worth a look in deep leagues where handcuffs are necessary. Allen’s long-term outlook is cloudy, however.

Chris Conley, WR, Chiefs
Chris Conley is a raw, but athletic receiver, who couldn’t be counted on under normal circumstances. However, Kansas City’s depth chart at receiver is so thin that he might have a chance at starting as a rookie. Thus, his short-term outlook is actually brighter than his dynasty prospects.

Tyler Lockett, WR, Seahawks
Tyler Lockett might have a chance to eventually emerge into the starting lineup, but will it matter? Russell Wilson loves spreading the ball around, so Lockett may never develop into a reliable fantasy option.

Clive Walford, TE, Raiders
Derek Carr loves checking the ball down, so I’d expect him to lean on Clive Walford heavily. There’s no guarantee that Walford will do much as a rookie, however, and it’s unknown how long Carr will last for the long haul.

Vince Mayle, WR, Browns
Vince Mayle might have a chance to play sooner rather than later, given the status of Cleveland’s receiving corps. I wouldn’t expect much, however, given the status of Cleveland’s quarterbacking corps.
