2015 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Weeks of Aug. 10
Aug. 17
Fred Jackson, RB, Bills
There’s speculation now that Karlos Williams could take over the No. 2 running back job behind LeSean McCoy. This is noteworthy because I’ve seen Fred Jackson get drafted late in my fantasy mocks, yet Jackson appears to be on the verge of moving down the depth chart. It doesn’t help that he has barely practiced because of a bum hamstring.
Aug. 16
C.J. Spiller, RB, Saints
C.J. Spiller will be out for the rest of the preseason with arthroscopic knee surgery. It sounds like Spiller could be back in Week 1, but things like that are far from guaranteed. The good news is that this could prompt Spiller’s stock to fall, allowing us to snag him in a good value round.
Kevin White, WR, Bears
Kevin White will have shin surgery and will be placed on the PUP list. There’s a chance he could miss the entire year as well. It goes without saying that he is now undraftable.
Aug. 15
Sam Bradford, QB, Eagles
Sam Bradford won’t play in the preseason opener, which wouldn’t have been a big deal, but now the Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski is adamant that Bradford is not 100 percent. This is no surprise, as Bradford was limping around a couple of months ago. He remains a solid, late-round gamble, but shouldn’t be touched before the 11th frame in a 12-team league.
Zach Ertz, TE, Eagles
Zach Ertz will undergo a procedure on his groin and will be out about a month, perhaps more. Ertz is saying that he hopes to be ready for the season opener, but he’ll likely miss the first two or three contests.
Aug. 14
Ameer Abdullah, RB, Lions
Ameer Abdullah has been a “star” in training camp for the Lions, according to Michael Rothstein of ESPN. Joique Bell remains the early favorite to start, but Abdullah could change that with a terrific preseason.
Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers
The Packers were 21st in offensive plays per game last season, but that sounds like it’s going to change dramatically in 2015. ESPN is reporting that Green Bay wants to play at a faster pace, which is great news for Aaron Rodgers and all of his weapons.
Aug. 13
Rashad Jennings, RB, Giants
There was a report about Rashad Jennings getting snaps with the second team last week, but he’s been ahead of Andre Williams for the most part. Shane Vereen will see the field most often in all likelihood, but there’s no doubt that Jennings is ahead of Williams on the depth chart.
Sammy Watkins, WR, Bills
No one has been able to cover Sammy Watkins in training camp thus far, per a report by ABC Buffalo. Watkins had a strong rookie campaign despite being banged up, and he figures to be even better in 2015, despite the horrible situation at quarterback.
Aug. 12
Brandon Coleman, WR, Saints
Brandon Coleman has drawn tons of positive reports during training camp, and there’s now speculation that he could be the team’s third receiver. Coleman is an undrafted free agent from 2014, but he’s a massive target at 6-foot-6. At the very least, he’ll be a red-zone target for Drew Brees. He has major upside and is definitely worth considering in the late rounds.
Eric Ebron, TE, Lions
Eric Ebron had a miserable rookie campaign, but it appears as though he’s getting better. He had a strong training camp, and he was one of Matthew Stafford’s top targets during a scrimmage recently.
Garrett Hartley, K, Steelers
The Steelers signed Garrett Hartley as a replacement for the injured Shaun Suisham. Hartley plays in a high-powered offense, but he’s not an ideal kicker, given that he connected on just 73.3 percent of his attempts the last time he was a team’s main kicker.
Rob Housler, TE, Browns
Rob Housler has been called out for his poor hands by head coach Mike Pettine. There was some hype around Housler when he went to the Browns, but he was never a realistic fantasy option because he’s just not that good.
David Johnson, RB, Cardinals
Another stock-down arrow for David Johnson: He has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring injury, which means he may not be practicing for a while. This is not good news, as Bruce Arians told the media that Johnson won’t play unless he’s able to practice.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Buccaneers
Lovie Smith told the media that he has “big plans” for Austin Seferian-Jenkins this season, citing that his second-year tight end has great potential.
Geno Smith, QB, Jets
Geno Smith is out for 6-10 weeks, which affects 2-QB leagues. Ryan Fitzpatrick is the favorite to start, but he may not hold his job for very long. For more on how this affects the Jets, check out my NFL Disaster Grades.
Aug. 11
Andre Ellington and David Johnson, RBs, Cardinals
Bruce Arians talked about the possibility of signing a free agent running back, citing that he was disappointed with both of his main running backs. Andre Ellington has been hampered with a hamstring, while David Johnson has been out with the same malady. I don’t have an issue with taking Johnson late, but this is a situation to avoid otherwise.
Shaun Suisham, K, Steelers
Shaun Suisham is out for the year with a torn ACL. For more on how this affects the Steelers, check out my Disaster Grades.
Kevin White, WR, Bears
There is speculation that Kevin White could miss the entire preseason with shin splints. Given how John Fox hates using rookies, White is barely draftable at this point.
Aug. 10
Jonas Gray, RB, Patriots
Jonas Gray has lost 10 pounds this offseason, prompting some Patriot beat writers to describe him as “powerful and swift” in training camp. LeGarrette Blount is the favorite to lead the team in carries, but he’s hurt. Gray could seize at least a share of the workload with a strong preseason.
Jeff Janis, WR, Packers
Jeff Janis showed some promise at OTAs, but hasn’t taken the “next step” in training camp, according to Packer Report. Janis was seen as a late-round sleeper earlier in the summer, but now he’s just waiver-wire fodder.
Kendall Wright, WR, Titans
Kendall Wright has reportedly developed strong chemistry with Marcus Mariota in training camp. All signs point to Wright having a career year. He’s going to be atop my list of Fantasy Football Sleepers when it’s updated later this week.
