Each offseason brings change to NFL rosters, and those changes often have fantasy implications. Below, I lay out the changes at the skill positions and how those moves impact the fantasy status of the new roster.
2017
-
QB: Case Keenum, Sam Bradford
RB: Dalvin Cook, Latavius Murray, Jerick McKinnon, C.J. Ham
WR: Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen, Jarius Wright, Laquon Treadwell
TE: Kyle Rudolph, David Morgan
2018
-
QB: Kirk Cousins, Trevor Siemian
RB: Dalvin Cook, Latavius Murray, C.J. Ham
WR: Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen, Kendall Wright, Laquon Treadwell
TE: Kyle Rudolph, Tyler Conklin, David Morgan
Pre-Draft Offseason:
The Vikings had a strong 2017 season and even won a playoff game, but that didn’t stop them from letting their quarterback Case Keenum walk and replacing him with Kirk Cousins for 2018. They have a strong offensive and defensive core, and are looking for Cousins to get them over the hump. I don’t love Cousins’ ability, but I also think he is an upgrade over Keenum. I do think Cousins can get the Vikings to the championship if the cards fall their way, and he should also be able to keep fantasy value with the strong receiving corps in Minnesota.
The Vikings let Jerick McKinnon go after his strong 2017 in relief of rookie Dalvin Cook, which is a move they likely needed to do for the money side of things, but it is a loss for the offense overall. Thankfully, they do get Cook back, who already had shown his value as a receiver in his limited starts last season. If Cook can stay healthy, he’s enough to get the job done, as Latavius Murray is strictly a backup to Cook due to his lack of receiving skills. That makes for a lot of work and a lot of fantasy points. I’m all-in on Cook as a bell-cow back on a team with a strong defense to keep scores tight and rushing attempts maximized.
Post-Draft Update
This was an uneventful draft for fantasy, as the Vikings drafted one offensive skill player, tight end Tyler Conklin out of Central Michigan. Conklin won’t have any fantasy appeal with Kyle Rudolph anchoring the position though. He is a receiver and has the upside to be a fantasy player if given snaps but I don’t see that happening soon.
2018 Fantasy Outlook:
Stud: Dalvin Cook
Solid: Kirk Cousins, Adam Thielen, Stefon Diggs, Kyle Rudolph
Sleeper: Kendall Wright
