2018 Fantasy Football Mock Draft (Real Draft)

Aug. 26, 2018.

This is a 2018 Fantasy Football Mock Draft I took part in with 11 of my friends. I’ve been in this league since 2005. It’s a standard-scoring league that starts three receivers and no flex.

Just a heads up that we have 2018 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts every Wednesday afternoon or evening. Follow me on Twitter or Facebook to find out when the next mock draft will be.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: On our podcast, Kenny and I discussed the possibility of selecting Antonio Brown first overall in leagues that start three receivers. Thus, I was happy that Antonio Brown fell to me. I happily would’ve selected Brown or DeAndre Hopkins.

I’ve mentioned that going back-to-back receiver this year is a smart strategy because the position dries up very quickly. That once again happened in this draft, as you’ll see.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: Jay deserves a mention for taking Hopkins. Ipe as well for Michael Thomas, whom I would’ve chosen over Keenan Allen at 2.07.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: Given how thin running backs and receivers are this year, I can’t back a tight end selection in the second round, even if it’s Rob Gronkowski.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Another receiver? Well, we do start three of them. There were only two viable wideouts worth taking in the first four rounds available when I was on the clock, T.Y. Hilton and JuJu Smith-Schuster. I considered Smith-Schuster until I remembered that I have Antonio Brown.

I grabbed my first running back in Jay Ajayi, who should have a dominant season as long as he can remain healthy.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I was hoping for Stefon Diggs or Tyreek Hill at 3.06, but Jason and Kenny snatched them off the board. Smith-Schuster deserves mention as well. I also liked some of the running back picks, as I would’ve strongly considered Kenyan Drake and Kerryon Johnson at 4.07.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I don’t like taking quarterbacks early in fantasy, especially in leagues in which you must start three receivers. However, a name sticks out: Patrick Mahomes at 4.05. I love Mahomes. He’s been on my Fantasy Football Sleepers page since May. But the fourth round? If Duane really wanted him, he could’ve taken Mahomes four rounds later.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: I grabbed my next two running backs. I like both Jamaal Williams and Marshawn Lynch this year. I was hoping for another running back instead of Lynch, however…

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: …And that was Adrian Peterson. Ipe broke my heart by stealing Peterson in the sixth round. Peterson looked terrific in his preseason debut, and he’ll be running behind one of the better offensive lines in the NFL. I think he’ll hit 1,000 rushing yards.

Two other players I really liked: Carlos Hyde and Emmanuel Sanders. If I didn’t already have three receivers, I would’ve strongly considered Sanders at 6.07. I may have taken him anyway. He may catch 100 passes this year.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Aju has won the championship in two of the past four seasons, but I didn’t like his two picks in these rounds. Josh Gordon is very risky, while Dede Westbrook, although a sleeper of mine, was a bit of a reach in the sixth round.

The worst pick was Lamar Miller, who may not last until mid-season. He’s completely worn down.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: I continued to grab running backs and receivers. The positions are very thin, and they provided the most value in these spots. Kelvin Benjamin could have a strong season if he stays healthy, while Sony Michel is a first-round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft with upside.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Kenny took two players I was going to choose with my next picks, Mark Ingram and Jimmy Garoppolo. Ingram has been going too early in many mock drafts I’ve done, but the seventh round is terrific value for him. I also liked the Peyton Barber, Chris Carson and Robby Anderson selections.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: It’s way too early for Keelan Cole, as well as any sort of defense. Take defenses in the final rounds!

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Pierre Garcon is finally healthy, so I thought he was a steal in the ninth round. He should have a strong year with Jimmy Garoppolo throwing to him. Meanwhile, I was the final person to select a quarterback, which is just fine. Most fantasy quarterbacks are bunched together in my rankings, as there really isn’t much of a difference between the fifth and 15th quarterbacks in my rankings is 10 projected points, which is fewer than one point per week on average! You can wait on quarterbacks this year.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Lansdale Legends had a couple of sharp picks in Demaryius Thomas and Corey Clement. I think Thomas has been going too early in mock drafts this summer, but the ninth round was a steal for him. Clement, meanwhile, is talented and could have a solid season if Jay Ajayi were to go down.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Once again, it’s too early for defenses, so those two choices stick out as the worst in these rounds.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Back-to-back quarterbacks for me, as I’ll play matchups with Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr. I was the second-to-last person to take a tight end, with Kenny winning the crown in that regard. Anyone who has listened to the podcast should not be surprised by this.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Doug Martin and Anthony Miller stand out as two players who have high upside. Both players could be very productive this year.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: The defense pick was bad, of course, and I don’t like selecting backup tight ends. Jack Doyle will have to share targets with Eric Ebron this year.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 13-16: Geronimo Allison and Phillip Lindsay are two players I have high on my Fantasy Football Sleepers page.

I grabbed the Panthers, who should do well versus the Travis Frederick-less Cowboys in Week 1. And if you’re wondering about Roberto Aguayo, that’s just a meme. I plan on cutting him and stashing another sleeper until 24 hours prior to the lineup deadline.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-16: High-upside picks include: James Conner, Ryan Grant, Taywan Taylor.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-16: Low-upside picks include: Eric Decker, Mike Wallace, Mohamed Sanu.

‘ll be adjusting some of my Fantasy Football Rankings based on these draft results, so check them out. Also, we’ll be doing mock drafts every Wednesday afternoon or evening, so come join us!

My Fantasy Team:

QB – Matthew Stafford, QB, Lions 6
RB – Jay Ajayi, RB, Eagles 9
RB – Jamaal Williams, RB, Packers 7
WR – Antonio Brown, WR, Steelers 7
WR – Keenan Allen, WR, Chargers 8
WR – T.Y. Hilton, WR, Colts 9
TE – George Kittle, TE, 49ers 11
K – Roberto Aguayo, K, ???
DEF – Panthers Defense

BN – Marshawn Lynch, RB, Raiders 7
BN – Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Bills 11
BN – Sony Michel, RB, Patriots 11
BN – Pierre Garcon, WR, 49ers 11
BN – Geronimo Allison, WR, Packers 7
BN – Derek Carr, QB, Raiders 7
BN – Phillip Lindsay, RB, Broncos 8

This is the first real fantasy football draft I completed this summer, with four more to go. I like this team. My receivers are stacked, which is important, given our format. I waited a bit on running backs, but my stable at the position seems solid to me. I might have the weakest quarterbacks and tight ends in the league, but not by much. Besides, Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr are both solid, and I’ll be able to play matchups, which is something I like to do with quarterbacks.
