2018 Fantasy Football Mock Draft

Aug. 16, 2018.

This is a 2018 Fantasy Football Mock Draft I took part in with 11 friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter (@walterfootball. As usual, I’ll have analysis of my picks, as well as the best and worst selections every two rounds.

Just a heads up that we have 2018 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts every Wednesday afternoon or evening. Check out the forum or follow me on Twitter to find out when the next mock draft will be.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I can’t believe Alvin Kamara fell to me. I just can’t believe it. I figured I’d go Odell Beckham then another receiver in the first two rounds, yet Kamara and Beckham both fell into my lap. If this occurred in real life, I would be thrilled.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I would’ve been thrilled with both DeAndre Hopkins or Kamara at 1.11, so Hopkins at 1.10 is good value. The best value of these two rounds that I wasn’t involved with was Keenan Allen at 2.11. It was shocking to see him fall that far, as I would’ve considered him at 2.02 if Beckham and Julio Jones were off the board!

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: This one sticks out, doesn’t it? Drafting Aaron Rodgers fifth overall is irresponsible. Unless you’re the biggest Rodgers fanboy ever and don’t care how well you do in your league, don’t select Rodgers in the opening round. Rodgers with the fifth pick is alarmingly early, especially when considering that I wouldn’t even be thrilled with Rodgers in the fifth round!

Christian McCaffrey at 2.08 in a non-PPR league is pretty bad as well. Not a good start for “My Team.”

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Unfortunately, I didn’t land great value in the third round. I’d much rather have JuJu Smith-Schuster in the fourth frame, but all of the tier-three receivers were gone except for Smith-Schuster, so I had to pull the trigger.

My next pick could’ve been one of several running backs, as I was considering Kerryon Johnson and Marshawn Lynch in addition to Kenyan Drake. It’s worth noting that my preferred target would’ve been Alex Collins.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I mentioned Collins already. Meanwhile, “My Team” rebounded nicely. I liked both of his selections. I would’ve been happy to land Tyreek Hill and Kerryon Johnson with my two choices.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Don’t draft Lamar Miller. The Texans don’t believe in him, so you shouldn’t either. He’s atop my Fantasy Football Busts list.

Alshon Jeffery is a bad pick as well, given his injury. There’s a chance Jeffery will miss the first six weeks of the season because of his problematic shoulder. He could still avoid the PUP list, but the fourth round is way too early for this sort of gamble.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Someone in the chat remarked that I was focused on running backs early in the draft. That’s because all of the good receivers were gone. I was hoping for Will Fuller, but once he was chosen, there was no value at the position any longer, so I doubled up on a couple of solid running backs instead. Jamaal Williams is someone I’m liking more and more, while Sony Michel has plenty of potential.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Fuller, as mentioned, is someone I was hoping for at 5.11. I also considered Dion Lewis at 6.02, so 6.11 was great value for him.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Some of the receivers were reaches. Chris Hogan, in particular. I also would’ve passed on all the quarterbacks in these two rounds. The running back and receiver positions are way too thin to use a fifth- or sixth-round pick on a non-elite fantasy quarterback.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Robert Woods provided strong value at the end of the seventh round. He showed great chemistry with Jared Goff last year, and I don’t think it’s crazy to expect him to out-produce Brandin Cooks this year.

Cam Newton, meanwhile, is a quarterback I’m higher on than most because of Norv Turner. I think Newton’s going to have a great season.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: If I went with another receiver in these two rounds, I probably would’ve chosen D.J. Moore, Robby Anderson or Mike Williams at 8.02, so I liked those picks.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Jordan Reed seems like a reach, considering his horrible durability. There are comparable tight ends who could’ve been chosen four rounds later. I also didn’t like the Chris Thompson pick, as the seventh round is too early for him in a non-PPR format. I’d rather have Samaje Perine in standard scoring.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Some don’t like the strategy, but I like having a strong backup quarterback. Not only does it hedge against injury, but it also allows me to play favorable matchups, especially late in the year when weather could be a factor.

JYD broke my heart by selecting Michael Gallup, so I went with Dede Westbrook instead. Westbrook should be Jacksonville’s top receiver this year.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Gallup is listed in my 2018 Fantasy Football Sleepers page, which is why I was hoping I could snag him. Michael Crabtree and Kenny Stills are two other picks I liked. Crabtree may have been my choice at 9.11. Stills, meanwhile, is someone I’m liking more and more in the wake of DeVante Parker’s troubles.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: The defense picks are bad, but they’re nothing compared to Derrius Guice, who is out for the season.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I noticed that Samaje Perine was still on the board. I was about to take him, but I had to opt for another veteran running back instead. Marshawn Lynch is old, so if he gets hurt, Doug Martin could be productive.

I’m probably going to take a tight end in the 12th round of all of my leagues. Aside from Rob Gronkowski, Travis Kelce and Zach Ertz, they’re all pretty much the same, so you should wait.

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: David Njoku was actually the tight end I was planning to select, but he went off the board earlier in the 11th frame. Otherwise, Jamison Crowder, Geronimo Allison and Cameron Meredith are players who provide lots of upside.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Conversely, Allen Hurns, Stephen Gostkowski, DeVante Parker and the defenses provide no upside.

MY PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: I needed a fifth receiver, and Ryan Grant is firmly installed as Andrew Luck’s No. 2 receiver, so he could have a strong season.

Baltimore’s defense plays the Bills in Week 1, which is a great matchup. And Matt Wile is this week’s meme kicker. Congrats, Matt!

BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: High-upside picks include: Kenny Golladay, Derek Carr and D’Onta Foreman.

WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Low-upside picks include: Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell and Tyler Lockett.

‘ll be adjusting some of my Fantasy Football Rankings based on these draft results, so check them out. Also, we’ll be doing mock drafts every Wednesday afternoon or evening, so come join us!

My Fantasy Team:

QB – Cam Newton, QB, Panthers
RB – Alvin Kamara, RB, Saints
RB – Kenyan Drake, RB, Dolphins
WR – Odell Beckham Jr., WR, Giants
WR – JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR, Steelers
RB/WR – Jamaal Williams, RB, Packers
TE – George Kittle, TE, 49ers
K – Matt Wile, K, Steelers
DEF – Ravens Defense

BN – Sony Michel, RB, Patriots
BN – Robert Woods, WR, Rams
BN – Matthew Stafford, QB, Lions
BN – Dede Westbrook, WR, Jaguars
BN – Doug Martin, RB, Raiders
BN – Ryan Grant, WR, Colts

I really like this team. My running backs are a strong group, headlined by Alvin Kamara, whom I was somehow able to steal at 11th overall. My receivers aren’t great, but I like my top two players at the position, especially Odell Beckham Jr. A fantasy team with Kamara and Beckham is going to have some very high-scoring weeks. Meanwhile, I like Cam Newton this year, so I feel like my only “weak” spot is tight end, but I think anyone who doesn’t have one of the top three guys at the position can say that.
