This is a 2018 Fantasy Football Mock Draft I took part in with 11 friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter (@walterfootball. As usual, I’ll have analysis of my picks, as well as the best and worst selections every two rounds.
Just a heads up that we have 2018 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts every Wednesday afternoon or evening. Check out the forum or follow me on Twitter to find out when the next mock draft will be.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: My ideal outcome if drafting toward the end of the first round is going receiver-receiver, but Melvin Gordon is too good to pass up. I would’ve felt the same way about Leonard Fournette. I had to go receiver with the second pick because that position is so thin. I have Keenan Allen rated above Davante Adams, but I didn’t want to select players from the same team with my two selections.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I was hoping for either Michael Thomas or Julio Jones, but they went right before me. Allen was a great choice as well, as was A.J. Green, who provides good value at the end of Round 2.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: Le’Veon Bell is a great player, but he’s too risky to be chosen with the third-overall pick. Bell said he’s not going to report to the Steelers on Labor Day, so he could miss regular-season action.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I’m glad I was able to land a tier-three receiver in the third round. It was a close call between JuJu Smith-Schuster and T.Y. Hilton. I moved the former ahead of Hilton, who has some concern with Andrew Luck’s recovery.
Jay Ajayi is a strong RB2 to own. I actually had Ajayi rated higher than both receivers I mentioned, but there were so many running backs I had in that group, so I could afford to wait.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I was considering Hilton at 3.09, so he’s even better at 3.12. Kenyan Drake is another running back I would’ve considered at 4.04. I liked Drake more than Ajayi.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: The two tight end picks that weren’t Rob Gronkowski were poor; running back and receivers are too thin to take a tight end this early. Josh Gordon is also too much of a risk in the fourth frame.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: I was hoping for Kerryon Johnson or Jamaal Williams, but both were selected before my fifth-round pick. I settled for Will Fuller, who would’ve been a better choice in the sixth frame. Sony Michel, meanwhile, isn’t a bad consolation prize, as he should take the Dion Lewis role in New England’s offense.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Johnson and Williams certainly fit as the best players taken in this round. I’d include Adrian Peterson as well, as I really wanted to select him in the sixth round.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Don’t draft Lamar Miller. The Texans don’t believe in him, so you shouldn’t either. He’s atop my Fantasy Football Busts list.
That said, Miller isn’t as bad as Jacksonville’s defense. Let me put this in caps so you don’t make this error: DON’T TAKE A DEFENSE BEFORE THE FINAL FEW ROUNDS!!!
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: The guys in this draft were sharp. I was hoping for Emmanuel Sanders, Robby Anderson or even Michael Crabtree, but both were snatched off the board before my pick. Kelvin Benjamin is a fine consolation prize if healthy, but I have concerns about his injury history.
I’d rather wait on tight ends, but I was tilted at this point because everyone took the players I liked. There were no running backs or receivers I thought highly of by my eighth pick, so I just went with a solid tight end. BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Anderson, Crabtree and especially Sanders were great picks. I also wonder if Geronimo Allison will outperform his 8.01 selection. That’s the earliest I’ve seen him go, but he’s atop my Fantasy Football Sleepers list.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Nothing sticks out as too bad here, save for Randall Cobb. There’s a decent chance Cobb doesn’t survive final cuts, as the Packers are trying to trade him.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Matthew Stafford is a fine fantasy quarterback to own, given how horrible Detroit’s defense is. Meanwhile, Pierre Garcon’s ADP has fallen in recent weeks, so I think he’s a strong bargain in the 10th round.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: This is the range to take a quarterback. Players at the position who provide value here are Matt Ryan, Philip Rivers and even Carson Wentz, who could produce QB1 numbers when he returns from injury.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: The defense picks stick out as the worst ones. I can’t really find any other selections I hate.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: I wanted another running back, and Jordan Wilkins could start for the Colts in the beginning of the year. He’s worth a shot in the double-digit rounds. So is Chris Godwin, who has been very impressive in the preseason games.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Michael Gallup, whom I wanted to draft, is listed highly in my 2018 Fantasy Football Sleepers page. Dede Westbrook is another sleeper I like.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Ty Montgomery is pretty meh, given that he won’t be the second running back once Aaron Jones returns from suspension. I didn’t hate any other picks.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Phillip Lindsay is a great deep sleeper. He reminds me of Tarik Cohen.
The Chargers were the best defense available, while David Akers was the greatest meme kicker I could find.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: High-upside picks include: Anthony Miller, Courtland Sutton and Chris Warren.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Low-upside picks include: James White, Bilal Powell and Frank Gore.
‘ll be adjusting some of my Fantasy Football Rankings based on these draft results, so check them out. Also, we’ll be doing mock drafts every Wednesday afternoon or evening, so come join us!
My Fantasy Team:
QB – Matthew Stafford, Lions
RB – Melvin Gordon, Chargers
RB – Jay Ajayi, Eagles
WR – Davante Adams, Packers
WR – JuJu Smith-Schuster, Steelers
RB/WR – Will Fuller, WR, Texans
TE – Kyle Rudolph, TE, Vikings
K – David Akers, K, Free Agent
DEF – Chargers Defense
BN – Sony Michel, RB, Patriots
BN – Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Bills
BN – Pierre Garcon, WR, 49ers
BN – Jordan Wilkins, RB, Colts
BN – Chris Godwin, WR, Buccaneers
BN – Phillip Lindsay, RB, Broncos
This is a pretty strong team. I’m not sure about my depth, as the other members of this league took my favorite value players and sleepers, but my starting lineup is stacked at running back and receiver.
My other positions are medium. I like Stafford, but would rather play matchups. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a backup quarterback because I was so tilted that all the players I want were chosen in earlier picks.
