The Cardinals were seven plays away from being 10-7 last year, which is crazy but true. Still, their defense was absolutely dreadful in the second half of the season. Having Walter Nolen healthy will help. Isaac Seumalo’s presence up front should help the blocking for Jeremiyah Love, but it’s still tough to be overly optimistic about this team.

Walt’s Team Needs Assessment

Needs
The Cardinals began the year with a couple of wins, but they lost many close games after that before becomming one of the worst teams in the NFL by the end of the year. Arizona will need to move forward with a new quarterback and lots of changes on defense.
  • Quarterback: The Cardinals seem done with Kyler Murray. Jacoby Brissett is a great backup, but that’s all he is. Arizona needs a new quarterback.
  • Edge Rusher: Josh Sweat was the only Cardinal who was able to produce consistent pressure on the quarterback last year. Another edge rusher must be obtained for Arizona’s awful defense.
  • Two Defensive Linemen: Make it one if Calais Campbell is re-signed for another year. Nose tackle was a big problem for Arizona’s poor run defense in 2025. Signed Roy Lopez and Andrew Billings
  • Linebacker: The Cardinals were weak over the middle of the field last year, so they need a better linebacker to play next to Mack Wilson. Signed Jack Gibbens
  • Offensive Tackle: Jonah Williams is an impending free agent, but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy anyway, so the Cardinals need a new bookend for Paris Johnson.
  • Guard: The Cardinals also have a weakness at guard that must be addressed as well so the next quarterback has a chance.
  • Running Back: Arizona doesn’t have a running game. James Conner is too old, while Trey Benson hasn’t impressed. Signed Tyler Allgeier
  • Safety: Jalen Thompson’s contract is set to expire, so the Cardinals will need to re-sign him if they want to maintain their high level of safety play.
  • Kicker: Chad Ryland hit just 76 percent of his kicks in 2025.

Walt’s 2026 NFL Draft – Overall Team Grade and Selection Grades

Draft Review
Walt’s Draft Grade: C+ Grade
Walt’s Grade Summary
The Cardinals began the draft with a huge blunder. Like the Raiders last year, the Cardinals can’t support a highly priced running back because of issues with their offensive line and passing game. At least two years of Jeremiyah Love’s career could be wasted. You’d think teams would have learned from the Ashton Jeanty disaster, but the Cardinals did not. Don’t blame the general manager though – this was completely owner Michael Bidwell’s call. Meddlesome owners are horrible for NFL teams.

Of course, the Cardinals managed to address their problem areas, drafting Chase Bisontis and Carson Beck on Day 2. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Beck, but the Cardinals made the right decision to see if they could luck into a potential starting quarterback. Bisontis, meanwhile, will upgrade the blocking. Arizona still has a weak front, but it’ll be better because of Bisontis and free agent siginng Isaac Seumalo.

The Cardinals reached with some of their third-day picks, so it wasn’t a great draft overall. However, the caveat is that if the Cardinals are terrible next year and luck into a franchise quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft, that prospect will be set up well with Love and Bisontis, and the rest of the supporting cast. Thus, everything could end up working out even though things may seem bleak right now.

Draft Picks / Prospect Links
Pick 3
D
Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame
Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame
RB Notre Dame
We called this pick, and I made a lot of money from betting this selection, but I hate this decision. The Cardinals have a terrible roster and some OK running backs, so this seems like a waste. Love is undoubtedly an upgrade over the Arizona runners, but there’s nothing around him, so he’ll likely struggle to find any running room behind a pedestrian offensive line and no passing game.
Pick 34
B+
Chase Bisontis, G, Texas A&M
Chase Bisontis, G, Texas A&M
G Texas A&M
The Cardinals wanted to trade down, but they couldn’t find a suitor either. Unlike the 49ers, they didn’t reach. They were able to get a quality offensive lineman who can play both tackle and guard. This could fill a huge need for Arizona, and the pick provides value at No. 34.
Pick 65
B
Carson Beck, QB, Miami
QB Miami
Carson Beck is a big name, so he’ll be talked about a lot here, but he should have been slotted in the third round. I’m not a big fan of Beck, but I understand the Cardinals taking a flier on one of these quarterbacks because they have nothing long term at the position.
Pick 104
B
Kaleb Proctor, DT, Southeastern Louisiana
DT Southeastern Louisiana
Rnk: 89
The Cardinals were thinking about a defensive tackle in Round 2, and Kaleb Proctor makes sense in Round 4. Proctor is a bit undersized, but he’s quick and was very productive in school (albeit against inferior competition.)
Pick 143
C-
Reggie Virgil, WR, Texas Tech
WR Texas Tech
Rnk: 409
Reggie Virgil is a very tall receiver who can make big plays downfield, but he’s extremely thin and needs to bulk up quite a bit. I had him going in the seventh round, so I’m not a fan of this value.
Pick 183
C-
Karson Sharar, LB, Iowa
LB Iowa
Rnk: 0
Karson Sharar was productive at Iowa, but doesn’t really translate to the NFL outside of being a backup or a special teamer. I had him as a UDFA.
Pick 217
B
Jayden Williams, OT, Ole Miss
OT Ole Miss
Rnk: 0
Jayden Williams is raw and makes mistakes, but he’s a powerful tackle with some quickness. The Cardinals are swinging for the fences here, which makes sense in Round 7. Follow @walterfootball for updates. Also, if you haven’t visited the site in a while, you may have noticed the new look. Yes, after nearly two decades, we’ve finally re-designed our site to be more modern. This was not done on a whim, but rather out of necessity because of what occurred during the 2023 NFL Draft. Our site crashed during the entire first day of the draft, which was disastrous for our revenue stream because we make more money during the draft than any other time. The site crashed because a line of code conflicted with the old format of the site, so we had to transition to this new look. Because we lost so much money during the draft, I want to point out that you can really help support the site by paying for the ad-free version of it. It’s $7.99 per month, but you’ll get a super-fast site with no ads. My developer will be adding new features to paid subscribers as well, so look for that in the near future. If you don’t want to pay, please spread the word about the site through word of mouth. That would also be a big help!
