2016 Fantasy Football Stock Report: OTAs, Training Camp

With OTAs underway, there will be updates daily to this 2016 Fantasy Football OTAs, Training Camp Stock page if anything noteworthy happens.

If there’s an injury or a player surprising/disappointing, I’ll let you know about it and adjust my 2016 Fantasy Football Rankings accordingly. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

2016 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of July 25

Aug. 1

Arian Foster, RB, Dolphins
Arian Foster has been taken off the active/PUP list, so he’ll begin practicing. Per the coaching staff, Foster “annihilated” the conditioning test. That won’t mean he’ll still healthy, but Foster should be effective when healthy.

DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Texans
DeAndre Hopkins has ended his holdout. That was quick! There’s no reason to avoid Hopkins in your leagues this summer.

Stevie Johnson, WR, Chargers
Stevie Johnson was carted off the practice field with a knee injury. Johnson couldn’t put any weight on his leg. It’s obviously looking grim, so stay tuned for updates.

Michael Thomas, WR, Saints
Michael Thomas has been the best player at Saints’ camp thus far, according to Rod Walker, The Advocate. Wow, that’s high praise – especially considering that the Saints have Drew Brees and Brandin Cooks. Considering the offense he plays in, Thomas could lead all rookies in receiving.

July 31

Victor Cruz, WR, Giants
Victor Cruz practiced for two consecutive days. This is a positive development for Cruz, who couldn’t get onto the practice field last year. However, players don’t come back from torn patellar tendons, so even if Cruz returns to the field, he definitely won’t be his former self.

Julian Edelman, WR, Patriots
Julian Edelman’s work in training camp indicates that he’s close to returning. That’s great and all, but won’t prevent another injury down the road to a player who tends to get hurt a lot.

Ronnie Hillman, RB, Broncos
Ronnie Hillman admitted to the media that he’s “behind the eight ball” in terms of the running back rotation. Hillman appears to be fighting for the third running back job behind C.J. Anderson and Devontae Booker. While he could make the final roster, you shouldn’t have him on your radar at all.

DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Texans
DeAndre Hopkins is holding out. I won’t move Hopkins down in my rankings yet, but will do so if he takes his time. Hopkins reportedly risks losing a $445,000 bonus if he doesn’t report by Aug. 4, so we’ll see how serious he is soon enough.

July 30

Matt Forte, RB, Bears
Matt Forte is dealing with a hamstring injury. It’s not clear how serious this is, but soft-tissue injuries can linger. We’ll have updates later.

Steve Smith, WR, Ravens
Steve Smith apparently had a “double rupture” in his Achilles, prompting his doctor to say that he hasn’t seen such an injury this bad. He referred to his Achilles looking like “raw, shredded chicken.” Smith hasn’t even had an entire year to recover from his Achilles, so it’s doubtful he’s going to do much early. I wouldn’t touch him in 12-team leagues. He might just be done.

Laquon Treadwell, WR, Vikings
Charles Johnson is playing ahead of Laquon Treadwell right now. While that may change soon, Treadwell is not guaranteed playing time early. Recall DeVante Parker with the Dolphins last year, for example. I wouldn’t even consider Treadwell until the final couple of rounds in 12-team formats.

Kevin White, WR, Bears
Jay Cutler referred to Kevin White as “something special” this week. This isn’t the first time White was praised this offseason. He definitely has a chance to post great numbers this season.

July 29

Kenneth Dixon, RB, Ravens
Kenneth Dixon has a Grade 1 MCL sprain. Dixon will be out for a couple of weeks or so, which will hurt his chances of getting carries early in the season. As a rookie, Dixon needs reps, and he won’t be getting those while he’s hurt.

Josh Doctson, WR, Redskins
Josh Doctson is dealing with a lingering Achilles injury. Doctson declared himself as a fast healer, but his failure to recover from this malady says otherwise. Doctson won’t be a factor early in his career. He should be able to start next year, however.

Jimmy Graham, TE, Seahawks
Jimmy Graham won’t be ready for the start of training camp. Graham, unfortunately, won’t be ready for a lot of things this year. He’s someone to avoid, as players just don’t have success coming off torn patellar tendons.

July 28

Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall, WRs, Jets
I never downgraded Brandon Marshall or Eric Decker for the Ryan Fitzpatrick contract impasse, but I wanted to make a note here that it’s OK to draft them now because Fitzpatrick re-signed with the Jets yesterday.

Ryan Mathews, RB, Eagles
Chet made a great point in the Fantasy Football Notes page: It’s too early to worry about most players on the active/PUP list, but Ryan Mathews is a special case because he has proven to be made out of glass. It remains to be seen how long it’ll take him to get over his ankle injury.

Darren McFadden, RB, Cowboys
Darren McFadden is expected to be ready for Week 1, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! There was concern about McFadden’s elbow injury about a month ago, but it sounds like he’s fine. He’s worth owning if you’re into handcuffs.

Mike Wallace, WR, Ravens
Mike Wallace has failed his conditioning test. Surprise, surprise. Wallace stopped trying at football ever since he left Pittsburgh and ran toward the money in Miami. He made it clear what his priorities were, so it’s no surprise that he has turned into a lazy loser. Wallace is a bum who should be avoided in any league with fewer than 18 teams.

July 27

Anquan Boldin, WR, Lions
The Lions signed Anquan Boldin, which is obviously a big boost to his fantasy stock. Boldin isn’t anything more than receiving depth at this point of his career, but he’s in a good place, as Matthew Stafford will help him be productive.

Josh Gordon, WR, Browns
Here we go again. Josh Gordon’s momentum has taken a hit because he has a quadriceps injury that will cause him to miss a couple of weeks. While this won’t hinder his Week 5 return, it will put him behind in the curve in terms of learning Hue Jackson’s playbook. Also, soft-tissue injuries tend to linger, so Gordon might deal with this for a while.

Marvin Jones, WR, Lions
Marvin Jones’ fantasy stock has taken a slight hit with Anquan Boldin now on the roster. Jones is still one of the starting receivers, but some of his targets will be heading in Anquan Boldin’s direction now.

T.J. Jones, WR, Lions
The player to perhaps see the biggest decline in the wake of Anquan Boldin’s signing with the Lions is T.J. Jones, who is now the fourth receiver. Jones had a ton of momentum going for him, but he’s now undraftable in 12-team leagues.

Jordy Nelson, WR, Packers
Updating the news from yesterday, Jordy Nelson has a “hiccup” in his knee, which is why he was placed on the active/PUP list. It remains to be seen how serious this is exactly. I’m not downgrading him for now, but stay tuned.

July 26

LeGarrette Blount, RB, Patriots
LeGarrette Blount has avoided the active/PUP list. This is surprising, as Blount was rumored to be out of shape earlier in the offseason. Blount appears to be New England’s starting running back, though Dion Lewis will be worked in if healthy.

Jeremy Hill, RB, Bengals
Jeremy Hill is expected to have a “big year,” according to Paul Dehner, Cincinnati Enquirer. According to Dehner, Hill has looked great at OTAs. He seems poised for a rebound season, and he’s a bargain at his 5.05 ADP.

Jordy Nelson, WR, Packers
Jordy Nelson has been placed on the active/PUP list. It won’t be enough to move Nelson in my rankings right now, but it’s definitely something to monitor. It’s been assumed that Nelson would be ready to go by Week 1, but he’s someone who needs to be monitored closely now.

Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers
Mike McCarthy said that Aaron Rodgers is in the best shape of his life. Rodgers is a good bet to have a bounce-back season after he struggled so much (by his standards) in 2015. There’s a good argument for him to be the first quarterback chosen in fantasy. It’s either him or Cam Newton for sure.

July 25

Devontae Booker, RB, Broncos
Devontae Booker flashed as a receiver in OTAs, per Jeff Legwold, ESPN. It sounds like Booker should be able to lock up third-down duties pretty quickly. He’s a legitimate sleeper, especially given C.J. Anderson’s habit of beginning seasons slowly.

Josh Gordon, WR, Browns
Josh Gordon will be reinstated in the NFL after he serves a four-game suspension. Gordon should consider himself lucky, and hopefully he stays out of trouble going forward. Gordon is one of the more talented receivers in the NFL and could post WR1-type numbers beginning in Week 5. Since he’ll miss the first four games, however, he should be drafted as a low-end WR2, high WR3.

Dennis Pitta, TE, Ravens
Dennis Pitta has avoided the active/PUP list. This is quite the surprise, given what Pitta has been through. Though the injuries might have sapped Pitta’s talent, he’ll at least have an opportunity to claim playing time. I wouldn’t recommend him for fantasy, but he’s worth monitoring at least.
