2016 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of Aug. 15
Aug. 22
John Brown, WR, Cardinals
John Brown has resumed practicing. Brown missed three weeks because of a concussion. It’s nice he’s on the practice field, but the concern is whether he’ll miss an extended period of time the next time he sustains a concussion.
Josh Doctson, WR, Redskins
Josh Doctson could begin the year on the PUP list, according to Mike Jones, Washington Post. So much for being a fast healer. Doctson will likely be out for the first six games. He hasn’t been draftable for a while.
Dion Lewis, RB, Patriots
Dion Lewis needs a second surgery on his knee. Lewis seems to be headed for the PUP list, so he’ll return Week 7 at the earliest. This is a blow to New England’s offense, as James White isn’t nearly as talented as Lewis.
Thomas Rawls, RB, Seahawks
Thomas Rawls is now practicing without limitations. That’s obviously good news, but Rawls’ absence has allowed Christine Michael to shine. Michael will take some of Rawls’ touches.
James White, RB, Patriots
James White gets a stock up for Dion Lewis’ knee injury. White is now draftable in the mid-to-late rounds, especially in PPR formats. Just don’t get too excited, as White isn’t a very good player. He’ll be splitting touches with LeGarrette Blount.
Aug. 21
Eli Rogers, WR, Steelers
Eli Rogers has narrowed the gap for the competition for Pittsburgh’s No. 3 receiver, according to Ralph Paulk, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. I would hope so. Rogers has been solid through two preseason games. Sammie Coates, on the other hand, doesn’t seem like he knows how to play football.
Karlos Williams, RB, TBA
Karlos Williams has been released by the Bills. I’d say Jonathan Williams is the preferred handcuff for Buffalo if you really want one, but I’d recommend staying away.
Aug. 20
Davante Adams, WR, Packers
Mike McCarthy praised Davante Adams, telling the media that he had a “very good camp.” Adams had a solid showing in the second preseason game as well. With so many people down on him, Adams could be obtained in the final round of your draft, and it could pay off.
Le’Veon Bell, RB, Steelers
Le’Veon Bell’s suspension has been reduced from four to three games. This makes him more appealing at the beginning of the second round for me (late first in a PPR format). However, I’d still hate to not have my initial selection for three contests.
Aug. 19
Cameron Brate, TE, Buccaneers
Cameron Brate has become one of Jameis Winston’s favorite targets, according to Jenna Laine, ESPN. Brate appears to have supplanted Austin Seferian-Jenkins as Tampa’s No. 1 tight end.
Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs
Jamaal Charles has gotten more work than expected coming off the active/PUP list. That’s a good sign, but Charles remains a relatively high injury risk. I’d rather go with someone more reliable in the second round.
Ladarius Green, TE, Steelers
Ladarius Green could be headed to injured reserve, says Jeremy Fowler, ESPN. Green’s headaches won’t go away, and it’s telling that the Steelers could consider that over the PUP list. Green is not draftable at the moment.
Aug. 18
Malcolm Mitchell, WR, Patriots
Malcolm Mitchell has the lead for the “X” receiving job for the Patriots, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN. Mitchell flashed some potential in the preseason opener before sustaining an injury. However, he’s definitely behind Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Martellus Bennett, Dion Lewis and perhaps even Chris Hogan in the pecking order for targets.
Jordy Nelson, WR, Packers
Jordy Nelson was taken off the active/PUP list. It’s a good sign that he’ll be ready for the season opener, though it’s not a guarantee at this point.
Jimmy Graham, TE, Seahawks
The Seahawks expressed concern about Jimmy Graham’s availability for Week 1. Finally, some realistic thinking. Graham isn’t going to be doing much this year, as almost no one has returned from a torn patellar tendon successfully.
DeAndre Washington, RB, Raiders
DeAndre Washington has taken over the No. 2 running back job, as expected. Washington should push for the starting role at some point this season.
Aug. 17
John Brown, WR, Cardinals
John Brown is still in concussion protocol. It’s been more than two weeks now, and Bruce Arians called it a concern. It definitely is; if Brown takes this long to come back from a concussion, imagine what’ll happen if he sustains another one during the season. I think it’s time to consider staying away from Brown.
David Johnson, RB, Cardinals
Cardinals GM Steve Keim called David Johnson the best receiving back he’s ever seen. Keim cited that many compare Johnson to Marshall Faulk. Keim is one of the top general managers in the NFL, so this is all significant. Johnson probably should be the second running back chosen in fantasy drafts this summer.
Tajae Sharpe, WR, Titans
Tajae Sharpe has enjoyed a solid offseason, and now he doesn’t have to worry about Dorial Green-Beckham taking targets away from him. Sharpe should be a solid real-life wideout for Marcus Mariota this year, but he’s only a late-round flier at best right now.
Aug. 16
Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Panthers
Devin Funchess could outproduce Kelvin Benjamin this offseason, according to David Newton, ESPN. That’s what ESPN Panthers reporter David Newton believes. He cited Benjamin’s concerning conditioning and Funchess’ talent level.
Devin Funchess, WR, Panthers
As written in the other capsule: Devin Funchess could outproduce Kelvin Benjamin this offseason, according to David Newton, ESPN. That’s what ESPN Panthers reporter David Newton believes. He cited Benjamin’s concerning conditioning and Funchess’ talent level.
Thomas Rawls, RB, Seahawks
Thomas Rawls practiced for the first time Monday since breaking his foot. He needs to hurry back because Christine Michael has played and practiced well in his absence.
Aug. 15
Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Panthers
Ron Rivera criticized Kelvin Benjamin’s conditioning. It’s so bad that Rivera is hoping to get Benjamin to 30-35 reps per game by the end of the preseason. That definitely does not make Benjamin sound very appealing.
Devontae Booker, RB, Broncos
Devontae Booker is practicing ahead of Ronnie Hillman this week. Try to pick up Booker late in your draft. He might end up starting this season.
Matt Forte, RB, Jets
Matt Forte still hasn’t practiced because of his hamstring. This can’t be a surprise, as Forte is old, and soft-tissue injuries linger. Forte is being way overdrafted this summer.
