2016 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of Aug. 22

Aug. 29

Kenneth Dixon, RB, Ravens
It’s Sunday at 4:50 p.m., and I just finished a real fantasy draft, which is why there’s no Chargers-Vikings recap yet. It was an 18-round draft, and I needed a super-flier running back in the 16th round. Kenneth Dixon popped into my head. I would’ve listed Dixon here last night after seeing him play very well in the second preseason game, but he sustained a knee injury. I looked it up, and Dixon only had a sprain. The Ravens broadcasters really talked him up, so I took a chance on him late.

Tony Romo Back Injury

Dez Bryant, WR, Cowboys
I’ve written that Dak Prescott’s impressive play means that Dez Bryant won’t take much of a hit if Tony Romo goes down. I still believe that, and I think Bryant could remain a WR1. However, he deserves a slight stock down, as the Cowboys will be more conservative with Prescott at the helm.

Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Cowboys
I’m not giving Ezekiel Elliott a stock up or stock down in the wake of Tony Romo’s injury. The Cowboys will be more conservative with Dak Prescott, which will mean more runs for Elliott. However, Elliott could have slightly fewer scoring opportunities. So, only bump Elliott down if you’re in a touchdown-only league.

Dak Prescott, QB, Cowboys
With Tony Romo out, is Dak Prescott draftable? I think looking at Russell Wilson’s rookie campaign is a good barometer. Not that Prescott will necessarily play as well as Wilson, but it’s a good indicator of how productive a mobile rookie quarterback can be. In Wilson’s first eight games, he threw for more than 240 yards just once. He had just 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and he averaged about 20 rushing yards per contest. Prescott will have a better offensive line and No. 1 receiver, so there’s more immediate potential, but he still doesn’t seem like a great late-round option, though I can definitely understand the upside appeal.

Tony Romo, QB, Cowboys
Tony Romo has a broken bone in his back and is likely to miss at least half the season. It goes without saying that Romo is now undraftable.

Aug. 27

Tyler Eifert, TE, Bengals
Tyler Eifert is targeting Week 4-6 as his return from his ankle injury. Considering Eifert may miss five games – plus his bye, which is Week 9 – he’s being selected too early at his 7.06 ADP.

Aug. 26

John Brown, WR, Cardinals
John Brown returned to practice Thursday. It’s a bit unsettling that he would miss practice because of just headaches and not have it be concussion-related, but he’s apparently healthy again. I still wouldn’t trust him.

Justin Forsett, RB, Ravens
The Ravens’ backfield could evolve into a four-man committee, according to Jamison Hensley, ESPN. This obviously is not good news for Justin Forsett.

A.J. Green, WR, Bengals
A.J. Green told the media that his first child is due in about a month, and that he may miss a game because of it. If Green’s timetable is accurate, he could miss his Week 3 matchup versus Denver. This is a bummer for anyone who drafts Green, but it shouldn’t impact your decision to select him.

Aug. 25

John Brown, WR, Cardinals
John Brown missed practice Tuesday with a headache. Brown missed two-plus weeks of practice with concussion symptoms and was finally cleared. Now, he’s likely to go back into concussion protocol. Given this troubling issue, as well as Carson Palmer’s preseason struggles, I’d stay as far away from Brown as possible.

Kenyan Drake, RB, Dolphins
Kenyan Drake will likely open the regular season on the designated-return IR list, reports Barry Jackson, Miami Herald. Once upon a time, Drake was a top sleeper of mine. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. I like Isaiah Pead as a sleeper now; he’s been Miami’s best running back this preseason, and this injury will pretty much ensure that he’ll make the final roster.

Rob Gronkowski, TE, Patriots
Rob Gronkowski returned to practice Tuesday. As expected, Gronkowski is just fine. I took him in the middle of the second round of a recent fantasy mock draft, where he provided tremendous value.

Aug. 24

Tyler Boyd, WR, Bengals
Tyler Boyd is the “unquestioned leader” for the No. 2 receiver job, according to Geoff Hobson, Bengals.com. Boyd is an intriguing late-round flier. Someone will have to catch passes besides A.J. Green, and Tyler Eifert is hurt right now.

Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs
Jamaal Charles was “full go” in team drills Tuesday. Charles appears to be completely healthy, though it’s unclear how long that will last.

Jared Cook, TE, Packers
Aaron Rodgers has developed a strong rapport with Jared Cook recently, per Wes Hodkiewicz, Packers.com. It wouldn’t be the most surprising thing if Cook turns into a low-end TE1 this season, considering who his quarterback is. He’s one of the many high-upside tight ends available in the final couple of rounds.

Jeremy Hill, RB, Bengals
Jeremy Hill is “going to have a huge year,” says Paul Dehner of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Hill appears focused and in shape now, unlike last year. He seems ready to bounce back.

Breshad Perriman, WR, Ravens
Breshad Perriman hasn’t shown affects of his torn ACL in his return to practice, according to Jamison Hensley, ESPN. Perriman is someone to consider in the final round or two of your draft. There are probably better sleepers, but taking Perriman could pay off if he’s actually healthy.

Aug. 23

Rob Gronkowski, TE, Patriots
Rob Gronkowski hasn’t practiced since pulling up lame a week ago. It’s probably nothing to worry about, but it’s still worth mentioning. I’m not moving Gronkowski down my rankings just yet.

Robert Kelley, RB, Redskins
The Redskins have hinted that Robert Kelley is the team’s new No. 2 running back. Chris Thompson will still be the third-down back, but Kelley will likely start if Matt Jones is out. Considering that Jones is already banged up, this is significant.

Breshad Perriman, WR, Ravens
Breshad Perriman has finally been removed off the PUP list. Now, let’s see how long it takes him to start practicing at full speed. Perriman is not being drafted right now, so taking him in the final round isn’t the worst idea.

Aug. 22

John Brown, WR, Cardinals
John Brown has resumed practicing. Brown missed three weeks because of a concussion. It’s nice he’s on the practice field, but the concern is whether he’ll miss an extended period of time the next time he sustains a concussion.

Josh Doctson, WR, Redskins
Josh Doctson could begin the year on the PUP list, according to Mike Jones, Washington Post. So much for being a fast healer. Doctson will likely be out for the first six games. He hasn’t been draftable for a while.

Dion Lewis, RB, Patriots
Dion Lewis needs a second surgery on his knee. Lewis seems to be headed for the PUP list, so he’ll return Week 7 at the earliest. This is a blow to New England’s offense, as James White isn’t nearly as talented as Lewis.

Thomas Rawls, RB, Seahawks
Thomas Rawls is now practicing without limitations. That’s obviously good news, but Rawls’ absence has allowed Christine Michael to shine. Michael will take some of Rawls’ touches.

James White, RB, Patriots
James White gets a stock up for Dion Lewis’ knee injury. White is now draftable in the mid-to-late rounds, especially in PPR formats. Just don’t get too excited, as White isn’t a very good player. He’ll be splitting touches with LeGarrette Blount.
