2016 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of June 13
June 20
Sammy Watkins, WR, Bills
Sammy Watkins told the media that he’ll be ready by early training camp. Previous reports were more pessimistic, as it has been speculated that Watkins would miss a couple of games. Stay tuned for further updates.
June 19
Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs
Andy Reid said that it’s possible that Jamaal Charles may not be cleared by training camp. I’m not going to mark Charles down yet, but this is at least somewhat troubling. It’s something I’ll definitely be monitoring over the next two months.
Jeff Janis, WR, Packers
Jeff Janis has been having his way with the first-team defensive backs at OTAs, according to Ryan Wood, USA Today. Janis appears to be a great sleeper candidate. He’s a steal at his current ADP (14.05), and he’ll be someone I’ll be targeting late in my drafts.
Ryan Tannehill, QB, Dolphins
Ryan Tannehill has struggled with accuracy at OTAs, per Barry Jackson, Miami Herald. Turns out Peyton Manning may not have helped that much. This is hardly a surprise, as Tannehill has never developed as a quarterback. Adam Gase might still be able to get the most out of Tannehill, but it’s beginning to look bleak.
June 18
Jay Ajayi, RB, Dolphins
Jay Ajayi has had trouble with receiving. This is a big deal, as Adam Gase said that this was an important element for his running backs. Kenyan Drake could overtake Ajayi as a result.
Leonte Carroo, WR, Dolphins
Leonte Carroo has reportedly been impressive this offseason. The Dolphins ranked Carroo as their No. 2 receiver in the 2016 NFL Draft, so they’re going to give him every opportunity to contribute. Carroo isn’t draftable in standard leagues yet, but he’s someone to monitor.
T.J. Yeldon, RB, Jaguars
The Jaguars are expected to start Chris Ivory over T.J. Yeldon, according to Ryan O’Halloran, Jacksonville.com. This would be pretty stupid. Ivory was benched last year and was seldom used late in the season because he was very ineffective after a slow start. The Jaguars sound like they’re going to be compounding mistakes after giving Ivory so much money this spring.
June 17
Tyler Eifert, TE, Bengals
Tyler Eifert is not expected to be ready for Week 1. Eifert could make it back in time, but it appears as though he’ll miss the first couple of games. You can probably use this opportunity to draft him for solid value, though.
C.J. Spiller, RB, Saints
C.J. Spiller is behind Tim Hightower in the Saints’ running back rotation, per Larry Holder, New Orleans Times-Picayune. Don’t bother drafting Spiller. He’s guaranteed to disappoint you.
Michael Thomas, WR, Saints
Fantasy drafters should “consider” Michael Thomas this summer, as suggested by Jim Duncan, New Orleans Times-Picayune. Duncan has seen enough of Thomas to make that statement. Though Thomas is just a rookie, he’ll be playing in a high-powered passing attack, so he stands a decent chance of leading all rookies in receiving.
June 16
Martellus Bennett, TE, Patriots
Martellus Bennett could be a “big factor” in New England’s offense, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. The Patriots apparently want Bennett to be their new Aaron Hernandez – as a football player; not a killer – and Bennett has been working extremely hard this offseason. He’s more than just a backup tight end; he’ll see plenty of action in two-tight end sets.
Melvin Gordon, RB, Chargers
Head coach Mike McCoy said that Melvin Gordon looked healthy in camp. This is nice to hear for anyone who owns Gordon in a keeper league, but I would worry about using a somewhat early draft pick on a running back coming off microfracture surgery.
Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Titans
Dorial Green-Beckham is currently working with the second team, playing behind rookie Tajae Sharpe. It’s possible that Green-Beckham could overtake Sharpe sometime in the next two months, but this is certainly a dubious start.
June 15
Darren McFadden, RB, Cowboys
Darren McFadden is out for two months with a broken elbow. McFadden probably won’t miss meaningful action, but his absence will give Ezekiel Elliott a golden opportunity to officially pass him on the depth chart.
Tajae Sharpe, WR, Titans
Mike Mularkey said that rookie Tajae Sharpe has been the most consistent receiver at OTAs. Sharpe has continued to get first-team reps. He’s someone I’m going to closely monitor in the preseason. He might emerge as a solid late-round flier.
Karlos Williams, RB, Bills
Karlos Williams is sitting out of minicamp because he’s overweight and out of shape. This is a major disappointment. Williams had a golden opportunity to pass the banged-up and troubled LeSean McCoy on the depth chart. Now, I’m less optimistic about Williams. This could all change in the weeks to come, though, so I’m sure I’ll have plenty more updates on the second-year back.
June 14
Devin Funchess, WR, Panthers
Devin Funchess has been the star of Panthers OTAs, according to Joseph Person, Charlotte Observer. Funchess isn’t a bad late-round flier. With Kelvin Benjamin back, opposing defenses won’t be able to pay much attention to Funchess.
T.Y. Hilton, WR, Colts
T.Y. Hilton has been the best player at Colts OTAs, per Zak Keefer, Indianapolis Star. The belief is that Hilton could be in for a career year. He’s definitely someone to target in all leagues.
Sterling Shepard, WR, Giants
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that Sterling Shepard appears to be locked in for a starting job. Shepard might just be the top rookie receiver this season, as he seems to be Eli Manning’s No. 2 weapon.
June 13
Ryan Mathews, RB, Eagles
The Eagles are expected to have a running back by committee, per Dave Zangaro, CSN Philly. That’s obviously not good news for Ryan Mathews, though it could potentially help keep him healthy for the end of the regular season.
Steve Smith, WR, Ravens
Steve Smith told the media he doesn’t know when he’s returning from his torn Achilles, according to Jamison Hensley, ESPN. Many believe Smith will be back soon just because he’s Steve Smith, but the fact of that matter is, he’s a guy in his late 30s returning from a brutal injury he sustained seven months ago. He might not be ready for Week 1.
