2016 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of Aug. 8

Aug. 15

Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Panthers
Ron Rivera criticized Kelvin Benjamin’s conditioning. It’s so bad that Rivera is hoping to get Benjamin to 30-35 reps per game by the end of the preseason. That definitely does not make Benjamin sound very appealing.

Devontae Booker, RB, Broncos
Devontae Booker is practicing ahead of Ronnie Hillman this week. Try to pick up Booker late in your draft. He might end up starting this season.

Matt Forte, RB, Jets
Matt Forte still hasn’t practiced because of his hamstring. This can’t be a surprise, as Forte is old, and soft-tissue injuries linger. Forte is being way overdrafted this summer.

Aug. 14

Bruce Ellington, WR, 49ers
Bruce Ellington has been the “top offensive standout” for the 49ers in joint practices, according to Joe Fann, 49ers.com. If Ellington can translate this to live action, he’ll definitely become a top sleeper. I’ll be keeping a close eye on him in the preseason opener.

Jeff Janis, WR, Packers
Jeff Janis fractured at least one bone in his hand during practice Wednesday, according to Rob Demovsky, ESPN. If so, Janis will be out quite a while. Janis was once one of my top sleepers, but he was considered undraftable even prior to this injury.

Aug. 13

T.J. Jones, WR, Lions
Anquan Boldin is the favorite to be the No. 3 receiver this season, according to Kyle Meinke, MLive. Despite signing him late, the Lions are going to count on Boldin this year. This is obviously bad news for T.J. Jones, who is no longer a sleeper.

Aug. 12

Phillip Dorsett, WR, Colts
Phillip Dorsett has been the most improved player at Colts training camp, according to Stephen Holder, Indianapolis Star. Dorsett is one of the players I have listed in my late-round sleepers page. He’s definitely worth taking toward the end of your draft.

Bruce Ellington, WR, 49ers
Bruce Ellington has been Blaine Gabbert’s go-to receiver in training camp, per Grant Cohn, Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. Gabbert refuses to throw longer than five yards, so I’m sure most of those were short tosses. Still, Ellington seems like a better bet than Torrey Smith.

Ladarius Green, TE, Steelers
Ladarius Green hasn’t been able to practice because he has suffered constant headaches. Uh oh. There have been reports that the Steelers might release Green if this continues. Green is now undraftable in the first 12 rounds (his ADP is 8.06).

Aug. 11

Giovani Bernard, RB, Bengals
Giovani Bernard’s role isn’t expected to change much this season, according to Paul Dehner Jr., Cincinnati Enquirer. Sorry, Bernard believers. Marvin Lewis is devoted to Jeremy Hill, who is expected to handle most of the workload.

Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs
Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said he’s optimistic that Jamaal Charles will play Week 1. Charles hasn’t been practicing at all, and it’s not a guarantee he’ll be ready for the opener. He’s someone to avoid in the early going.

Julian Edelman, WR, Patriots
Julian Edelman returned to practice. The Patriots can breathe a sigh of relief. A temporary one, that is. Edelman might be healthy now, but there’s no telling how long he’ll last on his twice-surgically repaired ankle.

Jimmy Graham, TE, Seahawks
Jimmy Graham has been activated off the active/PUP list. This is a surprise, but it’s still not a reason to draft Graham in the first 12 rounds. He’s rushing back too quickly and will sustain other leg injuries just as Victor Cruz did last year. I’ll give Graham a stock up for now, but it’s not really worth much.

Jeremy Hill, RB, Bengals
Giovani Bernard’s role isn’t expected to change much this season, according to Paul Dehner Jr., Cincinnati Enquirer. Marvin Lewis is devoted to Jeremy Hill, who is expected to handle most of the workload. Hill reportedly has enjoyed a solid offseason, so he’s a bit of a solid value pick this summer.

Marvin Jones, WR, Lions
Marvin Jones has emerged as the No. 1 receiver on the Lions, per Kyle Meinke, MLive. Jones has enjoyed a strong training camp, while Golden Tate has struggled with drops. Jones is playing with a much better quarterback now, so his fantasy potential is much higher.

Aug. 10

Corey Coleman, WR, Browns
Corey Coleman will miss the preseason opener with a hamstring injury. Coleman has a history of soft-tissue injuries, so this is worth noting. Stay tuned for further updates.

Julian Edelman, WR, Patriots
Julian Edelman sustained a foot injury in practice Tuesday, but initial exams deem it not to be serious. Edelman appears to have escaped another injury, but this is a reminder of how fragile he is. The foot he had issue with today is the same one he’s had two surgeries on in the past 10 months. He’s extremely difficult to trust in fantasy, especially at his ridiculously high ADP of 4.05.

Tyler Higbee, TE, Rams
Tyler Higbee has been having a great training camp, according to Greg Bedard, Sports Illustrated. Bedard went on to compare Higbee to Travis Kelce. This might be premature, but Higbee definitely has the raw talent. I wouldn’t draft him as a rookie, but he’s someone worth monitoring for the second half of the year and 2017.

C.J. Prosise, RB, Seahawks
Pete Carroll on C.J. Prosise: “He has missed a ton, there’s no other way to put it.” Prosise was once considered a sleeper, but he hasn’t practiced enough to warrant that distinction anymore.

Laquon Treadwell, WR, Vikings
Laquon Treadwell might be “phased in over time” this year, according to Bo Mitchell, ESPN. Charles Johnson is running ahead of Treadwell right now. That could change as the season progresses, but Treadwell won’t be doing much in the early going.

Aug. 9

Josh Gordon, WR, Browns
Josh Gordon is out of shape. Sigh. You’d think Gordon would work out during his time off, but that apparently is not the case. The good news is that Gordon has time to shed his weight because he’s on a four-game suspension. The bad news is that it’s difficult to believe that Gordon will put forth maximum effort.

Tyler Lockett, WR, Seahawks
It’s “clear” the Seahawks are going to give Tyler Lockett lots of touches this year, according to Sheil Kapadia, ESPN. Lockett has the potential to be a breakout candidate this year. Try to scoop him up if possible.

Jordan Matthews, WR, Eagles
Jordan Matthews will miss 2-4 weeks with a bone bruise in his knee. While it sounds like Matthews could be back for the season opener, there’s always a chance he’ll miss meaningful action.

LeSean McCoy, RB, Bills
I like LeSean McCoy this year, but he’ll be getting a stock down today in the wake of Cordy Glenn’s injury. Glenn could be back for the season opener, but there’s a chance he’ll miss a couple of games.

Sammy Watkins, WR, Bills
Sammy Watkins has been activated off the active/PUP list. This is huge, as Watkins becomes a higher-end WR2 who isn’t as much of a risk as he may have been considered a couple of weeks ago.

Aug. 8

Stefon Diggs, WR, Vikings
Stefon Diggs has been the most impressive offensive player in Vikings training camp, per Matt Vensel, Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Diggs caught 52 passes as a rookie, and he could be ready to take the next step. Unfortunately, his fantasy potential is hamstrung by being in a run-first offense.

Julian Edelman, WR, Patriots
Julian Edelman has been activated off the active/PUP list. Edelman is healthy for now, but he’s too injury-prone to be relied upon. He’ll produce when healthy, but the Patriots will be happy to get 10-plus games out of him.

Jordy Nelson, WR, Packers
Aaron Rodgers hinted that Jordy Nelson could be taken off the active/PUP list as early as next week. That would be great news for Nelson and his owners. Nelson should be a fine mid-WR1.

Thomas Rawls, RB, Seahawks
Thomas Rawls has been activated off the active/PUP list. This is huge, as Rawls becomes a safer lower-end RB1 option. Rawls’ ADP (3.04) makes him a bargain, though I’m sure people will take him earlier now.
