Rank: 17 Previously: 30
The Chiefs have a dreadful roster. They don’t have much of a pass rush, and they lost their entire secondary from a year ago. They don’t have any pass-catchers for Patrick Mahomes, and Mahomes may not even be ready for Week 1.

Walt’s Team Needs Assessment

Needs
The Chiefs had an extremely disappointing season in which they lost some big games and then saw Patrick Mahomes go down with a torn ACL.
  • Defensive End: The Chiefs struggled to generate pressure on the quarterback, which is why their defense was so awful. They need a dominant edge rusher to pair with George Karlaftis.
  • Two Cornerbacks: Jaylen Watson is coming off a great year, but he’s an impending free agent who will need to be replaced if he departs. Trent McDuffie, meanwhile, was traded to the Rams.
  • Defensive Tackle: Kansas City also must find an upgrade at defensive tackle. The team has nothing there outside of Chris Jones, who is getting up there in age. Signed Khyiris Tonga
  • Wide Receiver: Rashee Rice is an excellent slot receiver, but the Chiefs are desperate for talent on the outside.
  • Running Back: Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt are due to hit free agency, but they needed to be upgraded anyway. The Chiefs had no running game last year. Signed Kenneth Walker
  • Two Safeties: Bryan Cook is a terrific safety, but his contract is set to expire. The Chiefs already needed safety help next to Cook, so two safeties will be needed if Cook departs. Signed Alohi Gilman
  • Tight End: Travis Kelce will likely retire from the NFL to enjoy his sham marriage to Taylor Swift for a few years. Even if he remains, he’s been a shell of his former self.
  • Offensive Tackle Depth: Jawaan Taylor sucks, so the Chiefs need to find better depth behind their top two offensive tackles.
  • Backup Quarterback: Gardner Minshew’s contract is set to expire, so the Chiefs will need a new backup unless they want to count on Chris Oladokun again. Traded for Justin Fields

Walt’s 2026 NFL Draft – Overall Team Grade and Selection Grades

Draft Review
Walt’s Draft Grade: C Grade
Walt’s Grade Summary
The Chiefs must have disagreed that they have so many needs because they used two resources, including a valuable third-round pick, to move up from No. 9 to 6 in order to secure Mansoor Delane. This was a vital mistake because the Chiefs couldn’t afford to squander so many resources when there were so many needs to address. Besides, there was a good chance Delane would have been available at the ninth pick. I know for a fact that the Redskins were not drafting him. The Saints may have, but the Chiefs could have just obtained another talented prospect like Caleb Downs, Jordyn Tyson (available if the Saints pick Delane), Francis Mauigoa, or Rueben Bain.

Kansas City rebounded with its remaining two picks that it had prior to Day 3, securing Peter Woods and R Mason Thomas to bolster the weak front seven. The Chiefs should’ve had another second-day choice, but they lost it in the ridiculous trade for Delane.

The Chiefs made some strong value picks on Day 3, namely Emmett Johnson and Garrett Nussmeier. Overall, however, this was an underwhelming draft class because the Chiefs weren’t able to address many of their needs because they surrendered too much in an unnecessary trade.

Draft Picks / Prospect Links
Pick 6
MILLEN
Mansoor Delane, CB, LSU
Mansoor Delane, CB, LSU
CB LSU
The Chiefs traded up three spots for a player they easily could have taken at No. 9. Wow. Mansoor Delane is considered the top cornerback in this class, but only because Jermod McCoy isn’t healthy. McCoy is a better corner, making this a very strange pick. It’s not like the Chiefs didn’t have any other needs.
Pick 29
B
Peter Woods, DT, Clemson
Peter Woods, DT, Clemson
DT Clemson
I didn’t like that the Chiefs traded up for Mansoor Delane, but I like this pick much more. Peter Woods is a talented, disruptive interior defensive lineman who easily could have gone in the 18-22 range. In fact, he would have made more sense at the 18th pick than Caleb Banks. The Chiefs are getting great value with Woods, who will be the successor for Chris Jones. We’ll have to see if Woods finally lives up to his potential, but there’s a ton of upside with this pick.
Pick 40
B+
R. Mason Thomas, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
R. Mason Thomas, DE/OLB, Oklahoma
DE/OLB Oklahoma
I’d say the Chiefs needed an edge rusher, but that would be unnecessary because they need almost everything. They struggled to get to the quarterback last year, so an edge rusher in the top two rounds makes sense. R Mason Thomas is a speedy edge rusher with good potential, so this is a solid pick.
Pick 109
B-
Jadon Canady, CB, Oregon
CB Oregon
Rnk: 0
Another cornerback for the Chiefs makes sense because they lost their entire secondary this offseason. However, there were better options. Jadon Canady is great in coverage, but is frail and struggles to tackle. I had him in the fifth.
Pick 161
A
Emmett Johnson, RB, Nebraska
RB Nebraska
Rnk: 351
Emmett Johnson is a very agile running back with great vision. Pass protection is a concern, however. The Chiefs needed depth behind Kenneth Walker because Walker isn’t known as someone who can handle a full workload. I had Johnson in the third round, so I love this value.
Pick 176
B
Cyrus Allen, WR, Cincinnati
WR Cincinnati
Rnk: 0
Cyrus Allen is a terrific route runner with quality hands who can make plays after the catch. There are some durability concerns, however. Given how poor the Chiefs’ receiver group is, there’s a chance that Allen plays plenty of snaps sooner rather than later.
Pick 249
A+
Garrett Nussmeier, QB, LSU
Garrett Nussmeier, QB, LSU
QB LSU
Garrett Nussmeier has great arm talent, but really struggled last year. He was wincing in pain after almost every throw. It turns out that he has a dire injury issue, but there’s a chance he can overcome it, and if he does, the Chiefs might be able to develop him and eventually trade him to a team that needs a starter.
