2013 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of Aug. 12

AUG. 18

Arian Foster, RB, Texans
The Houston Chronicle’s John McClain wrote that he’s concerned about Arian Foster’s Week 1 availability because FOster’s back pain has spread to his legs. The Texans have no idea when he’ll be returning to the field. It might be in your best interest to avoid Foster in your fantasy draft. Let someone else spend their first-round pick on him.

AUG. 17

E.J. Manuel, QB, Bills
E.J. Manuel will miss the rest of the preseason (and possibly Week 1) because of a minor knee procedure. Manuel should retain the starting job upon returning though, so don’t downgrade him too much. Kevin Kolb is not going to impress.

Doug Martin, RB, Buccaneers
Doug Martin was knocked out of the second preseason game with a blow to the head. There was some concern about this, but Martin reportedly has passed all of his concussion tests. Greg Schiano told the media that Martin is “going to be fine.”

AUG. 16

Michael Bush, RB, Bears
Matt Forte has been handling the goal-line work this preseason. Michael Bush won’t be any sort of fantasy factor unless Forte gets hurt.

Matt Forte, RB, Bears
Forum member Knuckles pointed out something I saw last night, but didn’t mention because I was distracted with a lot going on: “I’m surprised that you weren’t jumping on the fact that the bears gave Forte the ball on the 3-yard line. Am I making a big deal out of nothing?” Forte has handled all three goal-line carries this year, rendering Michael Bush obsolete. This is definitely significant, as it raises Forte’s value.

AUG. 15

Eddie Lacy, RB, Packers
Eddie Lacy has thrived in pass-protection drills, according to his running backs’ coach, Alex Van Pelt. This is huge, as it’ll mean Lacy will be on the field more often. With Johnathan Franklin struggling, Lacy has really separated himself from the other Green Bay backs. He should be a solid RB2 this year.

AUG. 14

Tom Brady, QB, Patriots
Twitter nearly broke Wednesday afternoon when Tom Brady left practice with a knee injury. However, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that the injury isn’t very serious. The MRI was negative, so Brady is listed day to day. This is great news. Stay tuned for more news.

Johnathan Franklin, RB, Packers
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel mentioned today that Johnathan Franklin has struggled in terms of running and has only been an average pass-blocker. Franklin didn’t look very good in his preseason debut either. It’s time to move him down my rankings.

Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jaguars
According to the Florida Times Union, Maurice Jones-Drew has missed just one day of practice through three weeks, and that one day was a predetermined rest day. Jones-Drew is set to have a bounce-back campaign.

Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders
The Raiders just lost left tackle Jared Veldheer for the year (or at least most of it) because of torn triceps. It’s a huge blow for the Raiders’ entire offense, as Veldheer was the team’s top pass-protector and run-blocker. Darren McFadden will obviously be affected by Veldheer’s absence.

Kenbrell Thompkins, WR, Patriots
Kenbrell Thompkins is still taking first-team reps at training camp. Thompkins had a terrific preseason debut and can now be safely projected as the favorite to start at one of the receiver positions. I moved him to the No. 1 spot in my 2013 Fantasy Football Sleepers page.

AUG. 13

Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs
Great news for the Chiefs – two doctors have determined that Jamaal Charles just has a mild foot strain, and that he’s day to day. It’s safe to select him with your first-round fantasy pick.

Randall Cobb, WR, Packers
Mike McCarthy said that Randall Cobb will be playing through a biceps issue “for a while” this season. Cobb will play, but he won’t be 100-percent effective. How this will impact his season is unknown, but I’ll bump him down a bit in my rankings.

Malcom Floyd, WR, Chargers
Malcom Floyd sprained his knee, so he’ll be out for about a month. It could be worse, as the Chargers are sending Floyd to Dr. James Andrews to see if he tore his knee.

AUG. 12

Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs
Jamaal Charles was carted off the field during Monday’s practice. There was tons of panic on Twitter, but X-rays were negative. However, Adam Schefter said that “privately” there are some in the Chiefs’ organization who are “concerned” about this situation. Charles is set to have an MRI soon. Stay tuned for updates.

Dallas Clark, TE, Ravens
Dallas Clark gets an up arrow only because he wasn’t on a team before Sunday. Clark is now the best tight end on Baltimore’s roster, which is saying a lot because he can’t move anymore. Don’t draft Clark in your league.

Ed Dickson, TE, Ravens
Ed Dickson didn’t have much fantasy value to begin with, but he’ll undoubtedly catch fewer passes than originally projected with Dallas Clark now on the roster.
