2013 Fantasy Football Stock Report – Week of July 22

JULY 27

Arian Foster, RB, Texans
I wrote about Arian Foster yesterday, but I must note that the Houston Chronicle reported Saturday that there isn’t a timeline for Houston’s star back to be removed from the PUP list. Furthermore, Foster is still dealing with soreness in his calf. It’s still possible for him to have a dominant fantasy season, but it’s more than likely that he’ll disappoint. Let someone else draft him in the top five.

Jeremy Maclin, WR, Eagles
Jeremy Maclin is out for the year with a torn ACL. It’s a tough break for Maclin, who is entering his contract season. Riley Cooper and Jason Avant will see more targets as a result, but neither is worth drafting.

Dennis Pitta, TE, Ravens
Dennis Pitta fractured his hip Saturday and will miss the entire season. This does raise the value of the other tight end, but Ed Dickson is not talented enough to be anything more than a TE2, so don’t waste your time with him.

JULY 26

Vincent Brown, WR, Chargers
The San Diego Union Tribune wrote that Vincent Brown shined during the first day of training camp. I liked Brown as a sleeper last year until he suffered a season-ending injury in the exhibition games. He’s very talented and could easily emerge as Philip Rivers’ preferred receiver.

Arian Foster, RB, Texans
Arian Foster didn’t receive clearance to practice at the start of training camp because of a lingering calf injury. With Ben Tate coming off a great offseason, Foster is shaping up to have a disappointing 2013 campaign.

Percy Harvin, WR, Seahawks
A second-consecutive stock down for Percy Harvin. Jason La Canfora tweeted the following Thursday evening: “Percy Harvin yet to finalize 2nd opinion on hip, with that process ongoing. If surgery required as 1st Dr. recommended likely season ending.”

Trent Richardson, RB, Browns
Despite reports that Trent Richardson wouldn’t be fully active during the early stages of training camp, the second-year back displayed great speed and agility during the first day of practice, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Russell Wilson, QB, Seahawks
Jason La Canfora tweeted that Percy Harvin could be out for the season if a second opinion on his hip labrum tear says that it requires surgery. That’s why I’m dropping Russell Wilson for the second time this week.

JULY 25

Jay Cutler, QB, Bears
Jay Cutler isn’t a starting-caliber fantasy quarterback, but he’s one of the better QB2s. Both Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery reported to training camp in great shape, so Cutler should have a great season.

Percy Harvin, WR, Seahawks
Did the Seahawks purchase damaged goods when they traded for Percy Harvin? Pete Carroll said Thursday that Harvin may need to undergo surgery to repair his torn hip labrum. Harvin obviously must be downgraded in the wake of this news.

Brandon Marshall, WR, Bears
Brandon Marshall reported to training camp in terrific shape. He weighs 235 pounds, but has just 6.2-percent body fat. He’s been working hard with Alshon Jeffery all spring and summer down in Florida. This is a great sign for Chicago’s entire offense.

Zach Miller, TE, Seahawks
Zach Miller was placed on the active PUP list with a foot injury. He tore his plantar fascia in the second round of the playoffs back in January. He shouldn’t have been on your fantasy radar anyway.

Russell Wilson, QB, Seahawks
I loved Russell Wilson going into this season, but he received some bad news Thursday when Pete Carroll told the media that Percy Harvin may need surgery to repair a torn hip labrum.

JULY 24

Eli Manning, QB, Giants
Hakeem Nicks didn’t look healthy in training camp, according to the New York Daily News. Eli Manning attributed his late-season struggles to Nicks’ maladies, so this obviously doesn’t bode well for his fantasy outlook.

Hakeem Nicks, WR, Giants
The New York Daily News reported that Hakeem Nicks didn’t look like he was at full speed at training camp. It seems like he’s still getting over his leg injuries. This is definitely an issue because Nicks always seems to be banged up. Nicks should be avoided in the early rounds of your fantasy draft.

JULY 23

Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jaguars
Maurice Jones-Drew has been cleared for training camp. This is big news, as Jones-Drew is over the Lisfranc injury that sidelined him for 10 games last year. He’s going later than he should in fantasy mock drafts (ADP 2.07), so he’s a tremendous value as a high-end RB2.

Heath Miller, TE, Steelers
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has reported that Steeler coaches have no idea when Heath Miller will be able to play. It’s likely that Miller is going to begin the season on the PUP list. He should be avoided regardless.

Jonathan Stewart, RB, Panthers
ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas wrote that it’s looking like Jonathan Stewart won’t practice before the “middle or end” of training camp. Surprise, surprise. Stewart is always banged up, so it should not be shocking that he’s once again nursing an injury. He’s one of my 2013 Fantasy Football Busts.

JULY 22

Brian Hartline, WR, Dolphins
Ryan Tannehill showed a much greater rapport with Brian Hartline during the first day of training camp than he did with Mike Wallace. Tannehill actually failed to connect with Wallace on multiple occasions. Their bond will obviously grow stronger, but this is a reminder that Hartline is a decent, late-round fantasy option. Defenses will focus on Wallace, giving Hartline much more favorable matchups.

Alshon Jeffery, WR, Bears
The knock on Alshon Jeffery in the past his been his effort, but he’s doing his best to quiet the critics. Jeffery has spent most of the offseason with Brandon Marshall, as the two trained together in Florida at the Fit Speed Athletic Performance facility. Jeffery is one of my favorite late-round fantasy sleepers.

Jordan Reed, TE, Redskins
Fred Davis is coming off an Achilles tear, so Jordan Reed is expected by some to assume the snaps. Well, not so fast. Reed has his own injury issues. He’s dealing with knee and quad problems right now, so don’t count on much from him in the early going.

Shane Vereen, RB, Patriots
Rob Gronkowski will eventually return to the lineup, but Aaron Hernandez is gone for good. Someone will have to take his targets. Fantasy owners believe that someone will be Aaron Dobson or Jake Ballard, but it’s likely to be Shane Vereen. The Patriots have been lining up Vereen at wideout during OTAs and clearly have big plans for him. He could be used sort of like Randall Cobb in Green Bay. If Vereen is available in the late fifth or sixth round of your fantasy draft, make sure you grab him.
