This is a 2018 Fantasy Football Mock Draft I took part in with 11 friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter (@walterfootball. As usual, I’ll have analysis of my picks, as well as the best and worst selections every two rounds.
Just a heads up that we have 2018 Fantasy Football Mock Drafts every Wednesday afternoon or evening. Check out the forum or follow me on Twitter to find out when the next mock draft will be.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I had three players rated evenly when I was on the clock with the seventh pick: Antonio Brown, Melvin Gordon and Leonard Fournette. I went with Brown because I’ll always go wide receiver over running back when all things are even otherwise. Receivers have a lower bust rate than running backs, and it seems as though the receiving depth is once again lacking this year. That’s why I like Blash’s strategy of passing on the running backs in the first four rounds.
I did, however, opt for a running back in Round 2. I was set to take Michael Thomas, but Jacob Camenker snatched him instead. I like Joe Mixon this year; he’s in great shape, and Cincinnati’s offensive line has improved.
By the wake, Jacob, as you may know, used to write NFL game recaps for us. He has gotten a job writing for Sporting News, which is awesome. I’d like to congratulate Jacob, and I have no doubt that he’ll have tons of success with Sporting News.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I obviously have to list Thomas here because I wanted him at 2.06. I was also going to consider Dalvin Cook over Joe Mixon, but LT plucked him off the board.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 1-2: I think LeSean McCoy carries too much risk to be chosen in the second round. He could be suspended, which would really hurt AMiller’s team.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: I wanted receivers, but all of the second-tier guys were gone by the time I was on the clock in the third round. I once selected Kenyan Drake with my third pick. Drake finished on a strong note last year, though I will admit I’m concerned about Drake being able to handle a major workload for a whole season, given that he’s never done it (not even in college.)
With my fourth pick, I’m upset I didn’t get Tyreek Hill or JuJu Smith-Schuster. There weren’t many third-tier receivers I liked remaining, and they were all gone when Hill and Smith-Schuster were taken.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Derrius Guice was the running back I wanted at 3.07, so I loved that pick. Smith-Schuster and Hill, of course, need to be listed as well.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 3-4: Don’t draft Lamar Miller. The Texans don’t believe in him, so you shouldn’t either. He’s atop my Fantasy Football Busts list.
I don’t like the Doug Baldwin pick either in the wake of the news that he’ll miss all or most of the preseason. That report just came out, however, so My Ballzach Ertz probably didn’t hear about it. I’d avoid Baldwin until at least Round 5.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: I seriously considered Will Fuller at 4.06. Fuller is in great shape, while Deshaun Watson has worked very hard this offseason. Both should have amazing 2018 campaigns.
I’d rather wait on quarterbacks until Round 8 or later, but Russell Wilson was way too good to pass on at 6.06.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: I mentioned Blash’s decision to pass on running backs earlier. His strategy paid off, as he landed a couple of solid ones at the Round 5-6 turn. Jacob’s pick of Mark Ingram seems great as well. Ingram will be suspended for the first few weeks, but he’ll give Jacob borderline RB1 production when he returns.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 5-6: Demaryius Thomas is a rapidly declining player, so I wouldn’t take him in the fifth round. Drew Brees is also old, but his fantasy-related problem is that he’s not throwing as much anymore because the Saints’ defense and running games have greatly improved.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: I had a tough time deciding between Pierre Garcon and Robert Woods in the seventh round. I had Garcon rated a bit higher, and I like the 49ers more than the Rams this year.
Woods was available for me at 8.06, so I easily could’ve chosen him. I wanted another running back, however, and Jamaal Williams is the favorite to handle the workload in Green Bay even though I think Aaron Jones is more talented.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Dion Lewis would’ve been under consideration for me in the seventh round, as he could have more touches than Derrick Henry. I also have to mention Woods, as well as Robby Anderson, whom I need to move up in my rankings with there being no talk of any sort of suspension.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 7-8: Julian Edelman in the eighth round of a non-PPR league seems odd in the wake of his four-game suspension. I’m also down on Devin Funchess, as it seems as though D.J. Moore has passed him as the team’s No. 1 receiver.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Speaking of D.J. Moore, he is the top player in my Fantasy Football Sleepers list. Moore has been outstanding this offseason, and he appears to be Carolina’s new No. 1 receiver.
Jordan Reed is my starting tight end. I would’ve preferred George Kittle, but the two are pretty close, so I wasn’t too upset when Jacob took him.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: I mentioned Jacob’s pick of Kittle. There were several other picks I loved in these two rounds, beginning with Jamison Crowder at 9.02. Alex Smith and Crowder have developed a great rapport in training camp, so that bodes well for Crowder if he can stay healthy. Meanwhile, Nick Chubb and Corey Clement are two running backs who could be starting for their respective teams by the middle of the season.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 9-10: Don’t take a defense in the first 10 rounds. Just don’t. On a great defense like Jacksonville or Minnesota, there are seven great players who are responsible for it being so dominant. It only takes two of seven players to go down for a stop unit to decline. Great fantasy defenses are very easy to find, and even if you don’t have good luck doing that, just play matchups.
Even worse is the kicker pick, but ChedderHeads timed out, so that wasn’t decision.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Mike Williams is another young receiver I really like. Williams was the seventh-overall pick in 2017, but he was hurt all last year. With Hunter Henry done for the year, Williams’ stock is pointing way up.
Derek Carr is my backup. Both Carr and Russell Wilson have Week 7 byes. I will admit that I was not paying attention to the bye weeks in this mock, but I don’t think it’s a big mistake to select two signal-callers on the same bye week unless your league charges per transaction.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: Kenny Golladay seems like he could break out this year, so I love the value with him in the 11th round. Doug Martin and Peyton Barber, meanwhile, could be starting for their respective teams, as could Devontae Booker. And finally, Cameron Meredith is an outstanding selection as well. If Williams weren’t available, I would’ve taken Meredith at 11.07.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 11-12: You want players with major upside in Rounds 11 onward. Frank Gore and Duke Johnson provide almost no upside.
MY PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Jordan Wilkins is a fine sleeper. He could emerge as Indianapolis’ starting running back, and the Colts have a better offensive line this year.
I went with the Ravens’ defense because Baltimore battles Buffalo in Week 1. As for my kicker, I chose David Marvin. I have no idea who he is, but he’s a great meme pick.
BEST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: High-upside picks include: Paul Richardson, Michael Gallup, Matt Breida, Rishard Matthews, Dede Westbrook and Anthony Miller.
WORST PICKS, ROUNDS 13-15: Low-upside picks include: Marqise Lee, Tyler Lockett and Giovani Bernard.
‘ll be adjusting some of my Fantasy Football Rankings based on these draft results, so check them out. Also, we’ll be doing mock drafts every Wednesday afternoon or evening, so come join us!
My Fantasy Team:
QB – Russell Wilson, Seahawks
RB – Joe Mixon, Bengals
RB – Kenyan Drake, Dolphins
WR – Antonio Brown, Steelers
WR – Will Fuller, Texans
RB/WR – Jay Ajayi, RB, Eagles
TE – Jordan Reed, Redskins
K – David Marvin, Falcons
DEF – Ravens Defense
BN – Pierre Garcon, WR, 49ers
BN – Jamaal Williams, RB, Packers
BN – D.J. Moore, WR, Panthers
BN – Mike Williams, WR, Chargers
BN – Derek Carr, QB, Raiders
BN – Jordan Wilkins, RB, Colts
I went receiver-heavy in my first mock draft. This team is more well-rounded. I don’t think my team is weak anywhere, though I’ll admit that I’m not in love with Drake or Ajayi. I also wish I had a better third receiver, though I like my two young players at the position.
